My Resting Place (Mayn Rue Plats, in Yiddish) is based on a Yiddish song written in the late 1800’s by Yiddish poet Morris Rosenfeld, a Polish-born Jew that settled in New York in 1886. He wrote about the terrible living conditions of emigrants from Eastern Europe in New York’s tailoring sweatshops. During the period of Jewish migration between 1880 and the onset of restrictive immigration quotas in 1924,2 million Jews left Europe for the United States. Despite a perilous trip by ship across the Atlantic Ocean, America was seen as Die Goldene Medina, the “Golden Land,” where all dreams would and could come into fruition. Tragically, most settled into the Lower East Side of Manhattan, which at the time was the most densely populated place in the world. Migrants worked long hard days in poor conditions lacking in running water and plumbing, with the hope of a better life:

Don’t look for me where myrtles grow!You will not find me there, my love;Where lives wither at machines,That is my resting place.

Don’t look for me where the birds sing!You will not find me there, my love;I am a slave, where chains clang;That is my resting place.

Don’t look for me where fountains splash!You will not find me there, my love;Where tears flow and teeth gnash,That is my resting place.

And if you truly love me,Then come to me, my dear love;And lighten the gloom on my heart,And sweeten my resting place, my grave.

This haunting melody, introduced by the solo clarinet, transforms until finally reaching a climax, only to be quietly restated at the conclusion by the solo clarinet al niente.
