Take Your Art to a New Level!ArtGymSD is a welcoming environment for artists who want to keep their artistic muscles (skills) in shape by working on a regular basis in the company of other adult artists.

ArtGymSD takes place 6 times a week amidst the finest juried art in the prestigious SDAI: San Diego Museum of the Living Artist in Balboa Park. Our hours are Monday - Thursday 6-9pm, Saturday mornings from 7-10am, and Sunday mornings 9am to 12 noon. We provide easels, tables, music, and refreshments.

Build your work habits. Make art a routine in your life. First session is free. After that its $5 a session or $35 a month.

Life drawing on Mondays during ArtGymSD:

Brook Castrejn Solis has set up a wonderful life drawing program Monday evenings at SDAIs Museum of the Living Artist. Every week a talented life drawing model will be available from 6 to 9pm Monday evenings. Models will be doing their own special nude and/or costumed poses. The program kicks off this Monday July 25th with Bri-ana Leigh, vintage siren extraordinaire. Her sultry looks belie a surprisingly efferves-cent personality that is sure to bubble over into your drawings. Youll want to have all your favorite pencils sharpened and ready for this one. Come and be delighted!

Departure from the Villa at 5 pm. Drop off North County passengers at the La Costa Ride Share and then back at the San Diego Art Institute by 8 pm.

MY PATHTHE JOURNEY OF A BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHER

Solo Show SDAI:MOLA July 20, 2012 to August 26, 2012

I consider black-and-white photography as a personal art expression.

I see color through shape and form, through light and shadows.

It is his simplicity of style and uncontrived technique that make the work of Jack Salb so striking. The eye of his camera is his canvas: framing each photo exactly as he sees it.

A native of New York City with an extensive career in advertising at major agencies and corporations, Jack Salb was strongly influenced by the environment of the creative industry in which he worked. . . as well as the citys vistas of stark grey and black. He studied early on, with Joseph Breitenbach one of the original fraternity of LIFE Magazine photographers.

Moving to California in 1986, and finding a new landscape in the west, Jack Salb pursued his work in photography. Intrigued by the desert southwest, one of his first portfolios featured the high road be-tween Santa Fe and Taos.

Cities particularly hold a fascination for him. Paris, New York, Barcelona and Prague have been among his urban landscapes. Further afield, the exotic textures of Morocco and Mexico and the Greek Isles have inspired some of his most dramatic work.

There are no hidden agendas or contrivances in Jack Salbs work. His subjects are presented with clarity and great integrity. And it is his approach to presenting these simple realities that marks his photographic style.

Jack is a member of the San Diego Art Institute and his works have been consistently selected to be exhibited in the on-going juried shows as well as the Southern California Regional shows. This is Jacks second Solo Show; the first was featured here at SDAI in July 2006.

Jacks photograph The Acropolis: Lindos was one of the 87 art-works selected from the 1,000 submissions representing artists from eleven countries for the 2006 SDAI International Digital Exhibition sponsored by SONY. Additionally, the work was one of eleven prize-winners from among the group of judged entries.

Jacks work has been exhibited in a number of galleries. A number of photographs have been purchased by ILLUMINA for their perma-nent art collection and his work is also held by many private collec-tors here in San Diego as well as New York, San Francisco, Utah, Colorado and Paris.

3Anyone who has been in the gallery in the last few weeks would have noticed quite a bit of activity. This is the result of a grant from the De-partment of Energy and part of a stimulus package to create jobs and to support green efforts and programs to reduce energy usage. We presented a request to retrofit the gallery and replace all existing light-ing with the new LEDs that were developed to move toward a green ap-proach in all areas of our operations. We worked closely with our elec-trical contractor Travis Nixon from Absolutely Electric to address the issues we have had in our atrium area.

The Museum of the Living Artist has been in the Balboa Park space for 15 years and it was time to upgrade our lighting and our exhibition space. The technology that developed the LED lights allowed for 5 times the life of regular incandescent and halogen lights while reducing the amount of energy by 75%.

However, until recently, the color spectrum was not acceptable for light-ing artwork as the LED light did not render the true color spectrum we require. As fate would have it, within the last two months, we were able to find a vendor with a LED light that both fulfilled the requirements we needed and at the same time was acceptable within the parameters of this grant.

We developed a moving lighting fixture that solves numerous issues in the atrium. We are now able to use LED color-changing units to flood color to greatly enhance the look of the space as well as having a system for lighting exhibitions directly in this area. This fixture also has 8 ports for digital projectors so we will now be able to accept and present digital projects and increase our offering to the artist community.

So, all in all, we get a facelift and increase of usable life of the lights we now use, which results in fewer products per timeframe to purchase, reducing redundant labor, eliminating the heat and allowing for a more comfortable environment when we have long and large functions. We also reduce energy consumption by 75% and have a wide range of con-trols over the lights.

However, even with this win/win for us, we are in need of support from our constituency if we are to continue to maintain our growth and ad-dress the needs of our community.

Upcoming in September, we will take a bus trip to the Getty Villa in Mali-bu. If you have not been on our bus trips, you will be pleasantly surprised at the level of fun, the quality of the trip and the opportunity for fellow-ship.

5A great many thanks to Evolution Fast Food for cater-ing our last Poetry & Art event on June 21. The food was delicious, and over a hundred guests feasted on good eats, art, poetry, and music. Gustavo Zamar-ripas installation was cutting edge. Jim Ruland and Judy Reeves captivated the audience with their sto-ries. Ben Chung played guitar and sang to keep the night flowing. And Brian Dick and Christen Sperry-Garcia brought their Museum Mascot Project to the folks roaming Balboa Park, encouraging many of them to come down and join us. Read about us here: SD CityBeat. Special thanks to recent USCD gradu-ate, Rosa Quezada, for helping with every aspect of the show.

Our next event will include students and staff from San Diego State Universitys Poetry International, headed by Ilya Kaminsky. PI published its 17th edi-tion this year, and received a Pushcart Prize for Fred Moramarcos Elegy for Kenneth Koch. Ben Chung will be back to play music, and there will be plenty of wine and snacks to go around. There will also be a special guest not to be missed. Stay tuned for more details. The Gathering is a social, relaxed group where artists, aficionados, their spouses or significant others meet over potluck to discuss their latest work and adventures. Children are welcome but the work is not censored, so parental discretion is strongly advised.

The next Gathering dates will be:

Sunday, July 1 & August 5Description and schedule: 3:30 to 4:00: bring artwork and check in. 4:00: doors are locked (ring the doorbell after 4). 4:30-5:30: artists break off into groups of 9 artists to

present their work. (If enough under-age artists bring work, they will be given a separate group and leader.) Non-presenters can continue socializing or join the group of their choice.

5:30 to 6:00: groups finish up, reconvene, socialize and/or help tidy up.

Artists can bring up to 3 pieces of artwork. All skill levels show work for fun, feedback, mentoring and exposure. In the UU tradition there will be a question of the day (hereafter known as the Molly), which artists can answer or ignore when showing their work.

Artists are encouraged to bring show flyers, books, magazines, announcements, etc., to share. People who bring Art and Food (or just food) get in free. Everyone else is $5 per individual, couple or family.

New members: this is a great opportunity to meet other members, show your work and see the work being created in the San Diego area.

Everyone else: show us your work, whether youre getting into the juried shows or not. We want to see what you are doing and have the opportunity to talk with you.

The Paint-out is an SDAI-sponsored program to support and promote the art of plein-air paint-ing (painting outside on location). Participating artists gather at designated San Diego locations to paint in plein air and socialize. An informal critique of a days paintings is performed with intent to pro-vide a learning and supportive environment. SDAI members and non-members, of all skill levels, are welcome to participate.

Each year there will be a juried exhibition at the Museum of the Living Artist. The show, as part of a regional show, will feature paintings selected from the Paint-out programs Paint-out events. Paintings must have a paint-out coordinators initials on the back to be eligible for the exhibition. The maximum size un-framed painting is 11 x 14. A painting must be framed and wired for hanging.

EVENTSPaint-out events in 2012 occur February through August on the first Saturday of the month. In September the paint-out is on the second Satur-day. Participants can arrive and paint anytime after sunrise. Canvases will be initialed at the noon meeting and critiqued.
