Greetings All,

“Sold Out.” Yes, that is right. SDCDHS just concluded the

3rd sold out seminar this season. I am pleased that you are

enjoying the exceptional course topics and keynote speakers.

You have voiced your wants and desires, and your dedicated

Executive Board have taken notice and made their magic

come alive.

As the 2012-2013 season draws near an end, it is time to

elect a new group of Executive Board members who will con-

tinue to carry on the mission, vision, and goals of SDCDHS.

Fortunately, some of the existing board would like to continue

in their roles, and ask for your support during our April elec-

tion. We are however, seeking other members to participate

in charting the future of SDCDHS. Make your voice heard and

help to continue the success of your component, by throwing

your name in the ring. No experience is necessary, just a ded-

icated heart to grow and develop SDCDHS. A folder with spe-

cific duties and responsibilities for each position is available,

and a mentor is available to guide you throughout your term in

office. It will be the most rewarding, empowering experience

as a Registered Dental Hygienist you will experience.

In our body, the heart pumps blood and the lungs pump

oxygen. In their own mind, their job is the most important part

of existence. They will never agree on which job is most im-

portant. The fact is, they are both right. We need both for the

body to live. The same is true when compiling a dedicated

team to run an SDCDHS. WE WANT AND NEED YOU! So

please consider lending your time and support to this fine

component.

See you at our next meeting on Saturday, March 30, 2013.

Best Regards,

Dental Hygiene: Then & Now

Page 2

Bulletin!

A Brief Summary By Susan Clark

Dr. Alfred Fones, a dentist and pioneer in the world dental hygiene movement,

established the first dental hygiene program in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1913. By

November 1914, the first class graduated 27 of the 34 women that initially enrolled.

Most of these women began their careers in public schools. In 1915, the first dental

hygienist was employed in a New Haven Hospital. To be sure that the new dental

hygienist did not do expanded functions they were not officially trained to do, the

Connecticut Dental Practice Act was the first regulation of dental hygienists by

dentists (and so it began, our continual struggle for autonomy). On July 1, 1917,

Irene Newman, Dr. Fones’ cousin, became the first dental hygienist in the United

States. She also became the first leader of the Dental Hygiene Association (thank

you Irene). In 1919, Minnesota instituted a two-year Dental Hygiene program.

In 1924, Hawaii was one of the first states with licensed Dental Hygienists and by

1926, thirty states had licensed dental hygienists. The American Dental Hygienists'

Association was organized in September 1923, with 46 members present, and incor-

porated in 1927. A monthly publication called “The Journal of the ADHA” began. The

Seal of Incorporation was designed and adopted by the ADHA in 1928.

Did you know the average pay for a dental hygienist in 1944 was $25 a week?

(We’ve sure come a long way BABY!)

Did you know? Jack Orio became the first male graduate when he graduated from

University of New Mexico in 1965.

Did you know? In 1998 the California Legislature created the Registered Dental

Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP). This was created so dental hygienists can

provide oral care and preventive services to special populations in alternative set-

tings.

These are the words to the original Oath for Dental Hygienists:

“I humbly acknowledge my human limitations in accepting this parchment of my

Alma Mater, solemnly swear to render health service to those who seek my

ministrations, hereby enjoining upon myself the sacred duty of teaching the public,

particularly children and young people by precept, lecture, and every other available

mode of instruction, the value of dental health as a priceless possession; and further,

bind myself by future study to broaden my knowledge that I may share with others

such information in my special field as will tend toward the ideal of dental health

sought by Dr. Alfred C. Fones, the founder of the profession of Dental Hygiene.”

We had a sold-out crowd at the Admiral Baker Club,

for the January 19, 2013 Dental Practice Act and

Infection Control CE. Many of our members took

advantage of getting fingerprinted for their license

renewal. They also enjoyed our speaker Nancy

Andrews, RDH, who's pictured with SDCDHS President,

Susan Clark, RDH, OM, and to visiting our 8 Corporate

Reps.

We'd like to thank all our Corporate Reps, especially,

Dux Dental and Total Care for sponsoring our speaker

Nancy Andrews, RDH, and Crown Seating for donating

a Virtu Chair for our Opportunity Drawing that Jeri

Badour, RDH BS, (pictured) won. Present were the

following Corporate Reps, that helped make this CE

great by their presence and by their donations to the

Opportunity Drawing: Total Care-Matthew Mitchell; Dux

Dental-Jenelle Hughlett; GC America-Debbie Iacona;

Humana-Greg McMullen; Zila-Tracy Mulvaney, RDH

The Handlery Hotel was the setting for SDCDHS'

General Dinner Meeting on February 26, 2013. The

honored guests of the evening were the Senior Dental

Hygiene students from South Western College and

Concorde Career College; along with CDHA President-

Elect, Nadine Lavell, RDH, MS. Joan Tortoles, Concorde

Sr. DH Class President and Kayley Krage, SWC Senior

DH Class President, brought their class greeting and

thanks. Each student was presented with SDCDHS

President, Susan Clark's book "Exploring Dental

Hygiene, Finding the Hidden Rewards". The SWC DH

students, earlier that day at South Western College, had

a lunch and greet with CDHA President-Elect, Nadine

Lavell, RDH, MS, which was sponsored by SDCDHS.

The evenings' program featured a panel of six

hygienists: Susan Clark, RDH, OM; Nadine Lavell, RDH,

MS; Vickie Kimbrough-Walls, RDH, MBA, PHD; Nancy

Starr, MPH, RDH; Sandra Shapiro, RDH, BS; Rose Hall,

BS, RDHAP; and Joan Vrielink-Capito, BS, RDH. They

spoke about their alternate dental career choices outside

clinical practice, and prompted the students and mem-

bers to "think outside of the box" when it comes to a

fulfilling Dental Hygiene career.

If the meeting wasn't full of enough excitement, the

membership elected 11 delegates and 2 alternate

delegates to represent SDCDHS at the 2013 CDHA

House of Delegates, in Long Beach, on May 31-June 2.

Brad Cushman, Ways & Means Chair lead a lively op-

portunity drawing with items donated by our Corporate

Reps, and Heidi Coggan, Cal-Hy-Pac Liaison, explained

the important work that Cal-H-Pac does in representing

the Dental Hygiene profession in the legislature. All the

attendees had the opportunity to speak to and to go

home with samples from the Corporate Reps represent-

ing: Humana, Hu-Friedy, Orascoptic, CEA, Auerbach &

Gussin and Orapharma.

to Sigma Phi Alpha by the newly founded San Diego Chapter, Delta Delta Phi. She

was presented this award by Darcie Bell, RDH BS, Delta Delta Phi President, at their

first meeting and CE course held at Southwestern College. Jeri was chosen for her

outstanding contribution to the dental hygiene profession for all her years of leadership

in SDCDHS. Sigma Phi Alpha is a National Dental Hygiene Honor Society and their

purpose is to promote, recognize, and honor scholarship, leadership, and service

among dental hygiene students and graduates of dental hygiene programs. One Hon-

orary Member can be elected each year, so congratulations to Jeri for being Delta

Has It Been A Year? No—It’s Been 75 Years of Leadership!

During our next program meeting, Tuesday evening, April 23rd, while excitedly celebrating our 75th

Anniversary, we will choose the leaders for our 76th Year. I will have the honor of presenting an official slate of

officers for election, after which nominations will be taken from the floor. If you or another member you know, is

interested in helping direct SDCDHS activities for our 2013-14 program year, please get their approval and then

place their name in nomination together with another member’s “second” to your motion. Then we’ll call for the

vote! (Just make sure they’re a paid-up member.) Contact me with any questions or suggestions,

[email protected]

Becoming a leader in your professional organization is not difficult for Dental Hygienists. Just by going through

the educational and licensing process required to be an RDH, you’ve perfected your skills at goal setting,

organization, perseverance, performance and determination. By practicing your profession, you are fully-

developed in the caring and selfless giving departments. Since kindergarten you’ve learned to play well with

others! This what it takes.

If you prefer to get started by helping with our committees that do so much of the ‘hands on” work of SDCDHS,

please let President Susan Clark know of your interest. We are all needed.

Don’t forget to come on April 23rd for the celebration and the voting. See you there.

Southern Regional Conferences were held on March 2nd at the Four Points Sheraton, Los Angeles. Among

the attendees, San Diego attendees included our own Heidi Coggan, Gail Gilman, Darcie Bell and Jackie

Buchanan. In addition to our board members, attendees included the Director of SWC - Vickie Kimbrough-Walls,

and the Director of SD Concorde University Carinne Hawley.

Students that attended were able to sell their fundraiser items at the Student Market and network with over 300

other student attendees. Speakers at the conference spoke to the students about options upon graduation and

offered a varied array of options open to them post graduation. The venue included a continental breakfast,

corporate sponsors with free little gifts as well as opportunity drawings. Overall the meeting was a huge success
