Best advice – get there early and stake out your territory! The food was delicious – and reflected the many ethnic origins of our members. We brought sausage rolls, if I remember correctly, and true to form, didn’t get to eat any of them! But we enjoyed some awesome appetizers and desserts brought in by everyone else, not to mention the entrées provided by the society. The plant exchange was fun too. The more attractive the plant, the quicker it gets chosen by someone else, allowing you to pick early in the drawing. It’s fun to participate and fun to watch. Best Of The BestBy David Graham

Have an Orchid to bring to the monthly meeting?Looking for a new challenge?Have a new and interesting, perhaps unusual orchid?Like to compete?Think that you have the best orchid?Like to vote and choose the best Orchid?

Then this is for you!

Coming in January to a meeting near you..... A specialtable will be set up where individuals will be allowed toplace ONE orchid. Each orchid will be identified as usual, except that in place of your name, you will be given anumber. Please see me (David Graham) to assign you anumber for your plant. Each member in attendance willbe allowed to vote on what orchid they think is the bestone on the table that night.

So, you ask, how do I vote. Easy. Remember the little ticketsyou get for wearing your name tag or badge? It nowbecomes your ballot for voting. Once the general meetingis over, write the number of the orchid that is your favoriteand that you think is the best. A coffee can (or othercontainer) will be placed on the table to collect the tickets.Voting will end once the plant raffle begins. I will thentally the tickets and announce the winning plant and thename of the lucky winner. Hopefully it will not take verylong.

So you are wondering what the lucky winner will receive.Your choice of one of the plants on the plant table.

But remember, only one entry per person. Married, yousay? OK. No problem. Still two people, so bring in onefor each of you.

Sound interesting? I hope so. Lets try it for a few monthsand see how it works. If it is a success, then we will continueto do it at the regular meetings.

Let me know what you think of the idea.

November/DecemberOrchid ChecklistPrepared by Ned Nash and James Rose. From orchidweb.org

Cattleya Growers of just about every level of expertise will havebegun to notice autumn conditions by now. Days are becomingshorter, hence cooler; the sunlight has less intensity as a resultof the sun’s lowering angle, nights are longer and generally cooler.Plants are responding by slowing and ripening their growth inpreparation for winter. The first cultural change noticed shouldbe a reduced frequency of watering, as the plants dry out moreslowly. This is a function of both the reduced day length andlower temperatures, as well as the plants’ slowing growth rate.Reduced water needs signal a reduced need for fertilization. Notethat the key word is reduced, not eliminated. Feed less frequentlyand at lower dosage, but feed. Growths, made during summer’sheat, and relatively soft and green, will be ripening - hardening- in preparation for a brief period of rest (in many cases).

Many of these ripening growths will have a sheath, presagingthe coming winter or spring flowering season. In some cases, these sheaths will have been evident since as early as July. (Earlysheath development does not mean early flowering on plantswith winter-spring seasons.) You may notice that some of thesesheaths are showing signs of yellowing. This is not abnormal.Autumn’s more pronounced temperature fluctuation can leadto water condensation inside the sheath, hastening the normalprocess of senescence, so yellowing sheaths can be left on theplant only so long before they must be carefully removed topreserve the bud primordia within. Water condensation leftunchecked can rot the bud primordia. The sheaths can be safelyremoved by slitting open and peeling down toward thepseudobulb.

Cool-Growing Orchids One can almost hear a sigh of relieffrom all of the cool-growers, from Masdevallias toOdontoglossums. As day temperatures decline, one can see anoticeable improvement in these plants. Shorter days and lowerlight levels do not seem to bother them. Repot before winterarrives.

Cymbidium Finally we begin in earnest the main Cymbidiumseason. Cymbidium ensifolium can give some early and fragranthybrids, but it is now that the bulk of the crop will be flowering. The season lasts for about seven months, adding color to anycollection. Miniature varieties will peak for the next three tofour months. There are three important things to do: stakeinflorescences ramrod straight for best presentation, watch forslugs and snails (especially just after a rain), and fertilize with amild balanced formula regularly.

Oncidium crispum Complex This is the season for plants inOncidium section crispum from Brazil to shine. Extremely

vigorous hybrids come in wide varieties of markings dominatedwith chestnut and brown and butter yellow. Give plants highlight to produce strong upright inflorescences. The pseudobulbsshould be plump, so do not let the plants dry out while they arein bloom. Later, plants will enter a dormant period.

Paphiopedilum The flowering season for the “toads” or“bulldog” Paphs is just getting underway. These cannot be growneverywhere, but where cooler summer nights allow their growth, there is no longer-lasting or more exotic display than these.Paphiopedilums are, in general, not heavy feeders, and it isespecially important with this type to reduce nitrogen levelsnow for best flowering and spike length. Be watchful for wateraccumulating in the growth around the sheath, or for the late-season warm spell, either of which can lead to the sheath’s rotting. As the spikes emerge, do not change the orientation of the planttoward the light, as this can lead to a crooked or twisted spike.

While Paphiopedilums rarely like to dry out entirely, water needsare significantly reduced beginning now. Over watering at thistime of year can quickly lead to root rot or erwinia problems. Now is the time to practice good sanitary practices in yourgreenhouse or growing areas, as pest and disease problems havea way of multiplying rapidly in the darker and more crowdedconditions that generally mark the winter growing area. WithPaphiopedilums, especially, “cleanliness is next to godliness” andif the growing area is littered with old foliage, weeds and dyingflowers, keeping the plants alive and flowering will be next toimpossible.

Phalaenopsis Shortening days and cooler nights are the signalsfor inflorescence initiation in Phalaenopsis. In more northernclimates, or on the west coast, growers have already begun tosee the early inflorescences that may be ready for Christmas. Inthe eastern areas, nights in the greenhouse will now be in thelow to mid 60s, depending on the thermostat setting, so thefirst of our Phalaenopsis will not begin to bloom until Valentine’sDay at the earliest.

A reduction in nitrogen levels will go a long way to giving thebest possible spiking, as will a boost in potassium andphosphorus. In other words, a “bloom booster”-type fertilizeris definitely indicated in the next few months. Disease and pestproblems are best dealt with now, especially as mealy bugs hidein the bracts and flower buds. Once they have establishedthemselves, they are difficult to eradicate, and flower damageor crippling results. Potential disease problems can be dealt withby the application of a copper-based compound to control/alleviate rot problems before they start. There is nothing morefrustrating than to have shepherded your plants through agrowing season, only to have them decline before your eyes.

Vandaceous Genera Whereas the general decline in temperaturesis beneficial to cool-growing orchids, it is not for Vandaceousplants. The only cold-hardy member is Neofinetia falcata. Orientyour plants in such a way as to take advantage of as much lightas possible. This can be a problem in northern latitudes. Reducewatering and feeding schedules.

At 6:30 PM the potluck of hors d’oeuvres starts up.Contrary to what was announced at the last GeneralMeeting, this does not mean an entree, this means fingerfoods. Everyone with a last name starting with A throughM is asked to bring his or her favorite finger food. Don’tforget this is not a full-blown meal affair, just a good snack. In the past there always seems to be those who walk bywith plates brimming, and in some cases heaping platesare covered with napkins heading for the parking lot! Sohave your normal meal before coming and be fair toeveryone else by leaving something for others to enjoy. You can fancy this up as much as you like, some membersbring their own place settings, complete with linens andcandles! The society will provide paper plates, plasticutensils, and paper napkins. Sometimes having sufficientserving utensils can be a challenge. Please bring thenecessary serving utensil for those hors d’oeuvres that aremore than finger food.

After the hors d’oeuvres we move right into the best part, deserts. Everyone with a last name starting with N throughZ is asked to bring his or her favorite desert. All of thecomments made above apply here as well, take some andleave some for the fellow members. The society will alsoprovide the utensils, plates and napkins.

At 7:30 entertainment will be provided by the Sun HarborChorus, a men’s choral group who perform the barbershopharmony style of music. Perhaps you have noticed themacross the patio from our meeting room, upstairs, theymeet every Tuesday night. They will provide us a part oftheir Christmas Show program that will have started onDecember 1 and 2, at 2:30 PM each day at the Casa delPrado Theater in Balboa Park. Their program continuesthroughout the holidays at several civic and religiouslocations. The local Sun Harbor Chorus is comprised ofabout 70 members and is part of the larger organizationthat stretches into sixteen districts in the United Statesand Canada, with more than 33,000 members.

At 8 PM for those who wish to participate there will be aPlant Exchange. This is how it works; bring a plant withyour name on the plant. Since this is an Orchid Societyyou will probably want to bring an orchid. As each plantis selected, the name of the person on the plant selectedwill have the choice of the next plant to be drawn. Needlessto say, the higher the quality, the better looking the plant, the better the chance of having an early draw. The choiceis yours regarding the quality of the plant you bring.

After the Plant Exchange we will have the plant give away.Every member gets a free plant just for showing up and

having a good time. Upon entry, every dues paying memberwill receive a ticket stub for the plant give away, the otherhalf will go into the ticket drawing drum. It’s pretty simple, all you have to do is wait for your ticket to be called, andthen pick up the plant of your choice off the table. Really,a gift without any obligation!

Our plants will be provided from 5 different vendors whoadvertise in our newsletter.

Dave Reid of Dave Reid’s Orchids will provide a selectionof his award winning Cattleyas and a variety ofmiscellaneous orchids. Of course, this is just an exampleof the quality of plants he has in stock. He’s located just ashort drive past Escondido. At first opportunity you needto see for yourself what else he has available.

Linda Blessing of Oceanside Orchids has Phals and Paphsfor our give away. The plants are taken directly from herinventory. She specializes in providing colorful, sturdystock. Oceanside Orchids is just a short drive up I-5.

Wally and Lynn Johnson of Cal Pacific Plant Farms havemostly Oncidiums and Dendrobiums available. You seetheir place every time you go up I-5 around the Leucadiaarea.

Cliff and Marilyn Lanoue of Elusive Orchids plan onproviding Paphs, Masdevallias and other miscellaneousvarieties. Their diligence and pampering of their plantsis more than apparent when you see the plants they haveavailable. They are located in the East County area ofSan Diego.

Ralph Smith of Leucadia Orchids is bringing a variety oforchids, most of which he developed himself over theyears. He has several white Paphs and Paphs from yellowcrosses. He will also have white Cattleyas with coloredlips, plus some Oncidiums and a few species. Ralph hasbeen a long time consistently outstanding local grower.

That makes for a pretty wonderful start off for the HolidaySeason. Have a Happy Holiday Season and the very bestto you and in the coming New Year!
