PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Dave Johnson

Greetings Club, this September brought back memories of last year with the excessive heat and

humidly that made you not want to drive your Model A Ford. Of course ‘International Model A Ford

Day’ always comes in September and I think we all were dreading driving in 95 degree heat. But it

wasn’t that bad this year. My thoughts were of cars overheating. But not so! Paul and Patty Win-

chester put together another beautiful International Model A Ford Day tour through the city ending up

in Balboa Park Automotive Museum where the cool breeze was very comfortable in the shade of the

Eucalyptus trees and the lunch was plentiful and delicious! We did have a Hard Luck Trophy event though….Ron

and Joyce Engen had a big problem, it was reported they lost the pin that couples the brake pedal to the brake linkage

thus the lack of any brakes except emergency brakes. I saw Ron and Joyce on the flat part of the tour around West

Lewis and Goldfinch; thank God they weren’t on a hill! Our club cars seem to be maintained in good condition, but

lesson learned, it might be a good idea to check all brake linkage and be sure cotter pins are in place! After the tour

and lunch, seven of us traveled to Qualcomm Stadium to display our cars with the T Bird Club at the SDSU football

game with University of South Alabama. Now that was a pretty uncomfortable experience with the heat and humid-

ity, but several of us stayed for the Aztec game and fun was had by all. Be sure to check out the reports from Bud

and Paul and see who was at September’s events. Betsy and I really enjoy being with all you members on all of our

events. We all have such a good time together, but I’m looking forward to cooler tours and parades! Last month Rob

& Robin Roland’s name was drawn for the members’ $40.00 drawing pot. The Roland’s weren’t there and they

missed out, so the next membership drawing is now for $50.00. Be sure to be at the October 9th meeting with your

BUSINESS MEETING HELD THE 2ND FRIDAY San Carlos Recreation Center

OF EACH MONTH AT 7:00 PM 6445 Lake Badin Ave.

San Diego, Ca. (619) 527-3443

The San Diego Model A Ford Club was first founded in 1957 by a few dedicated Model A owners. Our pur-

pose is to help preserve the Model A, which was in production by the Ford Motor Company from 1928-1931.

Ownership of a Model A is not a requirement for membership in the club. Membership dues are $30.00 per

calendar year. Membership in one of the National Clubs is mandatory (either MARC or MAFCA) and the re-

sponsibility of each member. Contact information to join a National Club is listed below:

GENERAL MEETING OF

SAN DIEGO MODEL A FORD CLUB INC.

September 11, 2015

CALL TO ORDER- The meeting was called to order at 7: 00 PM by Director Dave Johnson.

Dave welcomed all to the 9-11 meeting, a Memorial Day never to be forgotten followed by the

Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

DIRECTOR'S REPORT- Selena Forman requesting banquet meeting for September 17 or 18 or October 1st or 2nd.

Nayola Bieber has volunteered her home for the meeting. It was moved and seconded that the minutes be approved

as read in the Quail Call. Motion passed.

TREASURER'S REPORT- Roxy had to change bank accounts to our new club name. She reported the account

balance. There were outstanding bills to be paid. A motion was made and seconded to pay the bills.

REFRESHMENTS-Joan Dainer thanked all those who brought refreshments.

WAYS AND MEANS-50/50, cleaner, green enamel paint, gas tank filler screen and filter, parts box, handy zippered

tool bag. Door prize Mountain Berry Pie. Dave Johnson won the 50/50.

PARADES- Dave Johnson for Bud tonight. San Diego State Game right after Model A Day on September 19th. Oc-

tober Boo Parade starts at 10:00 on the 24th. Meet at Old Coco's location. November 8 Street Parade, Antique Air-

plane Event at Gillespie Field, Auto Showcase on October 11th.

TOURS- Paul Winchester reported on International Model A Day on Saturday September 19th. Meet on Fenton

Parkway at 10:00. Won't go East if it is hot. Will be behind Auto Museum in Balboa Park. Catered sandwiches

available. Please let Patty know if you will need lunch. Club voted to spend $400 to cover cost. San Diego State

event following. Saturday October 3rd tour to Grand Traditions by Stan and Judy Boyer. Lunch will follow at res-

taurant. Meet at IHOP 9:00 on Kearny Villa Road.

CLUB APPAREL- Betsy will be available at break if you wish to purchase items.

QUAIL CALL- Newsletters on table.

FASHIONS- Nayola said to plan for MAFCA Convention in Loveland, Colorado next year. It's a lot of fun to go as

a group. She will help anyone who wants to enter in Era Fashion Show. Nayola has clothing from a former member

for sale at good prices. She has shoes, a compass, dresses, purses, bracelets, gloves, bow ties, etc.

MEMBERSHIP-Judy Jo, standing in for Ed and Peggy reported 48 members and two visitors, Janet and Richard

Books.

Dan Seeman thanked those who took their cars to Mt. Helix.

TECHNICAL- Arlyn Bieber shared the Mystery Part a 30-31 tail light switch. The winner was Walter Faust. The

article in the Quail Call talked about fasteners. Henry Ford used a lot of cotter pins which are very labor intensive.

Today we can use split pins. Don't use them on brakes. Nylocks are also very useful as well as split lock washers.

Brake shoes are important.Get them adjusted properly. Backs will wear out before the fronts. New cast iron drums

are good. Board of Directors for MAFCA: Please vote only for the ones you want. Read about those running and

vote.

DRAWING- Rob & Robin Roland were not present, so another ten will be added to the pot.

DEFENDER- Ray Beardslee had no report.

JOKE- Ric Bonnoront entertained us with the one-eyed redhead joke.

HARD LUCK TROPHY was awarded to Vic and Joyce Patterson for having their tailpipe

blow off before arriving at Lantern Crest for the car display. Thanks Reen for making their

drive home a lot quieter.

ADJOURNMENT- The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 PM.

Respectfully submitted by Joan Minnick for Secretary Judy Boyer

TECHNICAL TALK: Arlyn Bieber

EMERGENCY BRAKE CHANGES

In August 1930 Ford added 4 lugs ½”high to the outer flange of the emergency brake

carrier plate assembly A-2600 and A-2601. See following picture.

These lugs provide additional sup-

port for the emergency brake band

and lessen any possibility of the

band shifting to one side. I have

heard about a situation where the

emergency band slipped on the old

carrier and locked the brake drum

in place, not a pretty picture!

By August 1930 about 4 million

Model As had been produced with

the old style carrier. This means

only about 1 million Model As

were produced with the new style,

so finding the later style with lugs

can be difficult. If you find one at

a swap meet, it might be a good

idea to purchase it and the next

time work is done on the rear

brakes, change to the later style.

This might save you a AAA tow

and also keep you from receiving

the “hard luck trophy”.

I’ll be at the Hershey Swap meet

during the October meeting look-

ing for Model A treasures so see

you all at the November meeting if

not before.

UNCLE SAM

Ever wonder how the United States got the nickname Uncle Sam? It is

linked to Samuel Wilson, a New York meat packer who supplied barrels of

beef to the Army during the war of 1812, Wilson stamped the barrels with

"U.S." for the United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as

"Uncle Sam's".

Just thought you would like to know...Bill Corson

ERA FASHIONS 1928-1931: Nayola Bieber

Can you guess what year these patterns for Paris designed evening dresses

appeared in the Pictorial Review magazine? Hints: Each dress has a waistline emphasized by a

sash or is belted. Note the shape and size of the purse. Notice how long the ladies hair is.

The first pattern shows a triple-tiered skirt with horizontal

lines as well as a graceful bertha type collar/sleeve made in

a polka-dotted net material lending feminine charm. Paris

says ruffles and tiny sleeves are smart – and extremely flatter-

ing as well -- featured in the second pattern!

1928 1929 1930 1931

1928 1929 1930 1931

The third pattern has an Empress Eugenie neckline and be-ruffled

skirt assuring radiant charm! The Grecian gown is a smart choice

for important occasions, especially since it has a dipping peplum

at the sides, a tied sash, and a flattering V-shaped encrustation in

the bodice of the dress.

now full. (Embassy Suites and Hampton Inn have rooms available at a higher price).

Many have expressed interest in attending this National meet, give it some thought and start planning now. Hotels

are filling up. Let’s get a list of those interested in attending from the San Diego club, would you drive your A,

trailer your A behind a modern or fly in. In 2004 we had a large group of San Diego members attend the Portland,

Oregon Meet, let’s do it again. You won’t be sorry, it’s a great experience.

FREE TO GOOD HOME: Paul Hastie has inventoried the donated Model A Magazines. There are approxi-

mately 80 of them. They will be on the kitchen counter at the next meeting. Take as many as you need to complete

your collection. They are free. If you would like a copy of the inventory list prior to the meeting, email Paul at

I have everything that I wanted as a

teenager, only 60 years later.

I don’t have to go to school or work.

I get an allowance every month.

I have my own pad.

I don’t have a curfew.

I have a driver’s license and my own car.

The people I hang around with are not

scared of getting pregnant and they do

not use drugs.

And I don’t have acne.

FRIENDS from our Roving Reporter Bill Corson

It has been said absence makes the heart grow fonder. Conversely out of sight-out of mind is appropriate in

some instances. It is with much appreciation on my part that even though many miles separate us, I occa-

sionally receive e-mail messages and phone calls from my model A friends inquiring as to my well-being.

We all know individuals we consider friends but, I can honestly state those associated with the San Diego

Model A Ford Club rank among the most genuine. When a fellow club member is in need of moral, emotional

support, or technical assistance, they step forward without hesitation.

With all the times set aside for special recognition throughout the year such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day,

even Groundhog Day. Why not FRIENDSHIP DAY? Of course, that would require an act of congress or

Presidential proclamation and obviously I have no clout with politicians. They all seem to know me when

they want my vote but, otherwise I do not exist. However, I would still like to make the proposal for

FRIENDSHIP DAY.

With that in mind I extend the following poem I picked up somewhere in my travels.

Some friends are messy, some are quite neat. Some friends have fungus, and corns on their feet.

Some friends are nice, while others will swear. Some friends have dandruff, and bugs in their hair.

Some friends are pure, yet others have sinned, Some friends smell bad ,cause they break lots of wind.

Some friends are skinny, still others have guts. Some friends spend too much time just scratching their butts.

Some friends are many things, these are just a few. But most of all,

I’m really glad my friends are you.

(if that doesn’t get the tear ducts flowing I don’t know what will) Bill Corson

I used to hear Mother's day is exactly 9 months after Father's day. Not sure I get it!

INTERPRETATION

While visiting with an Amish friend a fellow stopped bye in response to an advertisement that

was posted in the newspaper regarding farm equipment and livestock for sale. The guy said he

was interested in a horse but wanted the one that was in it's right mind. Looking confused,

Moses inquired as to what the potential purchaser was talking about. Pulling the paper

out of his pocket he pointed at the ad and said " look here, It

reads TWO HORSES FOR SALE, ONE BUGGY".

Guess it is all a matter of interpretation..... Bill C.

I don’t know about your, but I think it’s time for Bill to return to Southern California.

HARDLUCK TROPHY

Vic & Joyce Patterson were the lucky winners of the

Hard luck trophy this past month. It seems that they

had a small but very noisy problem with their ex-

haust pipe on the way to the Lantern Crest Car Dis-

play. They sure made a GRAND entrance. Need-

less to say we heard them coming looooong, before

we saw them. After lunch and the engine had a

chance to cool down, Reen Kotas made his way over

to the car with his tool box, he and Vic had it back

together in no time. That sure made the ride home

much quieter! Congratulations?
