San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes

Sunday, October 7, 2012 With a Win…

The 49ers improved to 4-1 for the 2nd season in a row, marking the first time since 2001-02 that San Francisco has started 4-1 in consecutive seasons.

The 49ers improved to 11-1 at home since 12/1/10. San Francisco’s current .917 winning pct. at home is the 3rd best in the NFL during that span. [GB – 13-1 (.929); Bal – 13-1 (.929)]

Head coach Jim Harbaugh improved to 5-1 against AFC opponents and 2-0 against the AFC East.

San Francisco improved its overall record against Buffalo to 6-5. The 49ers remained undefeated in the month of October under Harbaugh, going 5-0 overall and

3-0 at home. San Francisco improved to 7-0 at home following a road game under Harbaugh.

Record Setting Offensive Performance:

The 49ers became the first  team in NFL history to post 300-or-more yds. rushing (311) and passing (310) in the same game.

Yards Add Up in the First Half:

The 49ers registered 320 net yds. (83 rushing, 237 passing) of offense in the first half, the most by the team since 9/27/98 vs. Atl. (394 net yds. – 128 rushing, 266 passing).

The 49ers 237 net passing yds. in the first half were the most by the club since 9/27/98 vs. Atl. (266 net passing yds. in the first half).

A First in 51 Years: With QB Alex Smith (303 yds. passing), RB Frank Gore (106 yds. rushing), WR Michael

Crabtree (113 yds. rec.) and TE Vernon Davis (106 yds. rec.), it marked the first time the 49ers had a 300-yd. passer, 100-yd. rusher and 2, 100-yd. receivers in the same game since 11/19/61 vs. Chi. [QB John Brodie – 322 yds. passing; RB C.R. Roberts – 107 yds. rushing; WR Aaron Thomas – 131 yds. rec.; WR R.C. Owens – 107 yds. rec.].

Head Coach Jim Harbaugh Press Conference – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

You’ve got to be pretty pleased with that performance? “Very pleased. Very pleased with our guys. Good football. Good team victory. And a lot of plays made. Felt really good for the receivers. Thought they did an outstanding job. Quarterback was near perfect. And again, a lot of people involved. A lot of people making plays. [WR] Michael Crabtree, [TE] Vernon Davis. [RB] Frank Gore, just continues to be the great player that he is. Thought our offensive line did a tremendous job, against a really formidable front there. Defensively, outstanding as well. Great team defense, great team victory.” Did you guys give T Anthony Davis any help DE Mario Williams? “Nothing in particular. No, he just did a fine job. I thought both the tackles really played well. We had some penalties, but overall just made enough plays to overcome that.” Did you see a lot on film from the Bills game last week against the Patriots where you can see where you can exploit them? “Well, a little different, the way the Patriots attacked and played.” Were they giving you the deep pass? “Well, I thought we executed it extremely well, and receivers were just really getting open and doing a fine job, really running strong. There were some fabulous catches made and some really good routes. And they were just getting it and going. And [QB] Alex [Smith] was really on the money all day. That was an outstanding job by him. Really, good throw after good throw. And the protection was excellent. It was a little windy out there, but he was just putting it in, pin-pointing it. He had a fabulous day.” What’s the matter with him right now, going into the X-ray room? “He’s got a finger to look at. It looks like just a sprain.” His throwing hand? “I don’t think so.” You’ve talked about WR Mario Manningham’s route running before, but does it get much better than his move on that touchdown? “No. That was outstanding. Did a great job selling the slant and then coming out of it. And to get yourself wide open like that, that’s an outstanding route.” We got to see a little bit more of QB Colin Kaepernick this week. He’s obviously becoming a staple of a reliable option in this offense? “Yes. The ability that he has, I think you have to account for that. You have to take advantage of that. He’s got playmaking ability. And again, in a game where the playmakers really shone brightly. There were some shining stars out there today.”

Page 6: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

He had the fumble, obviously, at the end of the second quarter. Did you say anything to him at the half to kind of keep his confidence? You knew that he’d get those opportunities again later in the game? “Well, just emphasized the ball security with him again.” The touchdown pass to WR Kyle Williams, that was a back-shoulder throw. Was that a quarterback read, or was that by design, that back shoulder? “That was the quarterback. We practice back-shoulder throws and things like that, but we’d never done it on that play, that particular play. That was great improvisation by both Alex and Kyle.” What does it mean to have the most offensive yards ever in 49ers history in a game? “I think that means something to the fellas. And they did a heck of a job there, in that throwing and catching and protecting and rushing the football. That was well earned.” The last couple weeks, you guys won the toss and elected to take the ball earlier. You’ve deferred before. What goes into that decision? “Just a few things, really. Feel, what the wind’s doing.” The last one, after the Vikings game you elected to take the ball. It really set the tone. Is that something now that you want your offense to really set the tone? “Yeah, could be. We’ll get [offensive coordinator] Greg Roman up here, too. Let you folks talk to Greg. Fantastic job by him and all our coaches. Thank you.”

Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman Press Conference – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

Feeling pretty good after that performance? “It was a good performance. I think we left some out there. We had some frustrating penalties in the first half. But, we came in at halftime, regrouped. Just decided we were going to start over. That turnover before the half I think was big, to get it in there. And just came in and said, ‘Hey we’re going to start over.’ We left some food on the table in the first half. But really, guys had a great attitude all week and we didn’t want it to be one of those situations like the Bills had last week when they were able to shut a team down for quite a while. So, all the credit really goes to the players. Thought [QB] Alex Smith played tremendously. Thought [QB Colin Kaepernick] Kap was a nice change of pace. [RB] Frank [Gore] ran hard. The O-line blocked good. Receivers did a great job of winning when they were isolated, whether it be [TE] Vernon [Davis], [WR] Mario [Manningham], [WR Michael Crabtree] Crab, [WR] Randy [Moss], [WR Kyle Williams] K.Dub. All those guys did a good job. So, it’s a great team win.” You’ve seen the instillation films. You know the history of this organization offensively. To set the team record for most yards in the game, what does that mean to you? “I think it’s just a credit to the players and I think it’s a credit to what we can accomplish as we move along. Yards, not a big statistical guy. Don’t get caught up in it. But at the same time, just in the normal course of events being able to put up that kind of production, obviously we’re doing something right. And really think our organization has done a really good job bringing in the right kind of guys in here. And we’re going to continue to try to keep our offense diverse, hard to prepare for. And just have

Page 7: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

always felt that if a team doesn’t quite know what you’re doing, it puts your players at an advantage. And we’ll see if we can keep doing that.” Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said QB Alex Smith played a near perfect game. “He did.” What do you have to do to have a perfect game? “That’s a good question. When we figure that one out, we’ll get back to you.” How much more can he do? “He was just on fire and on the money. It’s interesting because his week of practice was very similar to what it’s been every week. So, really didn’t see it coming, but boy he was hot today. And you could see that Crabtree was hot. And you could see Frank was running. He was hot. And everybody brought their ‘A’ game to the stadium today. So, it’s pretty fun when that happens.” When everything was executed, I know there were those plays with Kaepernick, and just really mixed plays as you defined earlier. How pleasing was it that everything went well? “It’s always a good feeling. It was frustrating early on, though. We had a third and two. We hit Vernon on the deep cross, that got called back. There were some frustrating things early and we just decided it was time to go beat the Bills and not beat ourselves. But it was good, really good job by our players again. We’ve got a great group. They’ve got the right stuff. And we’ve just got to keep trying to get better every week.” Given how hot Alex Smith was in the game, why did you choose to call mostly running plays down by the goal line? “They gave us an un-scouted look. I’ve got to tip our hat to the Bills. They out-charged their d-line. They had never shown that before. And it was a great job by them. They got us there. They caught us there. That’s a tough one when you don’t know it’s coming, just speaking from experience. And they got us twice. So, obviously probably could have called some different plays there. But, I’ve got to tip my hat to their coaching staff on that one. They got us. They got us there.” How did you guys decide when to take Alex out of the game? “It just was getting to the point where it looked like we were going to get the win. And wanted to get [QB Colin Kaepernick] Kap some experience in his understudy role, continue his development. And also, didn’t want Alex to take any unnecessary hits from that point.” Did you see Alex throw deep early? “We did, we did. And we really wanted to. We wanted to get a lead and play with a lead this game. That was the emphasis all week was to get a lead and try to make these guys one dimensional on offense. And maybe let them be a little bit more willing to take some risks on defense, which would open up some opportunity. We’ve been seeing so many different defenses from teams that we don’t see, which is a credit to our players. Un-scouted looks, they come in with a totally different plan. So, there was a little feeling out process there at the beginning. Just kind of scratching around to see what their plan was. But, we really wanted to take some shots. We hit Vernon there early. We would have hit him in the first drive, but we got that third down called back I believe. We hit him on the third and two. But, really felt good about that play when we hit him on the sideline. It was a great throw by Alex. But yeah, there were

Page 8: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

some opportunities for sure. And our guys won the one-one-one matchups. When we had isolations, one-on-one our guys won. And the quarterbacks made great throws.” Did you poke yourself in the eye? “No. It’s a mystery on what happened there. I think it’s just lack of sleep and thinking too hard. But, just woke up one day and it was there. But, they told me I’m going to live so I’ll be all right.” Did you happen to see Alex’s first pitch at the San Francisco Giants game last night? “No, but I heard about it though. We talked about it last night at the meeting. He said he was working, like any smart pitcher or quarterback, he was just throwing some junk in there, keeping it low. Looking for a grounder, and just using the pitch count to his advantage.” It was low and outside. “It was? He didn’t tell me about the outside part. He just told me about the low. Yeah, sinker ball.” How much sleep do you think you got in this week? “That’s a good question. I think our whole staff coming back from New York, we didn’t sleep much in New York. And guys, our staff, they’re just studs. They just do such a good job at every position. Really love working with these guys. But, sleep is something we’re going to try to focus on in the offseason.”

QB Alex Smith Press Conference – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

On his experience throwing out the first pitch last night for the SF Giants: “Yeah I was keeping the ball down, isn’t that what good pitchers do? I was working the count, I had an open base... Yeah, it was great. Last night was awesome, obviously. All jokes aside, it was great. Today though, this was the best. To get a win like this, a team win like this, across the board, and playing well.” This was a historical game, as far as statistics are concerned. “Yeah, it’s crazy, I didn’t know that until the end there when they said it. Very cool, a lot of offenses and great offenses. When you think of the 49ers you think of great offenses, so this is quite an honor. It’s great to be with those guys.” Your last 300-yard game was back in 2010, can you put that in perspective in how far you’ve come since that game? “Yeah, it seems like a long time ago. It was a long time ago, I feel like. It’s a completely different world. I give credit to the guys around me. I think those guys are playing great and make my job easy.” Was it a priority to get some deep balls and move the ball down the field? “It’s been a priority for us, for whatever reason, I think it just came up today. Even last week it was a priority for us and we took some shots, but just the nature of how they were playing us last week. There were some shots last week that didn’t happen because of how they were playing. Today they came up, we took them and were a little more aggressive.”

Page 9: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

Do you think they were expecting you to throw deep? “No, but we were playing much more balanced. Obviously the way we ran the ball last week, they had to respect it. We got the opportunities and guys made plays outside.” The way you guys mixed in multiple sets and bringing in QB Colin Kaepernick, do you think that’s opened up the offense? “Yeah, I think it’s a great thing. I mean it’s another thing that defense is going to have to prepare for. I mean, absolutely, hey get ready for this. You only have so many reps during the week to get ready, the more they have to think about the better.” How big of a win is this? “This is a great team victory. The defense holding them to 3 points is great. We only gave up 3 points in two weeks, that’s incredible. Offensively, it could have been even better. The crazy thing, is in the first half, we had a lot of penalty yards. Had some big plays called back, that’s the scary thing, it could have been even worse.” Your touchdown throw to WR Kyle Williams, was that back shoulder the whole way? “Once I saw it, it wasn’t designed that way, I kind of reacted to it. Kyle was turned, the guy really had him running. I took a shot and he made a really great play.” What does this mean for next week? “I mean, we played them twice last year. There’s a lot of baggage, a lot of history. A little unfinished business, I guess.” Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman plays a big role in play calling. When you’re in the huddle and you hear, do you know when it has the potential to be a big play? “I felt great all the time, but especially today. Player caller intent, when the play call comes in I know exactly what he’s thinking, what we’re trying to do, and what we’re trying to accomplish. I think the whole offense is constantly putting us in good situations, him especially. Really thinking through things all week and putting us in good situations. I don’t think there’s any play that comes, that we don’t feel has the potential to be a great play.” At what point did you hurt your finger? “There at the very end, in that last pass attempt to [TE] Vernon Davis.” On LB Patrick Willis’ forced fumble: “Yeah, big change there. I was just talking about that after the game, with some of the guys. I think it was a huge point in the game. To get the turnover, to get the 7 points to go in 17-3 versus 10-6 is a big difference.” What’s the most rewarding work for you? “The win. That’s what we came here to do. It doesn’t matter 38-3 or 6-3, bottom line is that next week our record will say 4-1. Come late in the year, all that’s going to matter, is getting these wins.” How much do you look at the standings, or is it even too early to even do that?

Page 10: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

“Yeah, I think the division gets more of the focus. We’re always keeping an eye on the division, constantly looking at what they’re doing. Record wise, especially.” Do you consider this game to be the best individual performance of your professional career? “I have no idea, honestly. I mean, it was a great team victory, especially the best offensive performance that I’ve ever been a part of, as far as 11 guys.”

LB Ahmad Brooks Press Conference – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

Can you talk about the effort of your defense today? “It’s very difficult, with the Buffalo Bills being ranked No. 6 in the league in scoring points, averaging 28 points per game, that’s big in the NFL when you can shut a team that averaged that many points to three, then your defense played a good game.” Was this one of the most dominant performances put up, just all around, offense, defense? “When you have an offense overall 600-and-something, that says it all. And with the defense playing the way it did, yeah.” Are you pretty proud of the way the offense played? That was the most yards in 49ers history. “Pat them on the back for them doing what they did. If we can do that every week and just capitalize on what we did today and keep moving forward” Not to take away from your moment, but you’ve got the New York Giants coming in, how big is that game and how proud are you that you seem to be peaking right now as a team heading into that game? “It makes a big difference to start peaking at this point in time right now. It’s a time where we all need to come together and play our best game of football.”

WR Michael Crabtree Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

It seemed like they cleared it out for you and you blew them away on that fake post corner. “I just went out there and made a play.” How are you feeling about this offense with all the balance that you’re showing? “Big test will be next week. We did good today but we’re looking forward to next week. We’ll see how we do next week.” You guys are a little bit better equipped, healthier at the receiver position. How different are you from when you played them the last time? “We’re the same team, it’s just putting it together. Going out there and playing, no matter who we’re playing. That game is over with. Everybody did a good job. [TE] Vernon [Davis] did a good job, quarterbacks did a good job, [QB Colin Kaepernick] Kap, the running backs, offensive line, defense

Page 11: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

showed up. But we have more games to play. I know I want to rejoice on that game but I can’t really get too hyped about that game because we have so many good games ahead of us.” Spreading it around with so many guys touching the ball, I think 10 or 11 different guys had a piece of it, running or catching the ball. Just talk about that, how it keeps defenses off balance and everyone’s hungry for the rock. “We’ve got athletes, we’ve got playmakers. We just have to use them, we’ve got to create that identity, like I said we can’t talk about it, we’ve just got to go do it.”

T Anthony Davis Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

Personally it must have gone pretty well with DE Mario Williams and you? “Yeah.” Did you have any troubles? “No.” It seemed like you guys are making good on what WR Michael Crabtree was saying a couple of weeks ago, that as an offense you want to keep up with the defense. Is that the way it’s feeling? “The defense helped us too because they got us out on the field. Receivers were down the field blocking, O-line blocking, running backs were doing their job, quarterbacks getting us in the [inaudible] and doing what they do. It was everybody.” I was talking to T Joe Staley and he was saying you remade your body this year. Is that true and how did you do that? “Just work every day.” Were you here? “Yeah, I was here.” Now were you here the whole time previously? “No this is my first offseason. I think I am getting older. My birthday is coming up so I’m getting a little stronger, I think that’s what it is. I’m about to be 23, I’m getting my man strength. That’s what the old people say.”

TE Vernon Davis Press Conference – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

On setting the 49ers record for most total yards: “We’re talking about legends who played here, legends, Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice. To be able to perform at this level and do it better than what they did, that’s a huge honor, a huge honor.”

Page 12: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

Was there a sense that the Buffalo Bills packed the box, like a lot of teams do and you and QB Alex Smith were going to beat it with the pass, and you did that and what does that mean going forward to what defenses do going forward? “[Offensive Coordinator] Coach Greg Roman, based on last year, you see some of the routes that either me or [TE] Delanie [Walker], we take off up the sidelines. That’s something we put in because if the safety comes down, they don’t have anything over the top.” Being involved in the most yards for a 49ers game, how does that make you feel to be on this team right now? “It’s amazing just being a part of it, being a part of something special I should say. And it’s only the beginning. That’s the way I feel. It makes me feel so good inside just knowing that I’m a part of a team and today we did something very special.”

RB Frank Gore Press Conference – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

How did it feel in the second half, it just seemed like everything you were running was gold? “It felt great. That’s gold. I think everything started going great for us because our passing game was on early. [Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman] Coach G-Ro did a great job putting us in great situations. The O-Line did a hell of a job. I’ve got to give all the credit to them. I just ran the ball. They did everything.” It just seemed like a some point the Buffalo Bills didn’t know what was happening. They thought it was a pass play and it would be a run play and you would get 10 yards. “We had them off balance. Like I said, you’ve got to give it to the coordinator, give it to Coach G-Ro, he did a great job. We played hard as a team. Every man’s out there for each other. The O-Line did a great job, receivers, running backs. Whoever had the ball, we tried to make big plays and things just started happening for us.” ‘ When you’re part of an effort like that, two 100-yard receivers, you, QB Alex Smith throwing for 300 yards, what’s it like? “You think about it, we were still hurting ourselves. We left a lot out there. But it lets you know how hard we’re working, our second year in the offense. We’re just growing. Every week, we’re trying to get better and better.”

QB Colin Kaepernick Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

You get in the open field, do you feel like you can outrun most people most of the time? “Yeah I do feel like that. I mean a lot of times we get in the open field because our offensive line is doing a great job, [FB] Bruce [Miller] had some key blocks today when I was in there. They were just giving me a lot of space out there.” And what about throwing the ball, getting a few opportunities to do that a little bit as well?

Page 13: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

“Yeah, the more I can do to help this team, the better I’ll be as far as running all those things, so I just want to get out there as much as I can and do as much as I can to help this team.” It seems like you’re getting out not just for more plays, but there’s more versatility in how they’re using you, do you think overall that’s really going to help the team if people can’t really predict what you’re going to do on the field? “Yeah, you never want a defense to know what you’re going to do. Our coaches do an amazing job of game planning and I’ll leave that up to them.” Can you see any confusion on the defense when you’re in there? “It depends on what plays we’re running. But sometimes there’s confusion, sometimes it just messes with their responsibilities what we’re trying to do. So it really just depends on the play.” I’m sure you weren’t feeling great about the fumble, did head coach Jim Harbaugh or anybody else say anything to you about it at halftime? “Yeah, just that they’re going to come back and to keep playing. That was the biggest thing everybody told me.” How awesome was it that [LB] Patrick [Willis] got the forced fumble right after that, did that kind of pick you up? “Yeah, it makes you feel a little bit better about it. It’s still something you don’t want to do. He shouldn’t have been in that position, but the fact that we got the ball back that quick was definitely a big pick me up.” How’s it feel for you to be involved in the offense like you were and getting that touchdown? “Amazing. Any time I can be on the field, I’ll be happy.” Are you aware that the team set a record for total offense today? And when you look back at those great 49ers teams, what does it mean to you to be part of that? “That’s amazing. When you go back down the list of Hall of Famers that were on teams like that. To break a record like that really means a lot to this whole team.”

T Joe Staley Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

On how the 49ers offense performed against the Bills defense: “I don’t know. All I know is we were calling plays and they were working. [QB] Alex [Smith] was on fire today. Went down field with a lot of passes early and receivers did a great job of getting open. Our offensive line did our job. We were able to protect pretty well today. I think Alex got maybe touched two or three times. It was an all-around great performance on offense. Everybody was on their ‘A’ game today and that’s what can happen when everybody is on the same page and everybody is executing.” How impressive is it that so many guys are contributing? “It’s amazing. We were very creative on offense. We’ve seen more and more as far as creativity goes on offense. We’re mixing up the packages and personnel and it keeps their defense on their toes. They have

Page 14: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

to prepare for so much. I think the volume that they have to prepare for week-in, week-out is going to make this team dangerous.” You’ve got RB Frank Gore goes over 100, two receivers go over 100, QB Alex Smith throws for 300. How impressive is that? “It was a great day. Like I said this is what can happen when everyone’s executing on the same page. Everybody was just very crisp today. We obviously have to cut down on the penalties, that killed us early. We probably left about 100 yards out there on the field today, which is scary because that’s how good our offense can be. Just very pleased with the execution, we were able to overcome those penalties to get scoring drives. And also when we were backed up, we were able to take it out and those are situations that are field position changers.”

WR Kyle Williams Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

You’ve had a great year, how nice is it the way this year has gone so far? “It’s been good so far. It’s just one of those things where every single week you’ve got to do whatever you’ve got to do to win the game. This week they called my number and I was able to make a play. I’m just happy to be able to help. .” How close did we come to seeing the full capability of this offense today? “I think there’s still more. I think it’s hard to say when you have production like that, but we just have so much talent over here and just to be able to try to capitalize on all of it, every single game will be tough because we’ve got so many weapons. It’s one of those things where we got to do whatever it takes to win every game and no matter what the formula is you have to do what you have to do.” On the touchdown you caught from [QB] Alex [Smith], he threw it to the back shoulder, was that a read or was that by design? “That was just a great throw by him. Honestly, I’ve got to give him all the credit because he saw where the DB was positioned, he saw he was up high on me so he put it in a place where only I could get it and it was a great play by him. He played great today, he played awesome.” You fell to your knees, you looked like you were pretty emotional getting that touchdown. “It was for my grandmother. My grandmother actually passed away from breast cancer so I’m always looking forward to the whole month being able to wear pink and support it and I got a touchdown today so I was just saying hello.” Do you see a different Alex this year than you saw last year? “Not really, last year he was good too. Last year he was great, he was great for us every game last year and I think he is going to continue to be. Since I have gotten here I have seen Alex be a great quarterback and nothing short of that. I am one of his No. 1 supporters. I love him back there.”

Page 15: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

Head Coach Chan Gailey Press Conference – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

Opening comments: “Obviously, there’s something I’m not doing correctly with this football team in the second half. Two games in a row after halftime, we’ve played extremely poor and that’s as nice as you can put it. Obviously, the turnover before the half really hurt and the turnover where we could’ve gone down and made it 24-10 really hurt. We’re not playing as physical as we should and we’re not doing the things we need to do.” In the second half, and considering the score was 45-3, do you feel like they gave up? “No, I don’t think our team gives up. They hurt and they get rattled. Part of my responsibility is to not let them get rattled. When things start going bad, you have to be strong mentally. I’ve got to find a way to keep our team up.” How good are the 49ers? “They’re a strong football team. They are extremely strong physically and in all phases of the game.” What do you say to the guys before you come out and address us? “I basically say the same things to them that I say to you. I tell them that I don’t have any answers today, but I have to find the answers. We’ve done it in the past.” How much are you letting them off the hook when you say it’s your fault? “It’s not entirely my fault, but it starts with me. That’s my responsibility. I understand that. When you take this job, you understand that it’s your responsibility. We’re playing good in the first half, but we’re not playing good in the second half. We played okay in the first half, I shouldn’t say good. It should’ve been 10-3 at the half. That’s what it should’ve been. We’re not doing things in the second half that we need to do. Something has to change.” How drastic are the changes going to be in time for the game against Arizona? “I don’t know. That’s what I have to see. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’ve never been here before, so I’m in new territory.” How did [RB] Fred [Jackson] and [RB] C.J. [Spiller] feel after the game? “I think they came out of this one pretty good. So we should be able to take the next step next week. Until they get back after playing a few weeks and feel comfortable playing with those injuries, it’s a little bit of an issue. It seemed like we ran the football with two-and-three yard gains, not four, five or six yards. And it felt like that put us behind the sticks. That’s what it felt like and I have to watch film to figure it out.”

Page 16: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick Press Conference – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

Does this bring a feeling of embarrassment? “Yeah, I mean yeah that’s two weeks in a row, obviously not the way we want to come out play. Offensively just never got anything going and I feel like that is not who we are as an offense but unfortunately that’s what we put out there today.” You stressed the importance this week of responding bouncing back having a good performance particularly after your performance on the road, against a quality opponent and it hasn’t happened where do you go from here? “You have to try to do the same thing next week. You know you have to give a lot of credit to the 49ers they are a tough team to beat and this is a tough place to play. They didn’t do anything that fooled us defensively I mean. They just line up you know what they’re gonna do and they just say you have to beat us and they did a better job than we did today. There was no fancy stuff out there it was they are who they are and they played better than us today.” The interception on the one in the third quarter, you were under pressure and what would you do differently? “I’d probably just not throw at all there and try to scramble and get back up on the line of scrimmage or throw it out of bounds but yea it wasn’t a wise decision.” Was the wind a factor at all? “I mean the wind was whipping around pretty good but that’s something you have to take into account.” You guys were 2-1 two weeks ago and things seemed to be going the way they were intended. These were two good teams you lost to but these are the team’s you got to beat to contend. Is it demoralizing to have fallen so flat against teams you know you have to compete against? “Yea it’s tough and this was a whole different game than last week. Last week we played well at times, we had a nice lead in the second half and it all fell apart as we all know. This week they flat out dominated us from beginning to end and again really took it to us in the second half.” How catastrophic is this? Two games like this? “I mean it’s tough. It’s tough on team morale, it’s tough on all of that stuff now being 2-3, but you can’t let these losses linger. I don’t know that, I didn’t feel like we came into this game with some wounds from New England. I felt like we came into this game with a fresh mindset and we just got beat by, beat bad by a better team today, but you can’t let these things linger. We’ve got another interesting week for us staying out here in Arizona and preparing and playing another very good team so we’ve just got to come out and play better.” Considering how the last two games have gone do you think that’s a good thing or a bad thing to play a team like that? “I don’t think it matters, I don’t think that we prefer it one way or the other. I think every week in the NFL it just seems like you have to come to play if you want to win a game, especially when you play the top tier teams. If you don’t come and you don’t play effectively you’re not going to have a chance.”

Page 17: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

LB Nick Barnett

Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

Did you get the sense that they were kicking your tail play after play? “I think that we weren’t making plays. Bottom line is we weren’t coming up. They were running the ball at I don’t know how many yards per carry, and it didn’t seem like it was to our favor. They were running through the middle at seven yards maybe per carry. That is what it felt like. I definitely got a sense that we weren’t doing what we were supposed to.” We know how badly you guys wanted to rebound from last week, how shocked/amazed are you that it turned out in the fashion that it did? “After last week, I would have bet that this team would have come out and played a lot better than we played today. Now going on two weeks and giving up that many run yards and giving up the plays that we gave up, it’s disappointing and deflating, but I don’t lose hope and I’m going to keep striking and keep pushing forward because I know that we have the potential and the make-up that we have in this room. We just have to show it.” Is it stunning the amount of talent on this team and the results that you are getting? “It is very stunning to me. I would not have imagined ever being in this situation in this defense. I believe in all of these guys. I believe in their heart, their potential and the way that we play. For whatever reason it is, we are not doing what we are supposed too.”

DT Marcell Dareus Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

What went wrong with the defense? “It was just breaking down in certain areas. [Head] Coach [Chan] Gailey will get together and fix it. We will break down the mental errors and we will fix it. He is working on it.” Did you guys expect them to come out passing? “We kind of expected them to run the ball pretty heavy, wear us down and then try to open the pass game up. They have a couple of big plays and big play passes and that is what happened.” How embarrassing is this, you guys are a prideful bunch? “It is just a game.” Do you think the fans think that it is just a game? “Of course they think that it is just a game, but it is just tough right now. It is tough on the team, tough on the fans, that is a tough question that some people don’t want to answer, but that is life right now. We are going to get better at it, work it out, it is just tough for everybody right now.”

Page 18: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

RB Fred Jackson Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

Do you think the team quit today? “I wouldn’t say we quit. We made some mistakes. That is just about what it is, fixing mistakes. We had turnovers that lead to points. We have three and outs, that puts our defense back out there, as an offensive unit we can’t do that.” Do you know how many yards you gave up today? “I have no idea. Any time you give up that many yards, you are not going to win a lot of football games. At the same time we didn’t put up any points on offense. We can’t have that. Everyone on this team needs to look at themselves in the mirror and see what it is they can do better to make this team better.” How bad is this stretch of games right now? ”It is bad, but it is early. That is the thing we have to focus on, that this is a long season. We still have a lot we can get done, but we just have to get it corrected now, we can’t let it drag on any longer.

WR Stevie Johnson Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

Is this your first game back playing in the Bay Area? “Yes. It is my first game out here in the Bay, first game at the Stick.” What was it like to play here? “Overall, I have to say that it was not good because we lost and it was a bad loss. The whole feeling was great because I had a lot of family out here. This stadium is legendary to me, so I am happy that I got the opportunity to play here. I was hopeful that it would have been better than what it was.” How embarrassing is it to have this happen two weekends in a row to completely fall apart? “It is terrible. You don’t practice as hard as we do to come out on show time and lose how we are losing. It is something that we need to find, something is wrong and we need to find it. We have to get back to work and see what happens next week when we go up against a tough Arizona squad.” There is a lot of blame to spread offensively you can’t get anything going, today nothing at all. “It is disappointing like I said, we put in work, we have plays, unfortunate situations occur throughout the game and we have to get better and get over that.”

LB Bryan Scott Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

Did you feel you had good intensity to start the game? “I thought we came out hard and played well in the first half. In the second half, we just couldn’t get any flow. It is embarrassing, I’m sick of it, because we are better than this.”

Page 19: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

Your defense seemed committed to the base today, and then the 49ers started attacking you guys with Vernon Davis, do you think they took advantage of the base defense? “It doesn’t matter who is on the field. Whether it is nickel, whether it is base, we have a job to do and we got to get it done.” How do you pick up the pieces, how do you start getting it done? “24 hour rule, we look at the film we go from there. Time is of the essence. We talked about sense of urgency, we talked about accountability, we talked about finishing, all of these things come into play. We are sick of this, this is terrible.

DE Mario Williams Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

As the face of this defense how embarrassing is this for you for the second straight game? “It is tough. We are giving up huge plays. We have to be accountable across the board from the first player to the 11th player on this defense. We have to figure out what in the world is going on. We are giving up huge chucks of yardage at any given time and we can’t have that.” What is wrong with the pass rush? “We did a lot of movement today. We were thinking that it would be more run. They kept seven to eight man protection and gave hard play action. So we were kind of moving around a little bit and I think at the end of the day, we didn’t execute often. We didn’t react to that across the board. That cost us. We can’t have just one guy breaking loose, or getting back there because that is still going to make it one dimensional. The quarterback is just going to step up or drift over. I think that we really didn’t come off that aggressive run read for the play action.” Head Coach Chan [Gailey] said that this was his fault? “No. You don’t get beat like that from your head coach. I don’t care what you say. He is not out there going to get sacks, he is not out there covering receivers, he is not out there getting turnovers. This is like I said from the No.1 to No. 11 guy on defense. This is all on us. We have to get turnovers. I think we lost the turnover battle again this week and that hasn’t been good for us since day one. It is all on us. We have to focus on football.” Do you think you finished the game, did you run through the finish line? “Not with that score. At the end of the day you can go out there and keep chopping wood, but for them to go out there and to score and finish the way we did, we can’t look at anybody and say that we did.”

S George Wilson Post-Game Quotes – October 7, 2012 San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills

As far as the defense, did you think there was a big difference in play between the first and second halves?

Page 20: SAN FRANCiSCO 49ERS GAME RELEASE - SB Nationassets.sbnation.com/assets/1511585/San_Francisco_49ers... · 2012. 10. 8. · San Francisco 49ers vs. Buffalo Bills Game Notes Sunday,

“We felt good in the start. We gave up a big play on the opening drive, when they got to the goal line we held them to a field goal. Then they got that first touchdown and we were down 10-3 at that point. Then right before the half we turned the ball over and they scored another touchdown to convert the turnover into points, which put us down two scores at the half. We came back out and they dominated us in the second half. There is no way to paint it up, they dominated us, they made more plays than we did, which ended up in the outcome we had.” In the first half it looked like you missed tackles and they got a lot of yards after the catch, and that was an issue last week as well. “We have to tackle. The offense is good enough in this league where they are going to make some plays. Our offense has some playmakers and they make plays. When they make plays we have to be able to tackle and minimize the gain, so we can line up and play another down. When you miss tackles and they bleed you for yards after contact or after the catch, it gives them a shorter field and just puts you on the ropes. Fundamentally, we have to be able to tackle, all good defenses tackle.” You are almost a third of the way through the season, how are you going to stop this? “We have to. This can’t become our trend. We have to find a way to stop the bleeding and be on the winning side of things. We won’t be able to get that done, if we continue to play this way. It is about executing the job and getting the job done, that is what it boils down to.”
