Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 with his encycli-cal to respond to growing nationalism and secularism. He recog-nized that these related societal ills would breed increasing hostil-ity against the Church. His encyclical reminds the faithful that while governments and philosophies come and go, Christ reigns as king forever.

El Papa Pío XI instituyó esta fiesta en 1925 con su encíclica para responder al creciente nacionalismo y secularismo. Hell Is not God's Creation

We all know and believe that Jesus will "come again in glory to judge the living and the dead." We affirm that belief each week when we pray the Creed. But it is possible that we have

not thought deeply enough about the meaning of this final Judgment.

For example, we know that God is infinitely merciful. But in

today's Gospel, Jesus welcomes some people into his eternal Kingdom, but others go off to eternal punishment. It is hard for us to understand fully how God's mercy can go together

with eternal punishment, but we can understand it partially.

Today's Gospel passage can help us. When Jesus addresses the first group of people, the ones entering heaven, he says to

them: "Come, you who are blessed by my Father..." But when he addresses the second group, the ones entering eter-nal punishment, he says to them: "Depart from you, you ac-

cursed." Notice how the blessing received by the first group came from God ("blessed by my Father"), but the curse

received by the second group did not ("accursed"). The se-cond group purposely and freely chose to live their earthly

lives egocentrically. They didn't enter into a friendship with God, because they didn't want the lifestyle of love and self-

giving that goes with it. For their entire lives they resisted and rejected God's many invitations - the voice of conscience, the teachings of the Church, the example of believers, the lives of

the saints, the beauties of creation. They freely chose to live separate from God. Now, after lives like that, would it

be merciful for God to force them to spend eternity in his presence? No - it would be cruel.

Hell is not God's creation, it is the creation of those who feely and consistently choose to live without God.

El Infierno no es la Creación de Dios

Todos sabemos y creemos que Jesús "vendrá otra vez en gloria pa-ra juzgar a vivos y muertos". Afirmamos esa creencia cada semana

cuando rezamos el Credo. Pero es posible que no hayamos pensa-do lo suficiente sobre el significado de este Juicio final.

Por ejemplo, sabemos que Dios es infinitamente misericordioso.

Pero en el evangelio de hoy, Jesús da la bienvenida a algunas per-

sonas a su Reino eterno, pero otras van al castigo eterno. Es difícil para nosotros entender completamente cómo la misericordia de

Dios puede ir unida al castigo eterno, pero podemos entenderlo parcialmente.

El pasaje del Evangelio de hoy puede ayudarnos. Cuando Jesús se dirige al primer grupo de personas, los que entran al cielo, les dice:

"Venid, benditos de mi Padre ..." Pero cuando se dirige al segundo grupo, los que entran en el castigo eterno, les dice: ellos: "Apartaos vosotros, malditos". Note cómo la bendición recibida por el primer

grupo vino de Dios ("bendecida por mi Padre"), pero la maldición recibida por el segundo grupo no ("maldecidos"). El segundo gru-

po eligió deliberada y libremente vivir su vida terrenal de manera egocéntrica. No entablaron una amistad con Dios, porque no que-

rían el estilo de vida de amor y entrega que lo acompaña. Durante toda su vida resistieron y rechazaron las muchas invitaciones de Dios: la voz de la conciencia, las enseñanzas de la Iglesia, el ejem-

plo de los creyentes, la vida de los santos, las bellezas de la crea-ción. Eligieron libremente vivir separados de Dios. Ahora, después

de vidas así, ¿sería misericordioso que Dios los obligara a pasar la eternidad en su presencia? No, sería cruel.

El infierno no es la creación de Dios, es la creación de aquellos que eligen vivir sin Dios con sentimiento y coherencia.
