SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase “Sunday best” has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it’s a healthy sign that we’re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criti-cizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man’s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark’s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Litany of Lament and Repentance and Rosary The Pope and Bishops have called for “a solemn time of prayer and fasting on Sept 14 and 15 in

response to the sad and abhorrent news concerning clergy sexual misconduct, particularly here in our own nation. Sept 14 is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross and the following day is the Memorial of

Our Lady of Sorrows. Both days give all the faithful—clergy and laity—a time of grace to turn to God and implore His Divine Assistance in this plight that our Church is facing together.” Bishop Estévez.

On Friday, Sept 14 we invite everyone to fast and join us for a Litany of Lament and Repentance. On Saturday, Sept 15 we turn to Mary and unite as a family to pray the Most Holy Rosary. “Let us call upon her never-failing intercession for God’s children, especially for the victims of these heinous acts,

that God’s healing grace will be theirs in abundance.” Bishop Estévez

Use Your Envelopes or use On-Line Giving

We encourage everyone to use their envelopes or On Line Giving. Think of your envelopes / on-line giving as

a gift to God. You take the time to thoughtfully, prayerfully choose your gift, wrap it & present it

eagerly to our Lord. Many times families will ask for a letter stating that they are registered, participating

members of San Sebastian in order to become a God-parent, Confirmation Sponsor or to enroll in Catholic

Schools. Using your envelope or Online Giving makes our job easier & allows us to say “Yes! this family is registered & participating here at San Sebastian. “

Second Collections: September 9, Parish Insurance Subsidy September 16, Building Maintenance September 23, Outreach for the Poor September 30, Religious Education Enrichment Center Diocesan Collection/Non Parochial Collection: September 23 A portion of our regular collection will go to Help Spread the Faith Catholic Communication Appeal
