their preferred or 'normal' times. It is a balancing act between obtaining revenue the Club needs from these bookings and protecting member privileges. Significant thought goes into structuring these bookings,we appreciate member cooperation and apologise for any inconvenience caused. We shall attempt to supply advance notice where possible. THE LEXUS CUP A GOLF COMPETITION LIKE NO OTHER The Lexus Cup recognises and rewards golfers of all levels across Australia. This year there are two exciting series to take part in. The first series is currently running but it is not too late for members to sign up! The second will begin July 1st. Thanks to our Primary sponsor Lexus we have 2 magnificent Lexus IS 250 sedans, each valued at up to $65,000, as major prizes - one to be awarded at the end of Series 1 and the other at the end of Series 2. All members have to do is register online and play in their regular competition rounds. Golf Link automatically takes the registered players' best 5 and 1 worst of their regular competition rounds in a 15 week period, calculates a score and adds each players score to the Lexus Cup National Leaderboard. Prizes are awarded for the best weekly and monthly performances across A, B and C grades, so golfers compete only against other golfers at their level. Come November, the best performing top 2 in each series from each grade, plus the Top 2 women from each series, will play off in our sensational Grand Final at Royal Melbourne Golf Course and enjoy the hospitality of the Lexus Marquee at the 2013 Melbourne Cup. Last year we had a great response from players and their Clubs with over 35,000 eligible club golfers enjoying the thrill of competition and sharing in hundreds of thousands of dollars in prizes. But the most exciting thing about the Lexus Cup is that in 2012 the Lexus Cup was directly responsible for those club golfers playing 10% more golf than the golf rounds they had played in the previous corresponding three month period. Bunkers There are a number of bunkers around the course at present that have matting protruding above the sand. If you are unfortunate enough to land in a bunker the matting can be treated as an immovable obstruction and nearest point of relief taken in the bunker (the same as if there was a drainage grate in the bunker). Rules Night I would like to acknowledge the work of Helen Frost, Paul Bamforth, Sharon Hughes and Shaun Smith in pulling together the rules night on behalf of the Junior Committee. They all put a lot of work into organising the event and deserve the credit for doing so. Also of course, David Blake from Golf Victoria for giving really informative rules and tips to the Juniors in our Club. Oh and some of the more senior players in our Club also :)

Please remember when playing our course that the yellow and red stakes are immovable obstructions, which means if you pull them out you are subject to a two stroke penalty. Sanctuary Lakes Foundation The Foundation is supporting a young and up-coming soccer player, Cameron Davies. He has been selected to the Victorian Team for the Under 19 National Championships in Canberra on 4 August 2013.

Foundation committee members will be selling raffle tickets at a table set-up outside the Pro-shop this Saturday morning 8.00am to 11.00am. Please support him by buying a ticket.

CAPTAINS CORNER (special edition)

Allan Smith

Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club, First Captain, Honorary Life Member - Gentleman Golfer

It is with great sadness we hear that Sanctuary Lakes first Captain and Captain for many years has passed away after a long illness. Our thoughts are with his wife Pam and the family at this time. Allan was a stalwart at our Club and loved his golf and the golf club. His passion for both was always evident at Pennant season. Allan would rise early to see the Colts off at their early morning tee times then travel to next venue often across Melbourne to see the Seniors off in the afternoon. He would arrive home late in the evening having walked two courses keeping an eye on the golf and our golfers. Allan was always happy with a win but especially cherished a win from the Colts (Under 25). As a Captain, Allan could be always relied upon for golf rulings, golf disputes and great occasions. His knowledge of the game and its many facets made Allan the go-to person in seeking advice on any aspect of the game. Our Men's Club Championship Cup bears his name and will be a fitting reminder to golfers winning the ultimate club competition for years to come. Allan will be missed but never forgotten, his honorary Life Membership awarded in 2012 was not only deserved but also extremely popular such was his stature among his peers.

Allan Smith - RIP Dermot Heron wrote the above and I thank him, as it is a view held by all of us who had anything to do with Allan. The Board would also like to convey their sadness at the passing of Allan. Allan's Funeral Service followed by a celebration of his life will be at the Sanctuary Lakes Club at 1.00pm on Friday 21 June. Large numbers are anticipated, if you could walk or pool into single vehicles, it would be appreciated, as parking is limited.

Captains Corner by Kevin Birtles

Allan Smith, Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club, First Captain, Honorary Life Member - Gentleman Golfer Last Friday we all celebrated the life of a very special man respected and loved by all of us. "What made Allan special?" His honesty, integrity, passion and energy stand out. That of course is not forgetting that he was a gentleman and a great bloke with a vision for Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club and Sanctuary Lakes Resort. I have known Allan since day one of the Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club and over the years can't remember anyone as special as him. For me he was a mate and mentor. He had a vision that we not only have a great golf course but we have a great Golf Club. His energy and passion in achieving both was astounding. He did it because he loved the Golf Club and he saw the Club as an extension of where he had the pleasure of living. He was able to look out onto the second green from the living room of his home. Pennant golf was one of Allan's greatest passions and he saw it was a measure of the success of the Club. Allan led a small group of members who facilitated the introduction of Pennant golf to Sanctuary Lakes. My memory is playing at Chirnside Park in Division Six. Allan actively went out and encouraged players from country locations and surrounding areas to join our Club, until we had enough elite players to eventually move up through the divisions. Over the years many more very talented golfers have come to Sanctuary Lakes, which meant, not only a men's team but also a Colts team representing the Club. Many clubs measure their success by how successful the teams are. Division One is normally the domain of the very well known sand belt courses. Last year we had both our teams in Division One. This was Allan's vision and we did it. I walked Metropolitan golf course with Allan for the final round of the 2012 Pennant and he walked proudly even though he was not well.

Allan was instrumental also in introducing Sanctuary Lakes into the North West Pennant Division, the North West Veterans Pennant and Junior Pennant. He organised the Vets into working bees, fixing divots, repairing bunkers after heavy rain and trimming around sprinkler heads. He always led the way, working harder than all of us. Even when he became sick he still came out in his cart to organise us. One of the affects of the working bees was to bond the Vets so they are a very close and supportive group who put the Club first. Allan was not a one-vision person, which meant he also had a vision for the Club and the members. As Captain of the Club he had the respect of the membership and he respected all who were doing the right thing. Allan dealt with issues in a quiet respectful manner. He wanted the Club to be a place where members and guests could socialise as part of a "club". More than anything Allan wanted the Club to transition to the members and I am very happy that he lived to see it happen. In May the Sanctuary Lakes Presentation night was held and Allan was the honoured guest. He presented the Smith-Glasson Club Champion Trophy to Jordan Cooper. How fitting that one of the people he was instrumental in attracting to the Club is now the Club Champion. Allan made a speech and for me there were two stand out items. First he stated he would be back next year for the Presentation Night. He might not be there in person but I am certain his spirit will be in the room with his vision for the future. The second was "If you can do something for the Club, do it!" Allan's speech is in the attached link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ4LrcsPiqo&feature=youtu.beht Of course Allan was involved in more than just golf. He was on the Foundation Committee and was passionate about encouraging and helping young people, golf or otherwise to meet his or her potential. Stacey Keating being one example, he was very proud of Stacey's achievements. Allan we will never forget you, as your legacy will live on. become very worn if not managed correctly. The Course Superintendent normally runs the teeing area down one side progressively and then the other. This gives a bit of time for recovery to take place.

Frost on fairways When there is frost on the fairway the grass can be damaged when driven over by a cart. The Course Superintendent will normally wait for the sun to be up and then put the sprinklers on briefly to remove the frost from the grass. He has to be careful that he has enough warmth to do so as he does not want the water freezing again. Page 11 of the syllabus as below; 2.2 Control of Play (a) The use of and play on the Golf Course shall, always, be subject to the control of Golf Services Operations, their designated assistants and/or the Golf Captain. The Golf Course Superintendent, in consultation with Golf Services Operations and Sanctuary Lakes Club - General Manager, shall determine when wet weather or other conditions of play dictate the closing of the Golf Course or whether golf carts can be used.

Handicap Matchplay Paul Didham and Mark Curnow are to contest the final. 4BBB Matchplay The 4BBB Matchplay Championships is a knockout competition. Matches to be completed by a specific date, which will be on the draw. All matches will be played on a Handicap basis off the Matchplay index. (If there is an extenuating circumstance that causes you not to be able to play by the due date please inform management, the Professional or me). If you have not played or not informed one of us you may be disqualified. Congratulations to the June Monthly Medal winner Tony Glynn with a nett 71. Tony grew up in Tassie playing golf at the Burnie Golf Club. He enjoyed playing junior and colts pennant at the time. He had a break from Golf during most of his 20's and got back into it 3 years ago when he joined Sanctuary Lakes. His wife gave birth to their first child (Grace) 4 weeks ago. Allan Smith, Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club, First Captain, Honorary Life Member - Gentleman Golfer Last Friday there was a wonderful funeral held for Allan held at Sanctuary Lakes. I think we all gained a better understanding of what Allan did during his lifetime. Sanctuary Lakes Resort Services (Residents Association) donated a Captain's Bell to the Club as a memorial and in recognition of Allan. He was not only involved in golf but also the Residents Association and the Foundation. The day would not have been the success it was without the help and generosity of many. Pam would like me to thank a number of persons who helped and assisted. Ian Brown, Tony Ferreri, Graeme Glasson, Kerry Hansford, Kevin Halsted, Darrin Ramshaw, Jessica and many others for the organisation of a very well organised day. Pam particularly thanks Nick and Rob for supplying the Function Centre and food free of

charge.

You might be able to relate to some of these comments. 1. These greens are so fast I have to hold my putter over the ball and hit it with the shadow. Sam Snead 2. I was three over today: One over a house, one over a patio and one over a swimming pool. George Brett 3. Actually, the only time I ever took out a one-iron was to kill a tarantula. And I took a 7 to do that. Jim Murray 4. The only sure rule in golf is - he who has the fastest cart never has to play the bad lie.

Page 27: Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club Newsletter · 2013-07-09 · Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club Newsletter 7 June 2013 Transition News The newly appointed Directors of the Board of Sanctuary Lakes

Mickey Mantle 5. Sex and golf are the two things you can enjoy even if you're not good at them. Kevin Costner 6.I don't fear death, but I sure don't like those three-footers for par. Chi Chi Rodriguez 7. After all these years, it's still embarrassing for me to play on the American golf tour. Like the time I asked my caddie for a sand wedge and he came back ten minutes later with a ham on rye. 8. The ball retriever is not long enough to get my putter out of the tree. Brian Weis 9. Swing hard in case you hit it. Dan Marino 10. My favorite shots are the practice swing and the conceded putt. The rest can never be mastered. Lord Robertson 11. Give me golf clubs, fresh air and a beautiful partner, and you can keep the clubs and the fresh air. Jack Benny 12. There is no similarity between golf and putting; they are two different games, one played in the air, and the other on the ground. Ben Hogan 13. Professional golf is the only sport where, if you win 20% of the time, you're the best. Jack Nicklaus 14. The uglier a man's legs are, the better he plays golf. It's almost a law. H. G. Wells 15. I never pray on a golf course. Actually, the Lord answers my prayers everywhere except on the course. Billy Graham 16. If you watch a game, it's fun. If you play at it, it's recreation. If you work at it, it's golf. Bob Hope 17. If you think it's hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball. Jack Lemmon 18. You can make a lot of money in this game. Just ask my ex-wives. Both of them are so rich that neither of their husbands work. Lee Trevino 20. I'm not saying my golf game went bad, but if I grew tomatoes, they'd come up sliced. Lee Trevino

Brett Hawkey at the US Open Merion Golf Club 2013

Page 28: Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club Newsletter · 2013-07-09 · Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club Newsletter 7 June 2013 Transition News The newly appointed Directors of the Board of Sanctuary Lakes

Brett Hawkey, our Course Superintendent was one of three people from Australia invited to attend the US Open on the prestigious Merion Golf course to work as a volunteer and receive briefings on the running and preparation of the course for the tournament . Merion Golf Club has 2 golf courses, the East and West with the East hosting the tournament with a couple of back up holes being groomed on the West course in case of really inclement weather. The West course was also being utilised as a practice facility with the players being transported between the two. Merion has held the most USGA tournaments, 18 in total. It has unique wicker baskets instead of flags, it was designed by Hugh Wilson in 1912 and has about 900 members. It is rated no 7 in America and in the top 20 in the world. Brett reported A typical day was getting up at 2.30am having breakfast at 3.30am then jobs would start at around 4.30am and we would be all finished by 7.00am. Lunch was served at 10.00am with dinner at 4.30pm with the staff getting back into jobs at around 8pm with most nights finishing at 10pm. This meant there was more time for sleep during the day than at night. The bonus was we got to watch a lot of golf and with a section that was inaccessible to the public but open to those who had a inside ropes pass. "The whole experience was very satisfying and great to be a part of especially at such a prestigious golf course. You don't get the chance to get on those sorts of places all the time and it was something I will long remember." Brett Hawkey Below the crowd at the US Open.
