TRANSCRIPT
Dear Sandburg Families and Friends, We had a wonderful time welcoming many of our soon-to-be Sandburg families to our school, at our annual Kindergarten Round-up last week. Not only was it great to meet so many new Sandburgers, it was our starting point as we begin to plan for the next school year. I thank the PTA Hospitality Team for providing refreshments for the round-up. I also thank the PTA for hosting Trivia Night on Saturday night. It was an extremely enjoyable evening and served as one of the PTA fundraisers. I thank all of you for your support. When you support the Sandburg PTA, you’re helping all Sandburg students. This week is the first week of the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) assessments. PARCC is the new state assessment system that is replacing ISAT (Illinois Standards Achievement Test). All students in grades 3-5 will be assessed in Language Arts and Math. This week, our 3rd grade students will be tested in three (3) sessions of Language Arts and two (2) sessions of Math. Our 4th and 5th grade students will also participate in the same sessions during the week of March 16-20. There are three ways you can help your own children be as prepared as possible:
1. Make sure they get plenty of rest. 2. Provide a nutritious breakfast each morning. 3. Encourage them. There is no reason for any child to be anxious over these
tests. Please mark your calendar with a few upcoming events. Report cards will be sent home Friday, March 13. There will be a “meet and greet” with our Superintendent, Dr. Jeff Schuler, at the Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream on Monday, March 23, 6:00-7:00 PM. Spring Break is March 30-April 3. The Amazing Race Multicultural Night is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, 6:30-8:30 PM. The Sandburg Fine Arts Night/Ice Cream Social will be Tuesday, May 12, 6:00-8:00 PM. Our teachers and the PTA are also planning a Family Reading Night, but the date has not yet been set. Look for it soon. Thanks, as always, for all of your volunteer help, PTA participation and general support of our students. We are fortunate to be able to enjoy such a great partnership.
Sincerely, Aaron Bacon

5th Grade Drive for Change Information
Loose Change Drive: Change for Change 5th graders at Sandburg need your help to change the world. They have been learning about the needs of people in this world through an organization called Free the Children. They kicked off the Loose Change Drive last week to raise money for Free the Children organization. Free the Children is a non-for profit organization helping people in many countries such as; Rural China, Haiti and Kenya. The money we raise from the Loose Change Drive will go toward health care, clean water and efforts to stop Child Labor in the countries mentioned above. The grade level that collects the most money will earn a special game time with the 5th grade students during the recess and lunch time this spring. Thanks for helping the 5th graders with this cause to help people in our world. Food drive: We Act to Stop Hunger The 5th grade classes are asking Sandburg families to help us collect food to stop hunger in our community. We will be holding a food drive to help 3 different organizations in our area: The Humanitarian Service Project in Carol Stream, The Du Page Food Pantry in Wheaton, and the Outreach Center in Carol Stream. The food we collect will help feed local families. Please consider bringing nonperishable food items to Sandburg.
