Until now, for most analysts Prime Central London meant thehorseshoe-shaped area round Hyde Park from Mayfair toHolland Park. Now, however, all the evidence points toRegent’s Park being part of that elite location.

It is not just a matter of the landscape andarchitecture, though Regent’s Park is much finer than HydePark in every respect, but how the market operates.

The Prime Central London market has becomedetached from the rest of the UK market, floating more or less free. In the rest of the UK, prices are driftingremorselessly down. In Prime Central London, round bothHyde Park and Regent’s Park, prices are still on the up, albeitwithout the unsustainable rates seen in the runup to 2008.

The same forces are driving the markets round bothparks. Foreign investors regard London as a safe haven fortheir money, especially if they live in China where fears that

the property bubble there will soon burst, or if they live inone of the world’s less stable political regimes. Howevergloomily we in the UK regard current overall marketconditions, viewed from outside we are seen as a stable, wealthy and fundamentally sound market to be in.

British owner-occupiers have reemerged after therecession, keen to secure stylish, elegant and impressivehomes for entertaining both friends and business contacts. The grandeur and fame of Regent’s Park’s terraces make themideal for that purpose. And they are closer to the City andDocklands than South Kensington, too.

So we at Sandfords are quietly confident about theshort term future for the property market in Prime CentralLondon, and especially Regent’s Park. The long termprospects look positively bright.

If recent market trends prove anything, it is that Regent’s Parkis now firmly within the Prime Central London category.

A Tudor palace for modern living

6

Amid the classical magnificence and imperialscale of the Regent’s Park Terraces, St Katharine’sPrecinct is an oasis of calm, like a miniatureOxbridge college daydreaming by the park.

Right and opposite:St Katherine’s Precinct

The Gothic-style chapel and the houses on either side were built in 1826 to house St Katharine’s Hospital, one ofLondon’s oldest charities. It was founded 1148 by KingStephen’s Queen, Matilda of Boulogne, not as a medicalhospital as we know them today but to provide assistanceand spiritual care for the poor of east London, which wasalready an area of acute poverty – some things never change.

The Hospital buildings in the shadow of the Tower ofLondon consisted of a chapel and houses for the Master, three Brothers, three Sisters and six ‘poor assistants’.

The area round the Hospital was very grim. It was outsidethe limits of the old City of London, and almost outside thelaw. In Tudor times, the Master complained that part of theHospital grounds that had been leased to the Tower had“heretofore lain void and waste, and had been of no Profit toany; serving only for a Resort or Meeting Place of Rogues andWomen of ill Conversation.” He wanted to enclose it toprevent “Naughtiness and Pilferies”. By the 19th century, thewhole area had become a haven for crime and prostitution.

Simultaneously, the Port of London had outgrown thewharves that crowded along both banks of the Thames, sothe authorities planned to solve both problems at one blow

Page 9: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011

by demolishing the whole area and digging a new dock, St Katharine’s Dock, in its place. Unfortunately, this alsomeant the demolition of ancient Hospital.

The new site in Regent’s Park was provided incompensation. The new buildings were designed by AmbrosePoynter, a young pupil of the architect of Regent’s Park, JohnNash. Poynter considered that a medieval style ofarchitecture would be more appropriate for a medievalfoundation than Nash’s Greek classical style, and modelledthe design on Tudor masterpieces including Hampton CourtPalace and King’s College Cambridge.

At the centre is the chapel, with its traceried westwindow framed by tall corner turrets. On either side arehouses on the north for the Brothers and on the south forthe Sisters. The Master had a grander house in the Park itself, opposite the hospital, but it was bombed in World War 2.

In its new surroundings, St Katharine’s Hospital wasseparated from the poor it was supposed to benefit. Thepost of Master had always been a profitable sinecure – somuch so, the 18th century astronomer William Brounckerspent a lot of money on a protracted law suit to establish hisright to it. In its new location, the Hospital became a sort of

aristocratic rest home for the well-born but cash-strapped.In the First World War, the buildings were converted

into a real medical hospital for American officers, funded by the banker William Saloman. At the same time QueenAlexandra, who was from Denmark, gave the chapel to theDanish church in London.

The Danes brought in four large wooden figures fromtheir former church by the Danish-born London sculptor C.G. Cibber. They also installed a plaster copy of the famousrunestone in Jelling, Denmark, originally made for King HaraldBluetooth and covered in Christian imagery and Viking runes.

After the Second World War, St Katharines moved backto its roots in the East End, and operates today as aconference and retreat centre for the Church of England.

The houses were converted into modern family homes.Today they are among the most sought-after properties inthe Park, valued for their secluded atmosphere, spaciousinteriors and large gardens.

ZahaHadid

Architect of the moment

Time Magazine’s most influential Thinker of2010 and the first female recipient of thePritzker Architecture Prize, Zaha Hadid isundeniably the architect of the moment as wellas the world’s most famous female architect. The more so since being confirmed on 2ndOctober as having been awarded the highlycoveted 2010 RIBA Stirling Prize, Britain’s mostprestigious architectural award.

With a dip and a curve, a swoosh and aswerve, Zaha Hadid extends space. Herdeliciously delirious caverns and dangerouslycantilevered volumes never stop once they getgoing. They swell into concert halls, extend intoart galleries and leap from ubiquitousmountainsides. With commissions all over theglobe, this 58 year-old Iraqi-born Britisharchitect is reshaping our world with a bravuraall her own.

Indeed Hadid has been changing the way wesee our world for a while now. Raised inBaghdad and schooled in mathematics inBeirut, she eventually settled in London - a hotspot for avant-garde architecture in the 1970s -where she attended the city’s Architectural

Association. There shecaught

critics’ attention with her thesis design. Entitled“Malevich Tectonic”, it re-imagined the banks ofthe Thames as the site for a Russianrevolutionary explosion. She gained publicnotoriety for her Hong Kong Peak design of1981, in which she dissolved the mountains intohabitable shards. For years very little of herwork actually turned into buildings, but in thenew millennium we seem to be ready for hervision. Her science centre in Wolfsburg, herbridge in Zaragoza and her ski jump inInnsbruck have all now shown us that hervision can become a reality.

A big part of her recent success in actuallyrealising her seductive images is the fact thatthe computer now lets us build almost anythingwe can imagine. With the help of PatrikSchumacher, her long-time collaborator and amajor force in the theory as well as the practiceof computer-based design, Hadid is creatinglarger and ever more daring structures aroundthe world. Her award-winning MAXXI theNational Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome,a spiralling stack of light-

filled galleries, opened this May. HerGuangzhou Opera House, a bulging auditoriumthat looks like the physical translation of anopera singer’s voice, will open soon.

Hadid's signature style is also indisputable inthe exclusive private residence currently under

development in California, USA. Thepowerful dichotomy between

intimacy and exposure isevident in the

extreme.

The undulating forms of Hadid’s LondonAquatics Centre will greet visitors to the 2012Olympics. The architectural concept of theCentre is inspired by the fluctuating geometryof water in motion creating spaces and asurrounding environment in sympathy with theriver landscape of the Olympic Park. A billowingroof sweeps up from the ground as if a waveenclosing the pools of the Centre with itsunifying gesture of fluidity.

Hadid has always been a global leader inpioneering research and design investigation.Collaborations with artists, designers, engineers and clients such as BMW, Chaneland Swarovski have advanced her diversity andknowledge, whilst the implementation of state-

of-the-art technologies have aided therealisation of fluid, dynamic

and

therefore complex architectural structureswhich transform our vision of the future withnew spatial concepts and bold, visionary forms.

Her design alongside Schumacher for theSunrise Tower in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia mosteffectively engages with this city in multipleways. The design houses 5 differentprogrammatic components - residential, hotel, offices, retail and parking - all of which aredistributed through 66 floors in total.  Byexploring potential synergies at different levelsand anchoring itself to the existing urbanfabric, this stunning building creates a platformof services that engage with neighbouringdevelopments, sustaining critical mass and asense of community.

Perennially swathed in Issey Miyake or otherJapanese designer couture, wearing large andabstract jewellery, she has been known to

make grand and wittypronouncements to large

audiences whilst

texting from her mobile phone at the sametime. She is also, quite simply, both Anglo-Araband a woman. Hadid is the only notable Arab-born designer to have achieved success in theWest and the first independent female architectto do so who is not part of an husband-and-wifeteam.

She was the first woman and Arab-bornperson to win Architecture’s equivalent of theNobel Prize, the Pritzker Prize (2004).Singularly she is the first woman to win theRoyal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)Stirling Prize (2010), having been awarded theUK’s premier architectural accolade for herMAXXI the National Museum of XXI Century Artsin Rome.

that seemed to grow out of the soil and sand, influenced her work. “Baghdad, like all citiesthat are on the water, has timelessness, afluidity that also comes from being in the East.In that flatness, there are moments when youare there, or in Cairo, or Istanbul, when time isfrozen in moments, what you are seeing couldhave been there 5,000 years ago.

But what I also took away from Iraq was a belief in progress, innovation andmodernisation. I grew up with that. It had a bigimpact on me. There was a particular kind ofmodernist style there too, one filled with theplay of light and shadow, where inside andoutside mingled.”

Now Hadid is far away from Baghdad.Several hundred people work for her in herconverted school in Islington, although she stillteaches in Vienna and lectures around theworld: “I can do nearly as much as I want to.”Instead of just inspiring others, as her designshave done for several decades, she is doing itherself. “I have more work than ever,” shesighs, “but you never know whether a client isright or not; a situation is right or not. I’ve beenin the fridge so long I don’t want to say no; I amadjusting to doing commercial work, whichmeans I have to work differently, with different

employees. It has to be done well, not on thecheap, well-detailed and, with the way we work,we usually can’t use standard systems, but it isdoable.” However it seems as if buildings areno longer enough for Zaha Hadid. She hasalways designed furniture, condensing herforms into objects you can sit, or more aptly, lounge upon. Now she is designing completekitchens, tables and even cars - a streamlined,zero-emission city runabout with ergonomic, organic surfaces wrapping around either threeor four wheels. Her most remarkable foraysinto product design include a curving tap forAvilion, strap-on boots for Lacoste which unfurlaround the shins the way her buildings unfoldin space and most recently four collections ofwallcoverings for leading wallcovering innovator,Marburg Wallcoverings, as part of the exclusiveART BORDERS series. These collections defyconvention in their vivid amplified spatiality andfluidity energising the room to multiply, compress and add dimension. Dynamic linesand expressive organic shapes intensify depththrough the interplay of shimmering metalliceffects juxtaposed with matt and discreet areas. With these swooshes, Zaha Hadid is bringingbody and form together. It is an union that herorganic forms have always implied.

Extreme BentleyCreating the most powerful Bentley road car ever meant

pushing the boundaries of 21st century technology,

Steven Hall takes a drive...

Page 41: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011

I arrive at the stunning Bentley Kent showroomin Sevenoaks, Kent, not all of my days are likethis, having been given the keys by BrandManager Stephen Jackson my 'task' over theweekend is to test drive the all new BentleyContinental Supersports. This new edition islighter and much faster than other Bentleysand it runs on bio-fuel. Think of the BentleyContinental Supersports as a great engineeringresearch programme which thankfully came tofruition. That's because Bentley engineersspent their spare time tinkering with variousaspects of the GT Speed to see how far theycould push the performance envelope and wowdid they push it. The result is the fastest, mosthardcore Bentley that's ever been produced

with a top speed of 204mph. What it stands foris this. It is the fastest road-going Bentley ever, and the fastest Bentley full stop. ThisContinental Supersports weighs less than theregular GT Coupé or the slightly quicker Speedversion, so now it’s two and a quarter tonnesinstead of two and a half, and has yet morepower from its 6.0-litre, W12, twin-turboengine. This engine is effectively two narrow-angle V6s next to each other, sharing possiblythe most intricately machined crankshaft I haveseen.

Time to step inside and slip into the firm, enveloping leather bucket seats created byBugatti and hand-trimmed in the BentleyCrewe factory. The carbon fibre trim, console

Page 42: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011

and fascia are very much a radical departurefrom the use of wood and leather, giving an ‘ohso special’ look and feel. One touch of thestarter button and the beast is alive with an allpowerful thrum, the firmness of the suspensionnoted as soon as I pull away. There are four rideprogrammes - comfort, normal, sport one and

sport two. I soon discover that riding in anythingsofter than sport one is simply not needed, evenfor commuter levels of comfort. Body roll isnever an issue, cornering loads simply don'taffect you. The Bugatti bucket seats have thatsorted and you are nailed into the seat. Onesmall issue is making doubly sure that with

621bhp at your control you don't enter bendstoo quickly. However the carbon-ceramicbrakes are forgiving and give you a sportingchance!

As I leave Kent on my way to the WestCountry the power and speed is impressive tosay the least. The original Continental GT Coupe

Page 43: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011
Page 44: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011

was launched some eight years ago. This newversion however takes things to a whole newlevel. The thirteen percent power increase anddrop in weight of 110kg means the power toweight ratio increases from 238 to 271bhp pertonne, the 0 to 100mph now stands at just 8.9seconds, this really is supercar performance.Sitting on 20 inch alloys at 40mph plus the carglides and the real enjoyment begins.

As I make my way onto the M25 I think theBentley brief with the new ContinentalSupersports was simply 'faster than you wouldever want to go’. Trust me, Bentley's ChiefEngineer Dr Ulrich Eichhorn achieved his aim.Eichhom is the force behind Bentley's well-established policy of continuous

‘Unmatched in Value’

Page 46: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011

improvement and his passion for his cars issimply second to none. With all this 'speed' itshould not be lost that the new ContinentalSupersports is Bentley's version of an economycar. It has been painstakingly engineered toproduce its 621bhp whether burning E85 (15percent petrol, 85 percent ethanol) or purepump petrol or any combination of the two. Thismakes the engine management systemversatile enough to cope and is a moreimportant engineering achievement than isgenerally perceived. Bentley aim to have itsentire range with this capability by 2012, whichwill allow Bentley to claim that supercars cango green without being boring, slow or small.

Slow, boring or small? None of these wouldbe used to describe the Supersports, completewith an extra expanse of meshed grille, twononsense extractor grills on the top surface ofthe bonnet along with a complete lack of shinytrim. Instead smoked steel mouldings and a setof the most beautiful gleaming black alloys arethe order of the day. Wearing these the car'shuge but light carbon-ceramic brakes andsome special lightweight suspension partsremove some 20kg from the weight of thestandard Continental. Weight is also lost bylighter front seats and the removal of backseats (although a four-seater version is now anoption).

My dream has ended. After four hours ofdriving the fastest and most powerful Bentleyever built I arrive in the West Country just intime for dinner at the stunning new SouthSands Hotel in Salcombe. Whilst it may not be atop priority for every owner, the clear aim wasto create a top-end performance car that in theright hands could be a real match and more forthe Ferraris and Porsches.

Liquid Gold

Alison Jee takes a lookat one of France's best-known exports.Cognac. The very word embodies sophisticationand class. Thisancient drink should not beconfused with brandies from Spain, Cyprus orother countries and it should also not beconfused with its sister spirit Armagnac. TrueCognac is only from the Cognac region inFrance, an area stretching from La Rochelle inthe north east, down past Aubeterre in thesouth east. And right in the centre of theCognac region is an area known as GrandeChampagne, one of six areas (or ‘crus’)spanning a total of 13,000 hectares and theregion where some of the finest examples ofthis wonderful drink are produced.

The Cognac market tends to be dominated byfour large companies, who between themcontrol some 85 per cent of the market. Truecognac connoisseurs though, often delight inseeking out those cognacs prepared by thesmaller, independent houses.

In the heart of Grande Champagne is thetown of Segonzac, home since 1270 of CognacFrapin, one of the finest estates in the region. For 20 generations now, members of the Frapinfamily have cultivated their vines on the Châteaude Fontpinot estate and produced some of thebest Cognac money can buy.

46

Page 49: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011

Frapin is in the enviable position of owning all

its vineyards (300 hectares) in the ‘PremierGrand Cru’ (or first growth), GrandeChampagne region and it is the largest privatelyowned domaine. The temperate climate, thanksto its location halfway between the Atlantic andthe upper part of the Charente valley, where thesoil is particularly chalky, produces delicateCognac’s with a pronounced floral aroma.

Interestingly, the soil is almost identical tothat in Reims, home of Champagne, hence thename ‘Grande Champagne’.The secret is in the soil:The Frapin estates are an example of what isknown as ‘reasonable agriculture’. Thisphilosophy takes into account all theparameters currently known and mastered: thebiology of the vine and its parasites, theweather conditions and the soil. Frapin vinesare cultivated traditionally, respecting thenatural balance of the soil, and each yearrestoring natural elements such as the prunedbranches and residue of the grapes from thedistillation. Also, the soil is allowed to rest for aminimum of seven years before being replantedwith vines. This way, insects which feed off theroots of the wines can be totally eliminated and, with them the risk of a virus developing.

These fine Cognacs need up to 50 years in thebarrel to taste at their best. Cognac vines aretended differently from those used for wine: thevines are trained higher and are spaced outfurther. After the grapes are pressed, no acidityor sugar is added during the fermentationprocess. This results in a liquid which is perfectfor distillation.

The vines in Cognac today are mainly theUgni Blanc. Up until 1880’s when the dreadedphylloxera struck the region the Folle Blanchegrape predominated. Today, just a fraction ofthe original eau-de-vie made from the FolleBlanche grape remains and at Frapin it iscarefully stored and guarded, and usedsparingly!

In 1888 Pierre Frapin replaced his vineyards -which had been destroyed by phylloxera - withnew American rootstock. The following year hetook part in the World Fair in Paris, whereGustave Eiffel was building his famousstructure. Frapin was awarded a gold medal forhis Cognac and to celebrate this hecommissioned Eiffel to design a

commemorative cellar (or ‘chai’) which tothis day remains a local landmark.Well agedIt is the ageing process where themagic of Cognac comes into itsown. The cellars at Frapin are infact above ground, but of varyingheights, in order to control thetemperature and humidity. TheCognac matures in casks made ofLimousin oak, which gives theCognac its warm colours andreleases its tannins as it comesinto contact with the eau-de-vie. Frapin’s cellar masterOlivier Paultes is in charge ofwatching each barrel’s maturationcarefully. This involves moving themfrom one building to another, sometimes leaving them on theearth floor or another time movingthem to a higher floor where theair will be drier. The aroma of aCognac cellar is hard to describe, but it is an unforgettable one. Theevaporation of a little bit ofthe alcohol from thecognac barrels (the‘angel’s share’ as it isknown – up to 3 percent ayear) adds to the muskypungency – and not surprisinglythe aroma is at its mostpungent wherethe oldestcognacs areheld, in dark, cobwebbedcellars. How to tastecognac: Many peoplemistakenlybelieve that theolder a Cognac is,the darker it is. Notso, the colour is givenby the cask in which ithas matured. Howshould you tasteCognac?According to

Page 50: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011

Paultes, you shouldn’t swirl the glass first torelease the aroma, as you would do a glass ofwine. “You should move the volatile elementswhen you swirl, so sniff it first without movingthe glass,” he says. “At the correct temperaturea good Cognac will release a pleasing, immediate freshness and balanced fruitiness. And when aged in the barrel, Cognac acquiresan aromatic complexity, with spicy tones andvanilla notes. ”It is often drunk as an aperitif aswell as a digestif”. When you have the Cognacin your mouth, you shouldn’t suck in air as youwould with a wine, but do swirl it around yourmouth – this is important as it will establish its‘length’. The longer the taste remains in yourmouth, the better the Cognac,” he adds. Anunbalanced Cognac, or one which is too young, will be fiery without the softness and finishwhich comes with age.

And if you aren’t picking up all the aromas inyour Cognac, perhaps you are serving it in thewrong glass? Traditionalists still favour theballoon glass, but according to researchconducted recently by the Bureau NationalInterprofessionnel du Cognac (or BNIC as it isknown in the trade) top sommeliersrecommend the tulip shaped glass. Not onlywas this shape found to be the most attractive, easy to hold and easiest for admiring colour, importantly, thanks to its wide bowl and narrowneck, it concentrates the Cognac’s nose andallows the taster to appreciate properly thesubtlety and layers of aromatic complexity.

Try drinking Cognac from different glasses –the change it can make to the contents of thesame bottle can be quite remarkable. A classicchampagne flute is another excellent glassfrom which to enjoy Cognac – the concentrationseems to remove the fierceness of the alcoholand gives a delicious fruitiness. Be warnedthough, it is very easy to sip your way throughrather a lot when it tastes so wonderfullysmooth!

Cognac Frapin’s range starts at around £40 abottle with the VS, then moves up throughVSOP, Chateau Fontpinot, VIP XO and Extra. Itsaward-winning Le Multimillésime, is a blend ofthree superb vintages: 1982, 1983 and 1985,which has been exclusively harvested, distilledand aged at Chateau Fontpinot. The range alsoincludes rarer blends such as the Cuvée 1888,selected from the most precious stock, some of

which even predates1888, passed downthrough the generationsand a tribute to theextraordinaryachievements of PierreFrapin. This extremelyrare, limited editionCognac carries a highretail price though –Harrods sells it for£4,500 a bottle.

Just a few steps up from the sandy beach andperfectly situated to take advantage of one ofthe most magnificent coastal views in NorthCornwall is ‘The Sea House’, a privately ownedhome and winner of the prestigious South WestLocal Authority Building Control Awards (LABC)for Best Individual Dwelling. The ownerscommissioned The Bazeley Partnership, chartered architects, to interpret their visionand create a contemporary home worthy of thespecial cliff top location.

As you might expect a home of this statureand quality demands the very best lifestyleaccoutrements that money can buy. Thearchitect suggested that at the heart of thisluxury retreat there should be a glorious MarkWilkinson Kitchen and dining area flooded withnatural light, simply a joy to be in and awonderful place to prepare food, especially thatharvested from the natural resources of thenearby ocean.

Mark Wilkinson Furniture were

recommended by the architects to their clientas a company of international standing whocould meet the exacting design requirementsand build quality that the client’s brief for thekitchen installation demanded. The architectsand the Mark Wilkinson team worked closelytogether through the design development tosuccessfully integrate the new kitchen into thewhole scheme.

The quality and high specification set by thearchitects for all elements of the house couldonly be achieved through employing the very

best craftsmen and working with those whocould deliver the standards required. TheBazeley Partnership reported that MarkWilkinson Furniture not only met thesestandards but exceeded the expectations of theclient and architects, the combined effort ofwhich was recognised in the LABC Award forthe project.

The design, style chosen for the kitchen wasMark Wilkinson’s ‘New England ’which takes itsinspiration from coastal origins and embodies agreat sense of timelessness and the spirit ofplaces like Nantucket, Providence and othernaturally beautiful communities of America’sEastern Seaboard. Travelling this area is whatinfluenced Mark Wilkinson to create his own‘New England’ style. He recalls, “It was thecolonial era houses with their white-washedelevations, the spectacular landscape and theseafaring culture which becomes a veryseductive potion when mixed with fresh lobster, purity of air and the sound of waves breaking onthe shore. So I brought ’New England’ homeagain.”

Page 61: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011
Page 62: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011

Perhaps it is no accident that the AtlanticOcean washes the shoreline of both NewEngland and North Cornwall bringing togetheran ebb and flow of cultural ideas and sharedspirituality. The inspirational look and feel ofthe kitchen design is further enhanced by thesumptuous blue-grey work surfaces in granitecalled ’Blue Eyes’. The choice of appliancesprovides maximum efficiency for easy holiday-style cooking and eating whether dining indoors

or ‘al fresco’ on one of the balconies or on thepatio. The iconic Aga, Amana fridge/freezer,Miele dishwasher, microwave and wine storage, sinks by The Kitchen Sink Company, taps byPerrin and Rowe and extraction by Neff, allperform together like a well rehearsedorchestra giving maximum time to enjoy themusic of the waves, the luxurious facilities ofthe house or relax in the Cornish sunshine.

This award winning luxurious five bedroom

home was completed in February 2010. Theaccommodation also includes a games room, apool room and a garden room. The success ofthe project was largely due to the shared visionof excellence by the owners, their architects -The Bazeley Partnership, the buildingcontractors Ryearch and Mark WilkinsonFurniture.www.mwf.com

why polo insiderslove theVeuve Clicquot Gold Cup

Antje Derks, Polo Correspondent, The Times

F or those who have never seen the sportof polo, the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup forThe British Open Championship carries

the cachet of golf’s British Open, orWimbledon’s tennis fortnight in both itssignificance, and for the way it is revered withinpolo circles.

It remains the pinnacle of the English high-goal polo season for players, patrons andspectators alike.

Indeed, since its inception over half a centuryago, in 1956, it has become the most importantpro-am polo tournament played outsideArgentina, and the most coveted trophy in thesport.

Its home is Cowdray Park Polo Club, whereannually, nearing 40 matches are played over athree-week period. Set in an 'Area ofOutstanding Natural Beauty' within ViscountCowdray’s 16,500 acre estate in Midhurst, West

Sussex, many of the matches take place againstthe backdrop of the South Downs, in front of theworld famous Cowdray ruins.

For many, it has become a permanent fixturein the summer social and sporting diary as partof the old-fashioned “season”, along withHenley Regatta, Cowes week, Wimbledon andthe Test match at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

It has an ambience where Pimms, picnicsand Princes blend seamlessly in the throng. Notto forget, of course, the ubiquitous popping ofcorks from title sponsors Champagne HouseVeuve Clicquot, who have supported thechampionship for the past decade and a half.

Cowdray Park is recognised worldwide as thehome of British polo and, indeed, Cowdray ParkPolo Club celebrated its Centenary year in 2010and is looking forward to a very bright futurewith a growing youth membership.

The first competitive tournaments were

recorded on the House grounds in 1910, andcontinued to develop and gain popularity untilthe event of the Second World War, which sawthe sport all but die out, due to the disbandingof several Cavalry regiments, withmechanisation superceding the role of theCavalry in the British Army.

Indeed, Cowdray Park’s role in the re-establishment of polo in England following thewar can never be underestimated. The sport’srevival was largely due to a legend within polo:John Churchill Pearson, 3rd Viscount Cowdray, who passed away in 1995, in his eighties.

Having lost an arm in Dunkirk during WW II,the 3rd Viscount Cowdray continued playing thesport and even umpired into his Seventies usinga prosthetic arm designed and fashioned by hisgunmakers, Churchills, which was fitted bymedical experts at the renowned limb hospitalat Roehampton.

past 14 years, but despite being in the final twicethis particular prize has eluded me!”

The love of the event has indeed passeddown from father to son. HRH Harry Wales hasalso played at Cowdray within a Gold Cuptournament.

In other words, regardless of who you are, itfeels as if you are family at Cowdray Park. Thereis a special atmosphere of warmth at the clubfelt by both those inside the sport, and oftenremarked on by neophytes to both playing andspectating.

The Gold Cup tournament is played over athree-week period annually in July, culminatingin the final, which attracts hardened poloaddicts and polo first-timers alike, from allcorners of the world, to witness two teams who

have battled their way to the winners’ podiumlifting the splendid golden trophy.

While a high goal event today, it began withhumbler origins. A little over fifty years ago, anArgentine farmer called Antonio Heguy cameover to England on holiday with three of hisfriends. Lord Cowdray had invited them to playin his new tournament.

They arrived with a boat-load of home bredhorses – in stark contrast to today’s multi-million pound high-goal team operations. Backthen the Heguy team, Los Indios, beat the homeside nine goals to four to become the firstwinners of the Gold Cup.

No one could have predicted then just howprestigious the Gold Cup tournament wouldlater become.

The founding father turned Cowdray Parkinto one of the most famous polo clubs in theworld. Underpinning its development was thefact that he wanted people to come and playthere and feel welcome. He charged paltryentrance fees, gathered up his friends from hiswar years, imported ponies from Argentina andthen lent the ponies to his friends for free toform teams. Earl Mountbatten even had a teamthere in the Fifties.

The warmth he generated then is still at thevery heart of the club today, and is palpable asyou walk in through the entrance gates.

HRH The Prince of Wales, referring to the GoldCup for the British Open at Cowdray Park in Poloat Cowdray*, said “…its final is today the highlightof the polo year. I have been trying to win it for the

Tournament entrants are put into leaguesfollowing an open draw from a Veuve Clicquotice bucket, and a palpable frisson is always feltaround the room as teams see who they willface in the opening round. These days, mobilephone cameras record the draw immediatelyand are sent to Argentina. News of the draw isinstant, and in polo, makes world news.

The top eight teams progress through to thequarter finals, and the semi-finals of the GoldCup are played on the Thursday before theSunday final. Aficionados believe – withoutquestion – that this is the best day’s polo inEurope, attracting a large crowd. It is not a day ofpomp and ceremony. It is laidback and relaxedoff the field, often with nail-biting tension on it.

Semi-finals day attracts like-minded poloaddicts. It is regarded as the afternoon onwhich most polo insiders gather to discuss theissues of the English high-goal season.

The list of competitors who have taken partin the Gold Cup reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ fromthe worlds of business and aristocracy, as wellas attracting some of the greatest polo playingdynasties from South America.

daughter in law Lila Pearson, who reachedthe semi-finals with her team several yearsago, and, in 2009, brought Cowdray Vikings tothe event. Lila is also keen for a Cowdrayteam to feature in the Gold Cup in this, theclub’s centenary year.

The business magnate, the late KerryPacker, and subsequently his son JamiePacker, who did so much to raise the stakeswith their Ellerston Team, setting thebenchmark for professionalism within thesport, and the breeding of ponies, havebecome a fixture as have other leading lightsfrom business around the world.

England internationals Mark and LukeTomlinson have played for the Apes Hill ClubBarbados in the Gold Cup in recent seasons, and won it in 2003 with Nina Vestey.

“To take part in that means you are takingpart in something big, increasing yourdetermination to win,” said Mark. “Playing atthe British Open is always special, it’s themost important tournament in the UK. In fact, besides the Argentine Open, it's probably themost important tournament in the world.”

The Heguy family continues to be aformidable force on the polo field, along withthe Novillo Astradas, the Pieres and theMacDonagh families.

The current world number one, ArgentineAdolfo Cambiaso, with his swarthy looks, brooding demeanour, and brilliance on thepitch, first entered the Gold Cup scene in 1990,as a 16-year-old, 7-goal player, playingalongside the legendary Carlos Gracida, tentimes on a Gold Cup winning team, and one ofthe most elegant players ever to grace thegame. Gracida was in the Tramontana team, who still hold the record for winning the GoldCup four times in the Eighties.

English competitors have included theVestey family, with most recently Nina (nowClarkin) the first and only female to win theGold Cup, with Hildon in 2003; Lord Waterford’sfamily, including Lord Charles and Lord PatrickBeresford, and of course Prince Philip andHRH, The Prince of Wales, who were regularGold Cup competitors.

Continuing to carry the flag for theCowdray family, has been John Cowdray’s

Indeed, visitor numbers have risen in the last tenor so years from around five thousand to in excessof fifteen thousand . It is a scene that is typicallyEnglish but international at the same time.

A hint of wellies and waxed jackets, in case ofrain, mixed with designer elegance and highheels gives the Gold Cup an indefinable chic thatcould mean you were in Palermo, Deauville oreven Palm Beach. Yet the cricket square andcastle ruins next to the polo grounds mark it outas quintessentially English.

The Gold Cup is as much about the beautifultented shopping village, with its ninety boutiquesselling high-end clothes, jewellery and even up-market adventure holidays, as it is about thepolo match.

Since 1995, leading Champagne maisonVeuve Clicquot has been the title sponsor of thisprestigious polo event. The colours of theCowdray Estate and of the champagne brandinghave created a synergy that has ensured instantbrand recognition.

Put the 2011 Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup final –perhaps even the semi-finals – in your diaryand head to Midhurst for what promises to be aspecial season of bubble, sparkle andpulsating polo.

Roots that run deep. In anticipation of the Spring launch of his first book,Garden, acclaimed landscape garden designer RandleSiddeley reflects on a lifetime in the garden design business.

68

Page 71: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011

The roots of Randle Siddeley’s passion forgardens certainly run deep. From earlychildhood experiences of the great outdoors, toteenage years spent shadowing his father, renowned interior designer John Siddeley, anunerring enthusiasm for design andhorticulture was cultivated during Randle’sseemingly industrious youth. Now anacclaimed landscape garden designer with 35years’ experience under his belt, Randle, whose official title is The Lord Kenilworth, haswritten his first book, Garden. It not onlycelebrates a successful career in landscapegarden design, but also gives an intimateinsight into the milestones of a lifelong passion.

As a boy growing up in Suffolk, surroundedby Constable’s rural landscape, Randle wastrusted with his own garden plots to tend in thegrounds of the family homes - Old Oak Cottage, and later, The Deans. He delighted in watchingseeds that he had planted transform intoflowers, and it was in these early days that, inhis own words, he “realised that a gardenallowed you to escape and to create your ownworld.” Much knowledge was gleaned from thegardener, Mr Buckledy, who Randleinterrogated persistently about his gardeningpractices, apparently much to the amusement(and patience) of this old gardening hand. In histeenage years, jobs at Crampthorne’s nursery, and the Chelsea florists Pulbrook & Gould, honed Randle’s enthusiasm, skills andunderstanding of plant life. However, it was hiswork as a young man alongside his fatherwhich brought about an interest in the synergybetween inside and outside space, and whichproved to be the springboard for his career inlandscape design.

Under his father’s expert guidance, Randlelearnt the importance of understanding themechanics of design, something reflected inthe attention to detail applied to his projectstoday. As explained in Garden “He [JohnSiddeley] believed, rightly, that a good designershould understand the construction of a houseand everything that went on behind its walls.….The same thing applies to landscape design. Itis not enough to select plants or choose theright colour of stone. You have to understandaspect, light, climate, soil, water tables andwind direction. You have to be able to lookbeyond what is there and see how something

Page 72: Sandfords Regents Park | Summer 2011

radically different might work. You have to feela sympathy with the setting of the house andgarden, with the architecture and age of thebuilding, with the people whose garden this is.And then you have to work within constraints ofbudget and time to achieve a magical result.”

These are the challenges of garden designthat Randle took on board when he set up hislandscaping business in 1975. Today, his twincompanies, Siddeley Landscape Designs andRandle Siddeley Associates are well regardedglobally for their commitment to excellenceand bespoke design. From private residentialgardens in town and country, to largecommercial schemes in the UK and overseas,Randle and his team apply visionaryimagination, understanding and technical skillto each and every project.

In what has become a huge growth industryduring the past few decades, the award-winning team has embraced changing workingpractices, concerns and emerging trends, including sustainability. Randle wasinstrumental in pioneering the concept ofdesign-and-build, strongly believing thatlandscape design should encompass everystage of a garden’s creation - from concept toinstallation, and even maintenance. Today, wellthought out, attractive outside space isrecognised as being as important as theinterior design of a home in terms of value, appeal and longevity.

Unlike interior design, the organic nature ofa garden presents the difficulty of creatingsomething that continuously evolves. InGarden, Randle demonstrates varied solutionsto this challenge, and the specific challenges ofeach particular project, handpicked from hisextensive portfolio of work. “The book consistsof a fantastic cross section of projects, “Randleexplains. “There is everything from traditionalEnglish country estates, through tocontemporary urban spaces. It also illustratesthe extent of our international projects - inNorth America, the Mediterranean and theMiddle East. Each project is extremely specialin its own way and I like to think every one istotally unique because of our commitment toworking closely with the client to ensure theirpersonal style is reflected in their garden.”

Indeed, what unites the 26 case studiesincluded in the book is a desire to make

gardens that suit both the landscape thatsurrounds them and the people who use them.Randle shows how achieving a strong coredesign is essential in order to then make validand effective choices of materials, plants, trees, furniture, lighting and artworks. Thebook also includes additional advice for thosewishing to design their own spectaculargarden. Randle recognises that gardens are formany people a chance to engage with natureand create an outdoor space that is both

pleasing and personal. In the touching heartfelt opening

introduction to Garden, Randle concludes,“Since boyhood, I have seen the happiness thatgardens give, a reward for all the patience andhard labour they entail. I think their enduringpopularity is to do with what I first discoveredat Old Oak Cottage - that sense of creating yourown private world. For anyone who desires todo that for themselves, I hope this book will beboth a guide and a friend.“
