Sandos Hotels & Resorts, with two resort complexes on the RivieraMaya, Mexico, has launched an exclusive Extra Night promotionfor travel agents that includes free night(s) and special all-inclusiverates starting at $45 per person per night for travel throughNovember 15, 2010.

Agents who stay at the resort for four nights will pay for only three,while those interested in longer vacations can stay for five nightsand pay for four or book six or seven nights and pay for five.

Agents can head to environmentally-friendly Sandos Caracol EcoResort & Spa, through November 15 to enjoy a rate of $45 per per-son per night, or to the sprawling beachfront Sandos PlayacarBeach Resort & Spa through October 31 to enjoy a rate of $50 perperson per night. The Extra Night promotion is based on one travelagent per room. Rates quoted are ppdo per night in select room cat-egories and must be paid directly to the resort upon arrival. USA TODAY NAMES ISLA MUJERES A BESTPLACE TO SWIM WITH SHARKS

Isla Mujeres, a Caribbean island off the coast of Cancun, was re-cently recognized by USA Today for being one of its “10 greatplaces to swim with sharks.” From June to September the waterssurrounding Isla Mujeres are home to some 1,400 migrating whalesharks, the largest fish in the sea. Their largest concentrations arereported in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, primarily in thenortheastern corner of the Yucatan Peninsula.

It’s not rare to see over 50 whale sharks congregated in IslaMujeres’ waters searching for plankton. The slow-moving anddocile whale shark is not carnivorous, but actually prefers eatingmacro-algae, plankton, krill, and small squids. This unique charac-teristic is one of the many reasons why swimming with whale sharksis both a thrilling and completely safe experience.

A short ferry ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres has capitalized onits whale shark fame and offers hundreds of guided tours allowingvisitors to get up close with the mammoth fish.

Ceviche Tours tours cost of 125 per person. Private tours are alsoavailable for a maximum of 10 guests at $1,100. Prices includesnacks, refreshments and snorkeling equipment, as snorkeling isthe preferred method of interacting with whale sharks. Tours usu-ally leave at 8 a.m. from a local dock, and return at 2 p.m.

Another tour provider is Searious Diving, which offers tours for$125 per person or $1,250 for a private tour for up to eight pas-sengers. Departing between 7 and 9 a.m. (depending on the habitsof the sharks), the Searious Diving tours last up to two hours andcover a seven-mile-wide circle. While onboard, passengers are of-fered snacks and beverages. Tour cost includes life jackets andsnorkel gear.

For $125 per person, Aqua Adventures’ tours leave between 7and 7:30 a.m. and return 1–2 p.m. The large and comfortableboats fit up to 10, and are navigated by an experienced captain andcrew. Snorkel equipment is included in the price, and travelers areallowed to snorkel on the reef outside of Isla Contoy. MEXICO SEES IMPRESSIVE 27.5% INCREASEIN INTERNATIONAL AIR TRAVELERS IN JULY

In July of this year, according to Mexico’s Secretariat of Tourism,the number of international tourists arriving in Mexico by air in-creased 27.5 percent over July last year, with its airports receiving899,172 foreign visitors, up 193,899 passengers. According to theNational Institute of Migration, the United States was the mainmarket source for Mexican travelers, seeing 583,732 Americansarriving, an impressive 20.1-percent increase compared to 2009.Mexico also saw an increase in Canadian arrivals—57,587 visitedMexico in July, an increase of 22,864 passengers.

Spain came in at number three with 35,893 Spanish visitors inJuly, a 57.8-percent increase over 2009. France registered an in-crease of 39.4 percent, with 17,564 arriving in July 2010, com-pared to the 12,597 in 2009.

When it comes to Latin America, Argentina is the country withthe most air travelers visiting Mexico: 16,235 represented a 48.3-percent increase for July alone. Between January and July, morethan 108,000 Argentinean travelers visited Mexico, a 51-percentincrease over 2009. Brazil is the Latin American country with thesecond greatest number of air travelers, with 13,546 arriving inJuly of this year, a 173-percent increase over July 2009. Over68,000 Brazilians traveled to Mexico this January–July, 106.5percent over the same period in 2009.

From January to July of this year, more than 6 million touriststraveled into Mexico via air, an impressive 19.8-percent increaseover the same period in 2009. Nearly four million came from theU.S. alone—16.9 percent over 2009, and almost a millionCanadian tourists came to Mexico between January and July thisyear, a 20.2-percent increase from 2009.

Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara Manzo reported thatMexico’s federal government has invested over $3 billion in newtourism projects, generating 12,000 new jobs in the tourism sec-tor. Furthermore, she reported that from January to June 2010,$1.833 billion dollars were attributed to private sector investment,of which 88.4 percent were from domestic investors and 11.6 per-cent from foreign investors.
