ACQUISITION OF BORG GAF Corporation has withdrawn from the fight with Merrill

WARNER Lynch to purchase Borg Warner.

SANDOZ ACQUISITIONS Sandoz of Switzerland has acquired Mercury Plastics and its subsidiary Foscolor. Mercury Plastics, who produce masterbatches, purchased Foscolor at the beginning of the year. Sandoz has identified the masterbatch sector as "a priority activity." The company acquired SARMA a leading Italian masterbatch supplier, ,and Sandoz masterbatch production units now operate in 10 countries.

GUIDE TO MINERAL PRODUCTS

Engelhard Corporation has issued a new guide which describes its line of speciality kaolin and attapulgite-based products. Satintone calcined aluminium silicates for plastics and rubbers are also described. The guide is referenced EC2817.

U.K. AGENCY FOR BIOCIDES

Akzo Chemie UK has appointed Fermacol as UK selling agent for two of its specialised quarternaries, designated ARQUAD 2/10-50%. Both are dimethyl dialkyl quarternaries and function as effective biocides in a number of applications.

AKZO PLASTICS Akzo Plastics is now able to offer the products and knowhow of U.S. company Wilson-Fiberfil International to customers outside the U.S. and Canada. Akzo Plastics purchased Wilson-Fiberfil in 1986 and the company has extended its production facilities with a plant in Belgium to service the European sector. A Swedish office has also been opened. Akzo is able to supply customised materials with a complete and balanced property range using the acquired compounding technology.

REED PLASTICS CORPORATION

A profile of this compounding company is given in the March/April 1987 issue of Plastics Compounding. Reed Plastics supplies colour

and additive concentrates and was formed in 1948. The company now employs over 200 at its two manufacturing facilities. Reed say that the colour concentrate industry is particularly affected by the growing demand for colour quality and consistency. On the other hand, say Reed, the competitive nature of the business often demands that colour be supplied at very short notice to the processor and sometimes only in one-time small quantity lots. The solution is to utilise analytical instrumentation as well as established techniques. The company has steadily increased its involvement in the automative, building, and furniture industries, and this has led to an increased need for more through UV testing.
