Orchid Show Preparation The Sandpiper Orchid Society held its March meeting one

week early, at Waldor Orchids, in preparation for the upcoming Longwood Gardens Show which took place March 27th through March 29th. Walter Off, of Waldor Orchids, demonstrated the proper method of tying up and staking plants, to

make them show ready and then members starting the grooming process of preparing the orchids for the upcoming SEPOS Show. Walt and Dr. Cary Stone privileged us with their commentary on the Show Table

orchid plants brought in by the Sandpiper members. They pointed out the weaknesses and strengths of the plants being awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd place and honorable mention and then encouraged the members to place these

plants in the Longwood Gardens Show. There was a question and answer session to wrap things up. Walt’s workshop was of equal interest to newer and more experienced members alike.

Truly an amazing species discovered in Sumatra in 1993. A nigro-hirsute variety, with black hairs covering the canes. Large cream flowers heavily overlaid in bright green. The keeled tongue like lip is colored in strong red markings. This species is fragrant but most likely at a certain time of day after the flowers have been open a week or so. Easy to grow producing flowers several times per year on the sides and tips of the canes. Light Medium, from 1000 to 2,500 foot candles. East south or west windows are ideal. This plant will also perform well under artificial light culture.Temperature Intermediate to warm with Winter day temps being 70 or above and nights being 58 to 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer temps can be 10 to 20 degrees warmer.Humidity This plant likes a relative humidity of 50 percent or higher. The use of humidity trays or room humidifiers is beneficial. Water Water with rain, distilled or reverse osmosis water for best results. Municipal or well water that has a PH of 7.5 or lower is also acceptable. Water as the mix approaches dryness during flowering and subsequent growth. During the winter months from Late November to mid January allow the mix to become somewhat drier between watering. Resume watering at normal intervals once you have reached mid January or

when you see buds forming on the plant. Fertilizer Use Green Jungle Orchid Food, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green Jungle every time you water if plants are planted in bark. Be sure to flush the mix with clear water only once per month to prevent fertilizer salt build up. For plants in moss or mounted on slabs, feed every third or 4th watering as the moss holds a lot of nutrients. Flowering This plant can flower at different times of year but appears to be heaviest in the spring months. The flowers

can be 2 and a half to 3 inches in size and on larger plants the flowers can approach 4 inches. The flowers are fragrant and can last for 2-3 months. This species will prove very useful in hybridization providing interesting color, shape and substance to new crosses. The plants themselves are not large and can begin flowering at just a few inches in height making this a good plant for those with limited space.Repotting Repot in fall or spring using New Zealand sphagnum moss for best results. Repot on an annual basis.

Dendrobium tobaense

An Event Not To Be Missed! I would like to encourage all Sandpiper Members to attend this year's DVOC Speakers Forum. It is always a great learning experience and this year there are three outstanding speakers. Jim Rose from Cal-Orchids in Santa Barbara, CA will be speaking on a really fascinating genus ‘Lycastes'.  He does a great job of growing them and he will be bringing some real beauties for sale. Michael Sinn from Canaima Orchids will be lecturing on ‘Venezuelan Cattleya Orchids In Their Habitat’.  I always enjoy seeing orchids growing in their native natural environment. And don't forget the great buffet lunch!  It is always the highlight of the day and worth the price of admission. After lunch will be our keynote speaker, Bill Thoms.  He spoke last January at the World Orchid Conference and nearly everyone agreed that it was one of the best lectures that they had ever attended.  Bill's talk will be entitled ‘Growing Award-Winning Bulbophyllums'. He and his wife, Doris Dukes, have won over 150 cultural awards from the AOS judges over the years! I sincerely hope that every Sandpiper Member is able to make it this year to the DVOC Speakers Forum as it is going to be a fantastic day.
