The magazine Sang Bleu was a typographical project from the beginning. And who is interested in typography? Everyone! Typography today is a buzz, an urban legend: everyone knows something about it. Close attention, good luck and that unaccount-able affinity for ‘vielle France’ led B+P to rediscover several forgotten chapters of French modernism while working on the magazine: the most exclusive French his-torical font, the ‘Romain du Roi’, had been copyleft and all you had to do was have an accurate look at it; while Adrian Frutiger’s typographical diagram, Claude Lévi-Strauss’ structuralism, Darmstadt School’s serialism were just around the corner.

For several years now, the B+P agenda has embraced French typography. For the SangBleu typeface, the foundry pushed two key milestones of French modernism to the limit. First of all, SangBleu offers an extension of Adrian Frutiger’s diagram, planned but not realised in the 1950s: an ultra-condensed extra-thin lineal form. Secondly, it realises an extra-thin linear version of Romain (BP’s interpretation of the eighteenth-century Romain du Roi): a sort of epigraphical skeleton stressing the basic structure of the font, which potentially leads to a new lineal. A cluttered, enclosed, completed field? Not at all: this design could fit among the British sans-serifs or the American “gothics” and would stand out against humanist sans-serifs and grotesques. A conservative delusion or an offbeat modernity, call it what you will. As B+P knows better than anyone: typography has its own agenda.
