Santa BarbaraHumane Society2014 ANNUAL REPORT

The Santa Barbara Humane Society

The Santa Barbara Humane Society just completed its 127th year of service to the people and animal population of Santa Barbara City and County. The founding of the Santa Barbara Humane Society in 1887 makes it one of the three oldest agencies in the state dedicated to animal welfare. The Society occupies a five-acre site midway between Santa Barbara and Goleta, serving both com-munities with a shelter, animal adoption services, spay/neuter clinic, humane education center, boarding kennels, large animal holding center and corral, as well as humane investigation and animal rescue services.Approximately 5,000 members help to support the work that we do. The donations we receive from memberships, together with gifts and bequests, sustain our continuing programs. The Board of Directors and the Staff look forward to the next year of caring for animals, providing homes for pets and being environmental partners with all creatures.

Message from the Leadership

1

James W. Hammock, President

In 1887, key members of our community founded the Santa Barbara Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to serve as advocates of those unable to speak for themselves. They resolved to ensure a safe, compassionate environment for the most vulnerable creatures in their midst.

Today, these same principles are the foundation of all the work we do.

Thanks to caring people like you, our Members, our doors are open to all owner-relinquished animals – the old, sick, injured, abused, as well younger, healthier animals that can easily find new homes. We are their voice, defender, champion, and temporary sanctuary.

Underlying everything we do is our commitment to achieving the quality care of all healthy, adoptable animals – an ambitious goal for an open-door policy.

We continuously strive to improve our services and are committed to being a leader in animal welfare. The Santa Barbara Humane Society is fortunate to have gifted and passionate staff and selfless volunteers. Our high adoption rate is re-flective of that extra comfort and care given by these individuals.

Your financial commitment through your donations ensures that in the years to come we will remain able to provide affordable services and adoptions to the community we serve.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Santa Barbara Humane Soci-ety, we thank you for your continued support and interest in our programs. We all work towards one united goal; to make good things happen for the animals in our care every day.

Thank you for being a part of our mission.

Peggy Langle, Executive Director

HUMANE EDUCATION

2

One of our ongoing goals here at the Santa Barbara Humane Society is to foster a life-long dedication to the kind and responsible treatment of animals through our Humane Education program. Since 1949, the Santa Barbara Humane Society has traveled to schools from Lompoc to Carpinteria to give a variety of classroom presentations about animals, designed to meet state-mandated curriculum for Humane Education. We also conduct on-site tours, run our annual Critter Camp, and participate in regular community outreach.

Classroom Presentations

Our classroom presentations include topics such as basic pet care, interpreting dogs’ body language, pet safety, urban wildlife (or how to be kind to wild animals), endangered spe-cies, pet overpopulation, animal neglect and abuse, and the importance of spaying and neutering. We always bring the education dog to teach the students how to safely approach and pet a new dog. During the 2013/2014 school year, we visited 304 classrooms and reached 6,305 students.

Onsite and Offsite Educational Opportunities

We welcome after-school groups, elementary school classes, scouting groups, and adult clubs and organizations to tour our shelter. This gives us a chance to show off our beautiful five-acre property, including our low cost clinic, our lov-able adoption animals, and our boarding facili-ties. We also give a tailored presentation to each group about the Santa Barbara Humane Society and our mission.

Critter Camp

Each summer, we offer a weeklong morning camp for children aged nine to elev-en in our community. They are able to do animal themed crafts and games, learn about a different type of animal every day, and meet our adoptable dogs and cats. In 2014 we had three presentations – Eyes in the Sky brought several raptors to teach the campers about birds of prey, WILDES brought an opossum and shared valuable information about the wildlife in our own backyards, and K9s Behave brought some dogs to help clicker train the kids (and vice versa!). The camp was a success and we look forward to continuing the tradition in years to come!

Santa Barbara Humane Society continues to be a key player in the arena of animal rescue through the County’s Office of Emergency Management (County OEM). Our continuous training maintains the competency of our animal Rescue Team members as is documented throughout the year by County OEM assigned mission numbers.

tim Collins, our technical Animal rescue specialist, taught weekly hands-on training and these special workshops throughout 2014:

In March, volunteers and staff had the opportu-nity to maneuver horse trailers on and around Hearts Adaptive Riding Program’s facility on Calle Real. Trainings like this help our animal rescue team maintain skills in the art and sci-ence of handling horses and trailers in stressful situations. Obstacle courses, complete with dif-ferent scenarios of parking a trailer in reverse, “S” curves, and backing in a tight circle, kept the day active!

In June, our animal rescue team attended a hands-on workshop with mares and babies at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez. The goal of the training was to learn how to interpret the mare’s motions, looks and possible sounds while we handled their babies. We also learned the latest and best ways to make contact with a foal and constrain it to limit stress for the animal and any danger to ourselves. Many thanks to Magali Farms for allowing us to hold this workshop and work with their horses.

In August we were able to use the abandoned bridge at the “San Lucas Ranch” through the generosity of the property owners. During this workshop, we set up for a high-angle res-cue, using fifty-five gallon drums of water to simulate the actual weight of a large animal. We were able to lift the simulated animal from the river bed and ensure that our technical equipment could handle the stress and angles of the load. This allowed us to learn about limitations, cautions, and reinforcements needed to ensure a safe high-angle large animal rescue. We appreciate the use of the San Lucas Ranch property for a very exciting in-field training session! In October, at low tide and at nighttime at Shoreline Park Bluff, we held a rappelling training for our more advanced rappelling team. Night-time rappelling sessions are truly challenging, but keep us prepared throughout the year as some of the rescues that we are called to respond to may go into night-time hours. Lighting can be limited and the key is communication and personal safety when visibilty is low. Teamwork is crucial in making a rescue successful in the dark hours of the night!

In December we partnered with Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue in a joint basic

rappelling training at the Search and Rescue Rappel Tower in Lompoc. This type of basic training is a pre-requisite for high-angle technical rescue trainings and real-life rescues. In October the Humane Society sent staff member Michael Lovato to Nevada for a week long technical rescue class in “Rope Tech Rescue I & II” offered by CMC Rescue, Inc.

We wish to recognize and thank CmC rescue, inc., russ Jones metal Works, valley Precision Products, all located in Goleta, for their generous donations of numerous pieces of rescue equipment and services for the development of technical rescue equipment to be used in our emergency response program. With the help of our volunteers, we re-main ready, trained, and outfitted with the proper rescue and evacuation equipment to meet the next challenge.

As a result of trainings such as these, the Santa Barbara Humane Society was able to play a major role in two technical rescues that occurred this year. With the continued commit-ment of our personnel and volunteers along with the support of our community partners, animals in our community have a better chance of survival during a disaster!

Our Volunteers

Our volunteers give tirelessly year-round to the Humane Society, and without them we would not be able to give our adoption animals the quality of life that they deserve. We are inspired everyday by the positivity, hard work, and cooperative support that our volunteers demonstrate. We are so thankful for your invaluable help!

Kelly Kannenberg, one of our long-term volunteers, joined the Hu-mane Society staff this year as our Volunteer Coordinator. Kelly spearheaded the Pet As-sisted Therapy program, in which she trains an adoption dog to be a therapy dog and brings him or her to visit people in need of extra love. The adoption dogs love to have a job and the extra attention that comes along with it. People in the community are grateful to make a new furry friend. Some of the dogs even become officially certified as therapy

dogs, which helps them to be noticed and adopted! This year she expanded the program to include more volunteers and locations, and the program continues to be a success.

Our volunteer program has also been restructured to allow some of our seasoned volun-teers to become Lead Volunteers to help train newcomers! Sandee Randall works to train new Canine Companions and Pam Brown and Laurie Hummer work together to train new Cat Companions. We also expanded our volunteer program to allow volunteers to come in on Sundays, when the shelter is closed to the public.

Media, Publicity & Programs 2014

A picture is worth a thousand words... This year we stepped up our social media presence and created an Instagram account! Erica, our talent-ed Adoption Counselor, shares pictures and vid-eos of our adoption animals to allow the public to see their unique personalities in action. Our expanding participation in social media has cre-ated more opportunities for our animals to get noticed by potential adopters. We still market our animals the old-fashioned way as well – this year we launched Pets in the City, a program in which our volunteers can distribute flyers to local businesses and bulletin boards around town.

We also routinely go out into the community to share our message. This year, we attended the YMCA Senior Health and Fitness Day, Calle Real Sharing and Car-ing Block Party, the Fence Factory Adoption Event, Wags n’ Whiskers, Trails `n’ Tails, at the Botanic Garden and a memo-rial event at UCSB’s Thunderdome.

We love to bring the shelter to the people, so to speak, by stepping out in style with our adoptable dogs. A volunteer favor-ite is our monthly Beach Walks, in which we take our dogs on brief jaunts to the

beach. The dogs wear “Adopt Me” vests and love to play in the sand and meet their adoring fans. Kelly Kannenberg, our Volun-teer Coordinator, also started “Canines and Coffee,” where our volunteers bring some adoptable dogs to a local coffee shop to meet and greet the community. It’s a great opportunity to spread the word about what we do!

Humane society Veterinary Clinic

One of our ongoing goals here at the Santa Barbara Humane Society is to find a home for every animal in need. A critical component of that mission is the fight to combat overpopulation. Our onsite veterinary clinic provides spay and neuter surgeries for the general public to meet the ongoing need of affordable spay/neuter surgery in the Santa Barbara community. Dr. Christina Sisk, and her Veterinary Assistants Leah Blanco (Clinic Manager), Tiffany Evitts, and Monica Gonzales performed 1,580 surgeries on dogs and cats, and gave over 2,000 vac-cinations to pets owned by members of the Santa Barbara Humane Society.

We also partner with other animal welfare agencies that share our goals. In addition to our onsite veterinary clinic surgeries for the general public, we were able to part-ner with with B.U.N.S. (Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter) and perform surgeries for their adoptable rabbits on two special spay days. We continue to provide affordable spays and neuters for Dog Adoption Welfare Group (D.A.W.G.), County Animal Services, ResQCats, Cold Noses Warm Hearts, and C.A.R.E.4Paws clients.

We enjoyed participating with other shelters in Santa Barbara County to provide free spays and neuters in the month of May for Chihuahuas during “Chihuahuas de Mayo” and “Fix-a-Pit” in October. For our feline friends, we partnered with other local animal shelters to provide reduced fee surgeries during two month-long special offers known as “Beat the Heat” and “Cat-Nips”.

In 2014, to help with the parvo-virus outbreak occurring in Santa Barbara County and also help puppies and kittens get off to a healthy start, we started provid-ing de-worming for puppies and kittens at low-cost. Our Veterinary Clinic staff spends time with each new puppy owner explaining the importance of immu-nizations, routine wellness exams, spaying and neutering, and most importantly socialization to ensure the puppy will be a good canine citizen.

For adult cats and dogs, we began offering three-year distemper-parvo virus and feline distemper vaccines. In our Shelter Office, we started providing topical flea medication products (Advantage and Advantix) in addition to an alternative flea control product known as the Seresto Collar.

In addition to serving the public, our Clinic staff is proud to provide ongoing medical care for our adoption animals. Not every pet that is relinquished to us for adoption is healthy. Each animal is provided with a full health examination; we pull blood for laboratory analysis when an animal needs it, do dentals to keep their oral hy-giene healthy, perform mass removals, and vaccinate, deworm, spay or neuter and microchip each pet prior to adoption. Then, when an adopter becomes the owner of one our adoption animals we provide free veterinary care for 10 days following adoption to make sure that each pet gets a healthy start in their new home.

While we cannot take the place of regular veterinary visits with your veterinarian, we are able to provide low-fee vaccinations or a reduced-fee microchip if you are a member of the Santa Barbara Humane Society.

We are here for you when you need us five days a week, Monday through Friday!

2014 Income & Expenses

As in previous years, operating expenses exceeded operating income. Non-oper-ating income, grants, gifts and bequests offset the operating deficit and enabled us to provide programs and services consistent with the needs of the community. Your continued support and assistance is solicited to ensure continuation of ap-propriate levels of service. A complete statement of 2014 income and expendi-tures is available for examination in the administrative office.

The Santa Barbara Humane Society is a non-profit corporation. It receives no tax funds; con-tinuation of its programs depends entirely upon private sources of revenue. Your membership fees, endowments, and bequests are essential to financing its operation.

A portion of operating funds accrues from adoption fees, but these are held to a minimum to encourage adoptions. Some income is derived from boarding of members’ pets, and some from donations of visitors, and shelter sales of accessories. The present sources of income are insufficient to maintain Society activities at their programmed levels. We urge you not only to remit your contribution to the Society at an early date, but to ask friends who presently do not support the Society to become members by donating as their means allow. The Board has established the Santa Barbara Humane Society Endowment Fund for the purpose of receiving gifts and bequests whose principal will be invested and only the return used for So-ciety expenses and development. This alternative is in addition to the option which now permits the Board to use gifts and bequests to cover shortfalls in operations’ income at its discretion. Either form is wisely used and greatly appreciated in our common concern for animals. If you plan to remember the Society in your will, bear in mind that its corporate title is TheSanta Barbara Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, that it was incorporated in April 1887, and that it has no connection to any similar society. The following “Forms of Devise” are for your convenience.
