P a g e 4 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT STEPHEN MINISTRY

WHAT EXACTLY IS STEPHEN MINISTRY? Stephen Ministry is a ministry in our congregation in which trained and supervised lay persons, called Stephen Ministers, provide one-to-one Christian care to individuals facing life challenges or difficulties.

WHO IS INVOLVED? Stephen Leaders are the ones who oversee and direct our Stephen Ministry. They recruit, select, train, organize, and supervise our Stephen Ministers, identify people in need of care, and match them with a Stephen Minister. At present, there are four Stephen Leaders: Judy Rossman, Bernie Brown, Betty Noonan, and Dan Auge.

Stephen Ministers are the caregivers. They have engaged in 50 hours of training in Christian caregiving, including general topics such as listening, feelings, boundaries, assertiveness, and using Christian resources in caregiving. In addition, their training covered specialized topics such as ministering to the divorced, hospitalized, bereaved, and aging. We currently have 10 active Stephen Ministers. They are Elaine Ackerman, Gloria Brown, Barb Feichtinger, Janet Harrison, Diana McGinn, Mary Ellen Piel, Rose Stenech, Sheila Tuhy, Diane Wisniewski, and Jeanette Wojciuk-Graf. Our Stephen Leaders can also serve as Ministers, if needed.

Care Receivers are the recipients of Stephen Ministers' care. They are people from our church or community who are experiencing divorce, grief, loss of a job, loneliness, hospi-talization, terminal illness, or any of a number of other life difficulties. Stephen Ministers usually meet with their care receivers once a week for about an hour for as long as the care receiver will benefit by the relationship.

Judy can provide more information on how the Stephen Ministry program works and assist you with making an appointment as a Care Receiver or get you started on your journey to becoming a Stephen Minister.

MARKET ON THE MOVE UPDATE

To date, the six MOM events have served 2363 families at Santa Catalina. Most share the produce with more than one family which means that we have fed at least 5000 families with produce that would have gone to waste. MOM proved to be a large scale endeavor, but with the outstanding volunteers who stepped forward to assist, we were able to serve the com-munity with a much needed service.

A big applause to Mark Pincus and Jean Milne for taking on key roles. Mark will be the site coordinator. He will supervise the early morning set up and help with distribution of the produce. Jean supervises the cashiers and does the accounting for the day. She and her team have been

doing a great job. Martina Kimball and Colleen Nolan, who began this project, will continue marketing the event and communicating with the 3000 Club.

Also a huge thank you to our parish-ioners for helping to support our

parish ministries. We welcome every-one to join us at the MOM Apprecia-tion Event (see above) on Saturday, July 20.

Children should be viewed as a blessing, a source of happiness and joy to their parents (“Children” is from Hebrew word BEN, the same word referring to the unborn child as in Genesis 25: 21-22) . Un-born babies are children and parents should appre-ciate children as a blessing from God (see also Psalm 113:9). People who have a scriptural atti-tude will never kill unborn babies because they will never desire to do so. Abortion is the grossest form of ingratitude for a blessing given by God.

HEALTH & LIFE MINISTRY DID YOU KNOW? According to the 2010 Census, Pima County is home to 209,742 adults, age 60-65 (21.4% of the county’s total population), plus an additional 171,188 adults, age 65 and over, live in cities, towns, and unincorporated areas across Pima County. The fast-est growing age cohort is older adults age 85 and older.

These are the most vulnerable adults who tend to need long-term care and whose numbers are expected to double by 2020. Thirty-five percent of Pima County residents age 65 and older (52,953) are living on the economic margins with incomes be-low 200% of the federal poverty level. Social Security payments make up 90% or more of the total income received by 35 per-cent of all beneficiaries in 2009 (22% of married couples and 43% of non-married beneficiaries).

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reaches its high point a month from now at the feast of the Apostle. By now, tens of thousands of pilgrims are already on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pil-grims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized.

In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discom-fort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spiri-tuality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through life's hills and valleys.
