HEALTH & WELLNESS NEWS JUNE IS MYASTHENIA GRAVIS AWARENESS MONTH

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune neuro-muscular disease characterized by varying degrees of weakness of the skeletal (voluntary) muscles of the body. The name myasthenia gravis, which is Latin and Greek in origin, literally means “grave muscle weakness”. With current therapies, most cases of MG are not as “grave” as

the name implies. In fact, most individuals with MG have a normal life expectancy. The hallmark of MG is muscle weakness that increases during periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. Certain muscles such as those that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expression, chewing, talking and swallowing are often, but not always, involved in the disorder. The muscles that control breathing, neck, and limb movement may also be affected.

For more detailed information regarding causes, treatment, prognosis etc. go to www.myasthenia.org

LIFE TEEN GOSPEL REFLECTION - (LUKE 7:11-17) "Go and make disciples of all nations." Jesus is not only telling the eleven disciples to go and spread the word of God and to baptize people in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit but he is telling all of us to go and spread the word of God. Even though the disciples doubted when they were on the mountain we know that they went and spread the word of God. This is exactly what you and I should go do. Spread the word. Saying you are going to go and spread the word is easier than actually taking action. I find that I am afraid of what my friends will think because they aren't Catholic and don't always understand my faith. Being known as the "holy girl" isn't always easy but because I know that Jesus is with me, so I can live my faith boldly. As I grow more confident in my faith, I find myself telling people I will pray for them and now I find myself considering religious life. Jesus' call is an adventure, if we are willing to listen.

GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES In 1991, guerrillas in the village of Huasahuasi, Peru, executed Sister Irene McCormack, an Australian Josephite missionary. Her “crime” was feeding the poor. Despite warn-ings, Irene had chosen to stay teach-ing children in the impoverished vil-lage. One evening guerillas arrested her and took her to the village plaza, where her captors conducted a mock trial. Sister Irene was accused of being a “Yankee imperialist,” pronounced guilty, and shot. The villagers remem-ber Sister Irene and the five villagers who died with her in annual human rights events and community clean-ups. Sister Irene had explained to family and friends that the call to mission came to her through reflec-tion and prayer at the age of forty. She described it as an irresistible inner voice. To be true to herself as a woman, a Christian, a Josephite, and a world citizen, she felt that she had to respond to the Spirit or risk spiritual death.

Parish Couple Prayer Retreat / Marriage Retorno Strengthening the Sacrament of Marriage Through Scriptural Couple Prayer

July 12-13, 2014 In the Parish Hall

What is 2 Day Parish Couple Prayer Retreat/Marriage Retorno?

Marriage Retorno means turning toward God as a couple. It is a Saturday-Sunday prayer experience for husband and wife, facilitated by a married couple and a Catholic priest. It is geared to provide the participating couples with an opportunity for a renewal of their relationship as a couple with God through Scripture. Couples go home Saturday night and return Sunday morning.

What happens on a Marriage Retorno/Couple Prayer Retreat?

The 2 Day experience consists of four basic moments: a period of reconciliation as husband and wife; then three phases in which God is encountered through Scripture as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

This is a period of writing and sharing between husband and wife about their marriage, the level of trust and open-ness in their relationship, and the barriers to deeper union with each other. Three Phases of Listening Through Scriptures and Opening the Heart to God's Word.

Each phase offers the couple time for individual reflection, writing, and sharing while listening as God speaks through Scripture. There is time for: Prayer Alone, Prayer As A Couple, and Group Sharing.

The phases deal with finding the will of the Father, following the example of the Son, and becoming witnesses of God's love and unity through the Holy Spirit.

OUR LADY OF LIFE

Our Lady of Life Statue was formally dedicated at 2 pm on Sunday, May 11, 2014 by our Pastor, Fr. Larry Sanders. Approximately 30 parishioners attended the ceremony.

The four foot high statue of Our Blessed Mother was graciously donated by one of our very generous parishioners. The installation of the statue and the construction of the venue, which includes a patio, benches for reflection, landscaping and lighting was sponsored and managed by the Pro-Life Committee, Knights of Columbus Santa Catalina Council 12345. Memorial Bricks have been installed surrounding the statue. To date 153 bricks have been sold, which helped fund the project. These can still be purchased for $75-100 each through the Parish Office.

The statue dedicated to the sanctity of human life is a welcome addition to our Parish.

REDEMPTORIST RENEWAL CENTER UPCOMING EVENTS

SOULSWEPT - EXPLORING FEELINGS THROUGH CENTERING PRAYER

FRIDAY-SUNDAY, JUNE 6-8, 2014

Directed by Rev. Charlie Wehrley, C.Ss.R.

Centering prayer is an interior journey to the heart. Emotions are the stirrings of the soul. They are the melody of yearning for life, love, and purpose They are how we touch the Divine. Life is a continual soundtrack of our feelings. Yet,

many of us are detached and unaware of our feelings. We've silenced our life's soundtrack through emotional numbing-out. As a result, we don't dance through life anymore. Life is no longer animated because we are afraid to be vulnerable before God and others .

Many of us are afraid to unpack our feelings. Even though we are desperate to rejoin the dance of life, we are afraid to ask for help. We don't have to face our feelings alone. We can ask God to help us get back in touch with our feelings through centering prayer.

In doing so. we will allow God to sweep through us bringing light and healing to our souls. And once we are Soulswept by the Spirit of God, we will get our groove back. Come rejoin the Dance of Life!

For more information about specific times and fees or to register, please call 520-744-3400 or visit their website at DesertRenewal.org and

HEALTH & WELLNESS MINISTRY: Do you have room in your heart to support the Health & Wellness needs of others in our Community? Do you enjoy being in ministry with other Christian Faith Commu-nities, as well as your own?

Pope Francis invites ALL of us to “reach out beyond our own inter-ests and concerns to be aware of the needs of others”…especially the needs of the sick and poor.

The Health & Wellness Ministry needs members who can respond to our Pope’s invitation. If you hear that call (and you don’t necessarily need to be a current or retired health care professional), please contact Sr. Jean Mariani, OSF at 825-9611, x110 for more infor-mation.

You Did It For Me Maude* had fought a long struggle with depression, and suffered from occa-sional suicidal thoughts.

After being referred to a counseling program run by Catholic Charities, she was prescribed medication and began therapy to help her focus on the positive aspects of life. A sliding scale has helped Maude afford the treatment, and she is now maintaining a healthy outlook with the help of a monthly check-in appoint-ment.

Every year, Catholic Charities agencies pro-vide mental health and counseling services to over 250,000 adults and seniors in need. To learn more, please visit www.CatholicCharitiesUSA.org.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the Easter season until now, we have heard accounts of the Risen Lord's appearances to his disciples, sometimes individually, but most often when they are assembled together, and very often at meals. Now they are faced with the mystery of the Lord's disappearance from their sight, coupled with a deepening awareness of his constant presence. We recall the days when the church took shape from the quality of relationships forged among the first disciples through their following of Christ. From then on, they are meant to be the sign of Christ's pres-ence in the world. As we, the baptized, gather week by week, we too are shaped into a sacrament of God's justice for the world. Like the first disciples, we too are "works in progress," unfinished works of art. Many of us are splashed with water at the beginning of Mass in this season, an effective and refreshing wake-up call for us to engage ever more fully with our baptism. We are nearing the end of ninety days of renewal. Lent and Easter are drawing to a rousing close. Has Christ "Eastered" in you yet?
