Are you prepared for the heat this summer?

The State Emergency Service (SES) is responsible for issuing Extreme Heat warnings to the community when pre-determined triggers are met.

Here are some simple things you can do to reduce the impact of extreme heat:

Stay Hydrated – you should drink two to three litres of water a day even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid “fizzy”, alcoholic and caffeinated drinks and do not take salt tablets (unless instructed to by a doctor)

Dress for Summer – lightweight, light coloured clothing reflects heat and sunlight and helps your body maintain a normal temperature

Check on those at Risk – visit at-risk individuals such as the sick and elderly at least twice a day and keep an eye on children. Watch for signs of heat-related illness

Minimise Sun Exposure – keep out of the sun as much as possible. If you must be in the sun, wear a shirt, hat and sunglasses. Also make sure you wear sunscreen to prevent sunburn, which limits the body’s ability to cope with heat

Prepare your Home – Prepare your home early. Service or replace your air conditioner BEFORE you need it. Curtains, awnings and blinds can also help to keep the home cool

Make use of Air Conditioning – if you don’t have air conditioning, make use of public facilities such as shopping centres, art galleries, cinemas or other air-conditioned buildings. Portable fans are also useful in drawing in cool air, or exhausting warm air from a room

Remember your Pets – pets can be particularly vulnerable to the heat. Make sure they have shade and plenty of cool water to last the day

Seek Medical Advice if Necessary – for medical advice telephone Healthdirect Australia on 1800 022 222. For immediate medical assistance telephone 000

Telecross REDi: The Telecross REDi service supports people by regularly calling registered people during heatwaves. Telecross REDi is activated by the South Australian Department for Communities & Social Inclusion when an extreme weather event is declared. More information is available HERE

The Meat Pie: Australia’s Own Fast Food Exhibition

The Town of Walkerville Library is one of 10 libraries chosen to host in 2017 a graphic display about the history of the meat pie entitled “The Meat Pie: Australia’s own fast food”

This exhibition is on free loan from the Australian Society for History of Engineering and Technology (ASHET) in NSW.

This display is the principal outcome of a project commenced in 2013 by ASHET to research and record the history of the Australian meat pie. The project was funded by a substantial grant from the Australian Government’s Your Community Heritage Program.

The exhibition was launched in February 2015 at History House by Associate Professor Carol Liston, President of the Royal Australian Historical Society.

The exhibition has toured NSW public libraries during the last two years.

The display consists of nine free-standing panels about the history of the Australian meat pie and one panel about ASHET.

“The Meat Pie: Australia’s own fast food” exhibition will be on display for the month of January 2017.

Update on Repair work to Infrastructure Damage on River Torrens.

Repair works will commence today (Friday) on the Frome Reserve bridge and boardwalk as well as riverbank repairs along the shared use path.

We expect some of the works to be completed before Christmas.

Orders for materials for the repair works to Creswell Reserve bridge will occur prior to Christmas with actual works due to commence early in the new year. All repair work is expected to be complete by mid-February 2017.

Gilberton Swing bridge will remain closed until full refurbishment is complete. This project is wholly managed by the City of Norwood Payneham St Peters.

Update on Road Reseal Program.

Council as part of its shared services agreement with Campbelltown City Council are repairing the kerbs and gutters in Hamilton Street, Vale Park and Fuller Street & Smith Street, Walkerville.

The work commenced on 7 December. Once this work is complete, the reseal of the road surfaces will occur in early 2017 and continue through to March 2017.

It is not expected that traffic or bus services will be severely affected during this time however traffic diversions may be in place. A notification flyer to affected residents will be distributed one week prior to the commencement of the works.

Cambridge Street Sinkhole Repair

Camco Pty Ltd is currently filling and capping an old well which has fallen in at Cambridge Street, Vale Park.

This well has collapsed several times in the past 30 years due to materiel being leached out into the underground street in this area.

The well is being backfilled with large concrete material and a heavy duty “cap” will be installed over the hole (suitable for truck traffic).

This will prevent further sink holes appearing in the future. The cap will be asphalted late next week and the full width of the road will be reopened to traffic after that occurs.

Volunteers working in Linear Park

Council have engaged a group of nine volunteers from Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA). They have been assigned to three locations – Willow Bend, Gilbert Pool and Hamilton Reserve.

The volunteers will be working along Linear Park on the following dates;

12th, 17th, 20th, 21st and 22nd December 2016; and

11th and 15th January 2017
