Verdant Wild founder Elizabeth (Liz) Hodges spent her early child-

hood years on a 40-acre homestead in Washington State, following her mother around the garden, pasture, root cellar and kitchen. After losing her mother to melanoma when she was young, Liz occasionally visited her aunt’s farm just outside the north-ern California beach town of Santa Cruz. In 2006, she moved to the area, where she seasonally harvested lav-ender and bottled olive oil with her aunt for 10 years.

Liz decided to study horticulture, which detoured into serving on the Slow Food Santa Cruz board, doing freelance food blogging and writ-ing for Edible: Monterey Bay. Liz came back to her plan and founded the Verdant apothecary in 2015, to fulfill your quest for nontoxic and accessible, yet ef-fective botanical skin care products, and has branched into crafting soaps and herbal remedies as well. She now pursues a lifelong study of herbalism. Her favorite thing to do in her free time is to wander about hillsides, learning and identifying plants and fungi and

The answer is always YES.YES, you want more from your

job or your clients. YES, you’re sure there’s more they can give. YES, you need additional com-pensation, wheth-er monetarily or in perks. Your heels are dug in and you’re not giving up until you get the answer you want but first, read “Ask for More” by Alexandra Carter and see if you have the right questions.The art of negotiation in-volves stating what you want, then fighting to get it, right? Or never giving an inch until you get a kilo-meter? Carter says that most p e o -ple think that way about negotiating, and they’re wrong.Today’s negotiation, she says, is not conflict or a win-lose process. It’s a conversation you’re steering, with give-and-take involved. It’s being transpar-ent with information, for the good of both parties. It’s knowing how to ask open questions.Once you have that last part down pat – because it’s key to the whole process – Carter says there are ten questions to ask yourself a day or two before the ne-gotiations begin. They’re in two parts: The Mirror (you), and The Window (the person you’re negotiating with).

Start with the former by asking your-self what you really want, but be very p a t i e n t with your answers; this is

not the time for knee-jerk reactions. Avoid why; that word points blame. Jot down your answers, and include even your wild-est thoughts. Before you get to The Window part of this process, learn to listen, which is something most adults don’t do well. Ask those open-ended ques-tions, and then shut up and enjoy the silence while the

other person thinks or recon-siders. Know how to follow up to get the information you need and the in-formation you didn’t know you needed. Pay attention to what’s unsaid.
