Your boss is a VIP: a Very Important Person.

Nothing gets done without approval from the Executive Suite and nothing is unnoticed; there’s a finger on the pulse of your company at all times, which is prob-ably how The Boss got to the top. And in the new book “Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?” by Alyssa Mastromonaco (with Lauren Oyler), you’ll see what it’s like to work for a guy who’s more than just the president of any corporation…

Born in the mid-1970s and raised in small-town Vermont, Mastromonaco says she was inde-pendent early-on and marched to her own drummer but wasn’t particularly political unless it was “cool.” Neverthe-less, one summer between college se-mesters, she interned for Bernie Sanders and discovered what she wanted to do with her life.

But first, she worked as a paralegal. She had a short stint in finance, and she worked at Sotheby’s. Finally, she practically begged for a job with John Kerry’s team, but she says she knew that she didn’t want to work for anyone who’d ever want to run for president, so she procured a job with Senator Barack Obama’s team. Ha!

There were no working manuals for the youngest woman to ever assume the office of deputy chief of staff to the presi-dent. It was hard to find advice (“… all my mentors were men”)

and so Mastromonaco decided to write a book in answer the question of do-abil-ity for the average job-seeker.

If you want a job in politics, “always be pre-pared” because “Preparation is protection you can create for yourself.” Walk with

purpose; try “to look like you belong.” Before you take a job, “ask to see where you’ll be sitting.” Be “rea-sonable, savvy, and polite…” to the en-tire staff, and know as much as possible about the people you meet. Remember that “your credit score matters.” Watch what you do on social media. Take care of yourself. And finally, when it’s time to go, go… but do it with class.

Though author Alyssa Mastromonaco (with Lauren Oyler) says she hadn’t planned on making this book a biog-raphy, that’s about half of what you get here. The other half is sass and swagger and more profanity than you should expect, mixed with business advice that sometimes hovers between the lines.

“Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?” indeed.

Actually, you will. This book is a unique insider’s peek at how presidential campaigns are run, how POTUS trav-els seemingly seamlessly, and how one person does the 24/7 job of six. Readers with their sights set on major behind-the-scenes political employment will appreciate Mastromonaco’s truthfulness: she writes of sleepless nights and “the loneliest time of my life,” as well as the rewards of an interesting job – all of which she tells with humor and not just a little pride.

This is an easy-to-enjoy book that makes readers feel more in-the-know, especially if you’re curious, business-minded, or love politics. For you, the VIP in “Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?” is in its Very Important Page n

On a regular basis, we listen as new business owners share how they ran a couple of print

or radio ads to help generate foot traffic and tell the world they’ve opened their doors. The story usually ends with the fact that they weren’t able to determine whether these marketing strategies worked or not, but they do know that they spent too much of their marketing budget. In today’s article, we want to provide you steps to ensure that you are properly approaching your market-ing strategy before your extra time and budget are gone.

We intend to give you the bottom line on best practices and when it comes to “getting your name out there,” we offer ten essential steps for you to follow. Keep in mind that we are making the as-sumption that you have already conducted a de-cent amount of market research, as well as brand development. With that said, here we go:

1. What are the business goals and milestones that you want to reach?

2. In many cases, sales and foot traffic are top choices, so you will need to determine your core product(s) and/or services(s).

3. Who is your target audience for these prod-ucts and services? (Please refer to our column in the August 23, 2016 Santa Cruz Record.)

4. Write down all of the places, activities, hob-bies, likes, dislikes and the overall day-to-day lifestyle that would be part of a typical week for your target audience.

5. Create a realistic marketing budget, don’t worry, a lot can be done with close to nothing.

6. Figure out which marketing vehicles will help you reach your target audience during a given week, i.e. events, strategic partnerships, adver-tising, PR, etc.

7. Form a marketing plan that outlines the specific marketing vehicles you will us, which months you’ll use them and how much they will cost.

8. Investigate each of these strategies and price them out to ensure your estimated costs are realistic.

9. For each marketing vehicle, create an action plan where you drill down into the details of what needs to happen to make them work effi-ciently and effectively.

10. Always build a tracking component into your marketing to determine what’s working and what isn’t.

We realize this involves some work, but your efforts will certainly pay off. You may very well determine that your marketing can reach your target audience with very little money, which could be contradictory to the cold calls you re-ceive on a regular basis. One of our top tips is to make sure you’re always tracking your marketing, be sure your employees are doing this for each and every customer.
