The passion, death and resurrection of Jesus mark the climax of His salvific acts. The seven weeks between Denha and the feast of Easter are set apart for prayer, fasting, abstinence and reparation. The basis of this lenten season is the

forty days fast of Jesus. Still, we call this period ‘Anpathu Nombu’(50 days’ fasting). Probably, because St.Thomas Christians fasted and abstained from ‘pethurtha’ Sunday to Easter Sunday. The Syriac term ‘pethurtha’ means ‘looking back’, ‘reconciliation’ etc. Lent is a season set apart mainly for repentance and reconciliation.

We who became God’s children and new creation in baptism drifted away from God by committing sin. During this season we meditate upon man’s sin and its consequences, the need for repentance and conversion, the infinite love and mercy of God towards repentant sinners and the passion, death and burial of Jesus Christ. Lenten season calls our attention in a special way to the need for reconciliation with God and fellow beings. Therefore, in this period, the Church persuades the faithful to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. The Church reminds us to spend the lenten period in fervent prayers, sincere fasting and generous almsgiving and to eradicate our evil desires. Like Jesus who conquered death and entered into life, let us also die to sin and enter into eternal life.

Feast of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara and St. Sebastian on January 3rd 2016

The parish community celebrated the feast of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara and St. Sebastian on January 3rd, 2016. The feast celebration was marked by a grand procession following the Holy Qurbana, Novena prayers and veneration of Holy relic. The tradition of Kazhunnu (Ambu) Nercha was celebrated during the

celebrations. St Sebastian is the patron of plague sufferers for his reported cures of those afflicted with many diseases. St. Chavara ward under the leadership of ward president Paulachan Vareed coordinated

the festal celebrations.

Vicar’s Message...

My dear brothers and sisters

We are about to enter the most fruitful and grace-filled of

all liturgical seasons, the season of Lent. This year it has

deeper significance: this is the year of the extraordinary

jubilee of mercy. Each of us is called to give out in our

daily life, the mercy which God the father constantly

extends to us. During the last 2 months we have been hearing a lot

about “Doors of Mercy”. The underlying idea is that as

Christ is the door through which we enter Salvation and Grace, so also, we

should be Doors through which others find way to lasting peace and serenity.

We are called to show mercy because Mercy has been shown to us.

Let us always remember, “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain

mercy” - Mt 5:7. This is the Beatitude to which we should particularly aspire in

this Holy season of Lent. Just as Jesus is merciful so we are called to be

merciful to each other.

My dear siblings in Christ, let us keep in mind that mercy is the very

foundation of life in Church. I wish to remind you that our Parish retreat for the

Lenten season is scheduled on 26, 27, 28 February 2016.

Bishop Mar Lawrence Mukkuzhy will be the preacher. The CCD students

will also have the retreat on these days. I extort you all to make use of this

opportunity to get closer to God.

The world pulls us in many directions, and it is up to each of us to travel

back to God to set right our ways and thus to grow in greater Grace and

Holiness. This is what gifts us spiritual, physical and mental wellbeing. Please

adjust your schedule, so that you can benefit in full measure from this retreat.

The Holy week which is the culmination of Lent demands of each of us a more

fervent prayer life and deeds of charity which will be manifested in opening

our hearts wider to those in need of our help, support, prayer, presence,

kindness and fraternity

Let us fill this Holy season with spiritual and corporal works of Mercy as

desired by Pope Francis. God the Father is patient with us, in turn, let us

resolve to be more patient and kind. Thus let us live this season of Lent in this

Jubilee year more intensely and experience and celebrate Gods mercy. Let us

allow our hearts to be touched by God!

BIBLE JEOPARDY

Subject : Gospel of Luke and Year of Mercy

Preliminary Test - Sunday, April 10th

Semifinal Test-Sunday, May 1st

A question bank consisting of 200 Sample questions and

answers from Luke’s gospel have been given to all

students from 3rd grade to 12th grade for study. Please

encourage your child to read the Bible chapters and

study well in addition to the sample questions given.

For the Preliminary test (Sunday, April 10th), questions

will be chosen from Gospel of Luke question bank as

follows

Category 1 Grades 3-5: 30 questions (Luke Chap 1-10)

Category 2 Grades 6-8: 40 Questions (Luke Chap 1-18)

Category 3 Grades 9-12: 50 Questions (Luke Chap 1-24)

For the Semifinal test (Sunday, May 1st), 40 percent

questions will be from the question bank and 60

percent will be completely new questions based on

Gospel of Luke for each category. If there is a tie,

there will be a tie breaker test on Sunday May 8th.

Grades 3-5: 20 Questions (Luke Chap 1-10)

Grades 6-8: 30 questions (Luke Chap 1-18)

Grades 9-12: 40 Questions (Luke Chap 1-24)

For the Final Jeopardy (Sunday June 5 tentatively), the

top three scorers of the semifinal test from each

category will be chosen to form three teams. Each team

consists of one member from each category.

Scheme for Final Bible Jeopardy: Questions

will be from Gospel of Luke 1-24 Chapters and

Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Bible Jeopardy Grand Finale - Sunday, June 5th

The School of Religious Education is conducting Children’s Talent Competitions on Saturday, March 12. The competitions are

open to students from Pre-K to 12th grade. Pre-registration is required to participate in the competitions. Register before

February 14 by paying $5:00 per student. A child can register for a maximum of 4 items. First and second prizes will be given to

the winners. In addition, there will be special recognition awards for Kalathilakom and Kalaprathibha.

Lent : Facts to Remember

Why do we put ash on our forehead?

Ashes are applied to our forehead in the sign of the cross as the words,

"Remember, you are dust and to dust you shall return" are spoken to us. This act symbolizes our mortality as well as our need for ongoing repentance.

It is a reminder that this life is short and merely a foreshadowing of what we shall become through the redemption of Jesus Christ on the cross.

The ashes normally are made from blessed palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday. The ashes are sprinkled with Holy Water and incensed before distribution.

Prayer + Fasting + Almsgiving

The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Prayer: More time given to prayer during Lent should draw us closer to the Lord.

Fasting: Fasting, one of the most ancient practices linked to Lent, is a means of developing self-control and is an aid to prayer, as the pangs of hunger remind us of our hunger for God.

Almsgiving: Almsgiving, linked to our baptismal commitment, is a sign of our care for those in need and an expression of our gratitude for all that God has given to us.

Now Pope Francis calls Catholics also to ecological conversion, so future generation can inherit an Earth that sustains all of them and all of God’s Creatures. His encyclical Laudato Si’ wants us to r e c o g n i z e t h a t a s consumers we participate in causing climate change and as Christians we must learn to care for our common home.

Do an activity each day of Lent

Try to understand another’s point of view. Make someone laugh. Praise someone honestly. Say, “ I’m Sorry “ Mean it. Act like Jesus. Clean up an eyesore in y o u r n e i g h b o r h o o d . Respond the first time

someone calls you. Send a crocus to someone from who you are estranged. Ask God to do what is best for the public person you dislike most. Help someone realize his or her self-worth. Cement a friendship. Try not to waste anything for one whole day. Call someone who is lonely. Drive patiently today. Resist trying to be the center of attention. Be a shoulder to cry on. Expand your horizons – go to a lecture, read a book, see a play. Be patient with others. Refuse to gossip. Refuse to whine. Readily forgive anyone who hurts you. Surprise yourself. Make someone else the center of attention. If you love someone, say so. Advocate on behalf of social issues such as affordable housing. Thank God for the gift of life. Pray for a friend. Pray for an enemy. Start something good. Give away all your “ extras” . Resist

judging coworkers. Examine your conscience. Stop a label or stereotype in your workplace. Refuse to judge or categorize others. Be a sign of hope for someone who is depressed. Spend some silent time alone. Be a peacemaker at work or school. Recognize the truth about yourself-no_ matter how good it is Participate actively in Holy Week worship. Sing an alleluia

The Sunday gospels of Lent 2016 challenges us to give people another chance, to work on ourselves rather than judge others, to sin no more. Each Lent we turn again to the church’s ancient practices to a w a ke n o u r o f te n c o m p l a c e n t s p i r i t s . Traditionally we pray, fast and give alms.

Our prayer this Lent can give us time to notice how climate change affects the trees, birds, insects, soil, and water where we live. We ca fast from what dulls and drugs us in order to feast on friendship ad reflection. Giving alms invites us to consider the cost of our lifestyles to people who are poor in the world.

Pope Francis sees climate change with the eyes of people who are poor. He want us to redefine progress and help people who are poor Have the basics to live. Lent is a season for winter hearts to melt, regenerate. And renew our commitment as Easter people. We believe that like God’s love and Jesus’ love, our love can give life – to our planet, its creatures and each other.

രുെുതെമോയ നെോരോവസ്ഥ മേുഷ്യന്റെ അസ്തിതവരത്ത ഗ്പതിസന്ധിയിലോക്കുന്നു. ആഴത്തിലുള്ള നെോൈയങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉത്തെം കിെോരത മേുഷ്യൻ പകച്ചു േിൽക്കുന്ന ജീവിത സന്ധിയോണത്. നെോരനത്തോടുള്ള ആൈയ ഗ്പതികെണം നെോഷ്മോണ്. ഇത് എന്തുരകോണ്ട് എേിക്ക് സംഭവിച്ചു? േമ്മൾ േിെോശ്യിൽ പതിക്കുന്നു. എലലോം േഷ്ടരപെതോയി േമ്മൾ കെുതുന്നു... ഒന്നിേും അർത്ഥമിരലലന്ന് നതോന്നിനപോകുന്ന േിമിഷ്മോണത്. ദൈവ വിശ്വോസം േഷ്ടരപടോവുന്ന േിമിഷ്ങ്ങ ോണവ. പനക്ഷ, വിശ്വോസത്തിന്റെ ശ്ക്തി രവ ിരപടുന്ന േിമിഷ്ങ്ങ ും അവ തരന്നയോണ്. വിശ്വോസത്തിൽ നെോരവും ൈുെിതവും ഒനന്നോരട ഇലലോതോകുന്നിലല; ഗ്പതയുത, നയശ്ു േനമ്മോരടോപമുണ്ട് എന്ന തിെിച്ചറിവിന്രറ ശ്ക്തി േമുക്ക് അേുഭവിക്കോേോകുന്നു. ആ തിെിച്ചറിവിന്റെ തോനക്കോൽ നമെിയോണ്, നയശ്ുവിന്രറ സോമീപയം നേെിെ് അേുഭവിച്ചിെുള്ള നമെി! വിശ്ുദ്ധ േോടുക ിൽ രെഗ്ബുവെി 11-ന് ആെെിക്കരപടോൻ നപോകുന്ന 'യരാഗികളുദ്െ െി ാചരണ'നത്തോട് അേുബന്ധിച്ചോണ് പിതോവ് ഈ സനന്ദശ്ം അയച്ചത്.

നയശ്ുവിന്റെ ആൈയരത്ത അത്ഭുത ഗ്പവർത്തേ നവൈിയോയ കോേോയിരല കലയോണ വിെുന്ന്, പിതോവ് തന്റെ സനന്ദശ്ത്തിൽ പെോമർശ്ിച്ചു. തന്റെ മോതോവിന്റെ നഗ്പെണയിലോണ് നയശ്ു ആൈയരത്ത അത്ഭുതം ഗ്പവർത്തിക്കുന്നത്. കോേോയിരല വിവോഹവിെുന്ന് തിെുസഭയുരട െിഗ്തം തരന്നയോണ് േൽകുന്നത്. ശ്ിഷ്യന്മോർക്ക് േടുവിലോയി നയശ്ുവുണ്ട്; കെുണനയോരട അത്ഭുതം ഗ്പവർത്തിച്ചു രകോണ്ട് നയശ്ു തന്റെ അമ്മയുരട അഭീഷ്ടം േിറനവറിരകോടുക്കുന്നു. സോധോെണക്കോെുരട ഗ്പശ്േങ്ങൾ മേസിലോക്കുന്ന, അവെുരട സനന്തോഷ്ത്തിൽ പങ്കുരകോള്ളുന്ന, ഒെമ്മരയയോണ് േോം കോണുന്നത്. വിവോഹ വീെിരല സങ്കടം തീർക്കോേോയി ആ അമ്മ തന്റെ മകന്റെ സഹോയം അർത്ഥിക്കുന്നു. അമ്മയുരട മോദ്ധയസ്ഥം മകന് തള്ളിക്ക യോേോവിലല. സഭയുരട ഭോരയമോണ് ആ അമ്മ. േമ്മുരട വിഷ്മങ്ങ ിൽ മോതോവ് േമുക്ക് മദ്ധയസ്ഥയോകുന്നു. േമ്മുരട വിശ്വോസത്തിേേുസെിച്ച് അവിരട നയശ്ുവിന്റെ അത്ഭുതം േടക്കും. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കോെുണയമോണ് േമുക്ക് കേയകോനമെിയിൽ കോണോൻ കഴിയുന്നത്. ഈ കോെുണയം നെോരിക ുരടയും പീഠിതെുരടയും ആശ്വോസമോണ്. വിശ്വോസനത്തോരട േോം മോതോവിന്റെ മോദ്ധയസ്ഥതയ്ക്കോയി ഗ്പോർത്ഥിക്കുക. ശ്ോെീെിക സുഖ്ത്തിേും അപുറത്തുള്ള, നയശ്ുവിന്റെ സമോധോേം േമുക്ക് ലഭിക്കും. നെോരവും ൈുെിതവും ഒെു േിരൂഢ െഹസയമോണ്. നയശ്ു വിശ്വസികൾക്കോയി അതിേന്റെ അർത്ഥം രവ ിവോക്കി തെുന്നു.
