COURSE PROGRAM INFORMATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION Hereditary ataxias and spastic paraplegias are complex genetic disorders. The knowledge, information and concepts have expanded and evolved substantially during the past few years. The advances have established a solid base to potential therapeutic approaches. This course will discuss clinical manifestations, physiopathology, rehabilitation, genetic aspects, management, as well as future directions in the field of ataxias and spastic paraplegias. This will be an interactive course with audience participation and patient videos on clinical cases.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES After participating in this activity, the learner will be able to:

• Recognize typical and less common forms of inherited ataxias and spastic paraplegias• Identify pathophysiology (pharmacologic, genetic and biochemical) of ataxias and spastic paraplegias• Acquire knowledge of pharmacological, rehabilitation and other treatment approaches on ataxias and

spastic paraplegias.

TARGET AUDIENCE Medical doctors, physiotherapists, speech therapists, physiatrists, medical students, and allied health professionals.

COURSE LANGUAGE All printed course materials are in English. Lectures will be presented in either Portuguese or English at the discretion of the presenting faculty. Simultaneous translations of the lectures from Portuguese to Spanish are available.
