SAP’s vision is to help the world run better and improve people’s lives. In service to this enduring purpose, we have committed our people and our products to address the world’s biggest economic, environmental, and societal issues. SAP customers have made significant impact in areas such as chronic disease prevention, humanitarian relief, digital government, and energy efficiency. We are inspired by these

efforts. We also know that much more work lies ahead. This publication shows what is possible when modern innovation is applied to longstanding global concerns. Mobility, cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things – all enabled by our once in a generation SAP HANA architecture – give us more potential than ever before. A better, more intelligent world is now within

our grasp. We now have the technology to deliver economic opportunity for all people and substantially improve lives. Let’s come together and tackle the greatest challenges because they truly are our biggest opportunities. I warmly welcome you to this cause. Bill McDermottCEO, SAP SE

Improving: the Economy, Society, and the Environment

The world today presents us with opportunities like never before. But it also poses challenges on a much

larger scale.

The United Nations has defined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to transform the world’s economy, society, and environment. These goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

We integrate these goals with our own vision and higher purpose: to help the world run better and improve people’s lives. They inspire us to remain focused on doing our part to solve the most pressing issues facing

the billions of inhabitants on our precious planet Earth.

As Lise Kingo, Executive Directorof the UN Global Compact, said, “Businesses today are expected to be part ofthe solution to our world’s greatest challenges – from climate and water crises, to inequality and poverty […]. For companies ready to take on the agenda, the SDGs provide a platform to show responsibility, pursue opportunity and innovation, and inspire other businesses to get on board.”

We believe digital technologies will enable companies and organizations to tackle some of the world’s most complex, intractable problems, such as abolishing poverty, saving

the lives of the more than 6 million children who don’t live to see their fifth birthdays, and reducing global CO2 emissions by a third – to name a few.

SAP’s opportunity is to provide our customers, partners, and consumers with the tools they need to have an impact – whether it’s empowering the poor through financial services, providing personalized medicine, building infrastructure, or combating climate change. In collaboration with our customers and other organizations, we are determined to deliver on our higher purpose of making the world a better, more sustainable place, ultimately improving the lives of billions of people.

EconomyEconomic improvement goes beyond revenue growth. It includes providing meaningful, purpose-driven work to people across the world – empowering prosperity through a living wage, shelter, and nutrition. Ensuring economic improvements also means promoting innovation to develop strong industries and infrastructure, while building trust by protecting every individual and organization’s privacy.

SocietyHealth, education, access to technology, and public safety are at the core of a peaceful and just society. They enable citizen engagement, strong public institutions, and human progress. When people are more productive and feel a sense of belonging, they lead happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.

EnvironmentClimate change touches everyone and will impact the lives of future generations. Whether in rural or urban areas, the need for water, clean energy, and responsible development is key to continued prosperous life on this planet.

Economy

Work & ProsperityThe main factor in providing economic empowerment and ending poverty, hunger, and exclusion is fairly paid jobs. Creating 30 million jobs every year would eradicate poverty.* SAP software helps companies work better to bring economic prosperity and jobs to people around the world.

Economy

Innovation & SecurityInnovation is key to human progress and economic development.* But in this age of hyper-connectivity and cloud, security and privacy are major concerns for people and companies alike. SAP provides innovative solutions with world class security standards to more than 300,000 customers so they can in turn develop their respective industries, provide work, and ensure the mobility of people and goods, thereby improving people’s standard of living.

Society

Health & EducationHealth and education are essential to well-being and sustainable development. For example, since 2000, measles vaccines have averted nearly 15.6 million deaths.* SAP technology is at the epicenter of complex medical issues around prevention, treatments, and cures for cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. We are also deeply committed to empowering the world’s youth, working adults, differently abled people and the unemployed with the right skills they need to thrive in the digital economy.

We can help the 2.2 billion people who live on less than $2 a day earn a decent living*

We can give >2 billion people permanent access to electricity*

We can save the lives of >6 million children who today don’t live to see their fifth birthday*

Society

Smart Cities and Safe CommunitiesCities are centers of innovation and culture, but are facing growing populations and aging infrastructure. Half of humanity – 3.5 billion people – lives in cities today, and it will grow to 60% by 2030.* SAP solutions for the Internet of Things can help manage and monitor resources so cities can run more sustainably and help citizens enjoy happier, safer lives.

Environment

Clean Planet and Climate ChangeWe are all affected by climate change. For example, energy accounts for approximately 60% of total greenhouse gas emissions.* Therefore, lowering energy consumption and producing cleaner energy are essential to our well-being. SAP technology is helping our customers make the world more energy efficient, cleaner, and greener for future generations.

Environment

Responsible GrowthWith the world population growing steadily, humanity will need to provide water, food, and shelter to billions of additional people in the coming years. For example, more than 80% of waste water resulting from human activities is discharged into rivers or seas without any pollution removal.* SAP solutions help optimize resource utilization and minimize waste, supporting the responsible growth practices necessary to ensure the survival of future generations.

We can improve the lives of the 60% of humanity who will live in cities by 2030*

We can reduce by 1/3 global CO2 emissions, back to the 1990 level*

We can encourage millions of companies around the world to adopt sustainable practices for clean water, resource and energy consumption*

At SAP we are committed to creating a business beyond bias, and have made significant investments in programs and technology to enable not only our own organization, but also our customers and partners, to achieve greater diversity and inclusion for all underrepresented groups.

By building new capabilities into our SAP SuccessFactors Human Capital Management Suite to help identify and eliminate bias in the workforce, we have been able to implement numerous initiatives to ensure we are providing a diverse and inclusive environment. As a global organization with more than 80,000 employees representing 150 nationalities, we encourage different perspectives. Our diversity efforts

focus on gender equality, multi-generational issues, culture and ethnicity, equality for LGBT colleagues, and inclusion of those who are differently abled.

We are proud of our accomplishments in these areas. We recently became the first multinational tech company to achieve the global Economic Dividends for Gender Equality (EDGE) certification. Our groundbreaking “Autism At Work” program, which currently employs over 100 colleagues, has also received international recognition. Disrupting Slavery and Combatting Human Trafficking

Slavery was abolished centuries ago. Yet human trafficking continues around the world. There are an estimated 20 to 30 million forced laborers in global supply chains today – from conflict minerals in Congo, to fishing in Thailand, to migrant workers in the United States and North America.

SAP Ariba and Made in a Free World are working closely together to help businesses gain deeper insights from their suppliers – and from the suppliers’ suppliers – to detect and

eradicate forced and child labor from the global supply chain.

In this way, procurement organizations worldwide will have greater power to track raw materials that go into their products, and identify potential risks based on location or other factors. In addition to activism, greater transparency enables a collaborative effort to improve business practices, fight forced labor and create economic prosperity for almost 30 million people, many of them children.

ASCO: Making a World of Difference in Cancer Care

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is the world’s leading professional organization for physicians and oncology professionals caring for people with cancer. Founded in 1964, ASCO has grown to over 40,000 members, with $5 billion in annual funding.

Every year, 14 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer. To give each one the best options and outcomes, doctors need to know what worked before and the latest results from clinical trials. As there are thousands of trials in progress, and millions of previous patients, the challenge is how to provide cancer patients with personalized care informed by the data of nearly every patient treated before them.

ASCO is using big data and innovating on the SAP HANA platform for CancerLinQ, which analyzes 850,000 electronic patient health records to determine which treatments are likely to work best for each individual.

Providing Humanitarian Aid to Refugees in Germany

Addressing the global refugee crisis requires the involvement of politicians, citizens, and companies. Financial assistance, inclusive educational measures, and appropriate IT solutions can all play an important role. At SAP we are committed to impact all three areas.

In addition to financial support, SAP has launched a free award-winning massive open online course that enables volunteers to help refugees learn basic German for everyday use.

In close cooperation with UNHCR, SAP organizes coding workshops in refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and Egypt. These “Refugee

Code Weeks” aim to provide basic programming skills to 10,000 kids and youth. Coding “Boot Camps” are offered to the top-talented students with the goal of graduating entry-level computer engineers ready for international hiring. Almost 100 refugees with technical knowledge have participated in a six-month internship, with the opportunity to apply for permanent positions at SAP.

In addition, through our social media platform, SAP JAM, we are helping local municipalities and aid organizations connect and collaborate easily.

Fundação Amazonas Sustentável: Helping the Amazon’s River People Protect the Rainforest

The Amazon rainforest is the largest, most diverse bio-system on our planet. It supplies a significant proportion of the world’s natural resources, including 20% of the planet’s oxygen. But deforestation is threatening the Amazon’s role as the “lungs of the world,” as well as the supply of many things we take for granted, such as medicines, plants, chocolate, and nuts.

Fundação Amazonas Sustentável (FAS) was set up to help the people who live along the Amazon’s riverbanks.

In 2015, SAP donated SAP BusinessObjects Lumira to provide real-time data visualizations of FAS’s programs. FAS can now provide a snapshot of vital data to the communities it serves, better budget resources, and prioritize investments, creating more efficient and effective programs for the 40,000 people it supports.

To combat the damages caused by climate change, SAP is using digitization to help our customers increase their overall resource productivity and transform their businesses to reduce carbon outputs. Striving to lead by example, we have created a goal to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions back to the levels of 2000 by 2020.

At SAP we are working to reduce CO2 emissions through three primary approaches: increasing

operational efficiency combined with innovative approaches to the way we do things, purchasing high-quality renewable electricity certificates, and investing in high-quality carbon credits. We have also tied our business strategy of shifting to the cloud to our environmental strategy, creating a completely “green cloud” by purchasing 100% renewable electricity certificates. All compensation by CO2 offsets is focused on projects that improve the environment and at the same time the livelihoods of rural communities.
