Proposal

1. How the Organization was created and what are the types of activities it provides:

The principal motivation to have started this group is to help the financially backward rural communities through the fostering of education and health awareness.

Problems:

Parents being uneducated, studies of the child are completely ignored as they prefer their children to be child labour

Lack of an academic atmosphere and poverty stop the children from studying at home

Lack of nutritious food, lack of health and hygiene and adherence to superstition result in very high child mortality.

A complete lack of a value based society and ignorance of Indian culture among the youth in the community

SKB was founded to address these social evils. Education enhances culture and slowly brings about a positive change in society. Mother being the nucleus of the family can build a cultural base and in the long term help the society create a well balanced atmosphere.

One of the highlights of SKB's efforts is providing children with a better quality of life is the introduction of basic nourishment at schools they run. Prior to 1991-92, farmers at Kalyanpith, used to give mahua tabs and even country liquor (which are known to curb hunger) to their children in the morning before they went for coaching. They did this because they did not have any money to provide the most basic of breakfasts nourishments most of us take for granted. This stimulated SKB to start a fund raising drive which helped them collect funds, initially they used this to provide the children with biscuits, but the endeavour proved so successful that by 1994 they had enough funds to provide children with milk.  Today the drive has reached a level where SKB can provide the children with a weekly menu where the children are provided with milk for 3 days and with fruit, barley and molasses and fruit for the other 3.

2. Number of administrative and field staff:

Administrative Staff: In the office – 16, Project Co-ordinaton – 15Teaching Staff: 47 (includes all student volunteers)

Most of the teaching staff are students who are also beneficiaries of SKB under their higher education program. So in that sense there is some kind of self-sustenance.

3. A brief description of the long term objectives of the organization:

3

Page 4: Sarada Kalyan Bhandar – Project Proposal

Extending financial assistance to needy metirorious students of rural areas for their higher education including Medical, Engineering, Technical and Vocational training through the Higher Education Project

Improving education in the backward communities from Nursery to Degree courses.

Taking Care of destitute children. Encouraging education for women in backward areas Improving Health care of rural children and women under the Child Health Care

Mission and Rural Health Awareness Program Eradicating illiteracy Encouraging independence of women through the Women Self Independence

Promoting Scheme Encouraging the girl child through the Girl Child Efficiency Development Scheme Encouraging needy children through the Child Welfare Project Developing a value based society

5. Brief Description of any previous projects the organization has undertaken:

Tutoring: To assist children attending various schools in keeping up with their class-mates

Serving as School: For children at the nursery level, there are no schools in the vicinity. Also many do not go to chool due to financial constraints, low quality of the schools and the long distances to the Government Schools.

Providing an enabling environment: Distributing snacks, Clothing, study materials etc. for primary level children. Encouraging patients to send their children to school.

Providing medical care to the children of these villages: Regular preventive health measures. Regular health check-ups and referral to the Government

Hospital in necessary cases.

Activities of Higher Education Project and Women Efficiency Promoting Scheme:

The other important aspect of SKB is its Higher Education Program. Under this program, meritorious students who are in financial need are given a scholarship enabling them to study at universities and colleges. These students are sometimes from the villages aforementioned or from other rural areas, mostly, but not limited to Midnapore. There are around 470 students who are given financial assistance (2001). As a matter of policy, SKB does not provide all the funds they need and expects them to earn some money. This enables SKB to reach out to more deserving young minds. These students come back to SKB as tutors for the Child Welfare Program, or as regular donors. Many such students are now successfully placed in life as doctors, professors, teachers, scientists, engineers etc.

Students coming out of the Child Welfare Program are expected to be recipients of the Higher Education Program as well.

4

Page 5: Sarada Kalyan Bhandar – Project Proposal

Under the Women Efficiency Promoting scheme, deserving girls have been fully sponsored for higher education. The goals of this project are: To spread women education, create self-independence among women. To Establish that women are not to be treated as second class citizens. In a

poor country like India, women can support men in various aspects and thereby contribute meaningfully to the socioeconomic structure of the society.

Increase literacy among women. Eradicate social evils like early marriage, rape, torture, abuses etc. To make women aware of their rights and laws existing in their favour

Mousumi Manna, Sabita Jana & Bhaswati Mukherjee came to SKB after completing their schooling when their parents were contemplating an early marriage for them. Thanks to the efforts of SKB they now have a strong foothold today. Mousumi Manna secured first class in Maths both in her Under Graduate & Post Graduate studies, was selected by Govt. of West Bengal for Teachership, Sabita Jana is now at B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre, Kolkata after completing B.Sc. Hons in Nursing and Bhaswati Mukherjee is in National Thermal Power Corporation as an electrical engineer.

6. Describe location, current conditions (number of schools, population):

Currently children of nine villages are distributed under three centres. There are 542 (nearly 255 of them girls) children. They are currently being tutored under open skies or trees due to lack of infrastructure.

Baisakhpally Centre: This centre covers one village with no built up accommodation. The center runs from 4 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Villagers share their cottages for remedal coaching. This centre usually caters to about 70 children from nursery to class X. There is no school building where the coaching can be conducted outside the school scheduled hours.

Rangamati Centre: This centre covers 3 villages – Bhagabatipally, Rangamati and Pakhijapally with 122 children from Nursery class to Class Viii in the evening from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Half of the classes are conducted in three rooms and a verandah spared by the adjacent primary school. It is difficult to carry on classes during the rain and in summer because of the scorching sun. Classes in winter are shortened due to lack of sunlight.

Gabnala Centre: This centre covers four villages – Khejurdanga, Nchu Gope, Hamarpata and Gabnala with 270 children from Nursery to Class VIII. The entire centre here is conducted under banyan trees and on a cemented platform made for paddy drying by the villagers. Here morning sessions run from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

SKB also has a two storied office building in the town of Midnapore, which is far from the villages. This building houses a library of over 2000 books. There is a computer as well which is mostly used for office work.

5

Page 6: Sarada Kalyan Bhandar – Project Proposal

In response to an appeal by SKB, the Government of West Bengal has granted 0.33 acres of land on which education and health care programs can be conducted at a central location within commutable distance for all children. The estimate for construction of this building is around USD 58,000. Children from all the eight villages can come to this place. They have now fenced this land and have a platform here so that classes from V to VIII can be conducted. A ninth village, Indirapally has also been inducted because it s adjacent to this plot of land. Note that the above mentioned centres (points a to c) are partly defunct because they are now using this plot of land for ther classes. They are conducting classes here just to show the Government that they are using the land and are interested in it. SKB runs the risk of losing the plot unless construction starts soon.

7. What is the goal of the project (describe background of the children, what changes this project aims to bring about in the current conditions:

To construct the first floor of the Child Welfare Project building for SKB. The Project reaches out to underprivileged children. To give a background of the project:

The Child Welfare Project was instituted in 1989 as a response to the disastrous pass rates at the school exams in the area. Initially the project started in an open paddy field and was situated for a while under either its auspices or under the roofs of villagers. The school was also at the mercy of the vagaries of nature, the scorching sun interspersed with torrential rain  liable to hamper the enthusiasm of the most passionate student. But the hard work put in by SKB paid off, the project is now a proper institution which has shown record performances not only in terms of exam results (pass rates have improved from 33% to 98% over the lifetime of the project) but also the all round development of the children who are benefited by the project.

Highlights of the project so far:

Soumitra Mait and Soumik Sar  - students of a backward community from Baisakhpally were selected by the Foundation for Excellence Inc, CA USA were selected for Scholarships due to high excellence in their academic results - they were students in the Child Welfare Project

8. Beneficiaries of the project (how many children, number of girls / boys, age and other demographics, and other relevant details:

Dr. Kartik Ghosh an SKB product of a very impoverished family went on to complete his Ph.D from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai then went to Maryland for his post doctoral research and is now associate professor at MSW. There are a number of such stories of people overcoming desperate odds to come to terms with their potential. Point is more and more children in the area are now no longer shackled by the occupation of their families, they are discovering a world filled with limitless opportunities where the only constraint is their hard work, attitude and natural ability (all of which are being optimised due to SKB's untiring efforts) and not that one is from a godown coolie's, rickshaw puller's or a brick field worker's family or a woman born to a poor family.

9. Details of Funding Requirements:

Total remaining construction expenses as described by SKB in May 2004:$31,971

Amount sent to them for construction purposes, since:$10,000 (sent through Asha Mid-Hudson Valley, May 24, 2004)$2,626 (part of check posted Oct 27, 2004)

Amount yet to be raised: $19,345

The initial request came in 2001 to construct the building which was to comprise of 2 groundfloor wings. The estimated cost of the project then was $ 56,000. Of this Asha NYC NJ was able to send $ 20,000. Using these funds the trust was able to build only one wing on the ground floor.

Subsequent to the completion of this wing, the trust decided it to be a better idea to build a floor above the existing ground floor wing since that would give more space for the children in terms of play or other recreational activities. So now the revised estimates are $ 31,971 of which they SKB has already received $ 12,626 of funds. Of the remaining $ 19,345 estimated to be raised through WAH, Asha NYC/NJ can raise $ 10,000 with the balance coming from the Yale Asha Chapter.

20. General Secretary’s Report : 2002-2003

To Quote Swami Vivekananda – “ The national Ideals of India are Renunciation and service. Intensify her in those channels and rest will take care of itself.”

Worship-Love-Service with dedication are all terms carrying the same sense. We differently interpret them and behave in the manner we want to. The profile of a society will change if the inner significance of these three vibrant words be understood and worked out in the context of its true meaning. The gospel of new age is to give shelter and service to the suffering humanity from the curse of poverty and distress, frustration and depression, panic and growing tension prevailing in the ambit of the country. We need to revive the rich heritage of India and scavenge out everything that tarnishes the image of our country. We need an excellent pick up to finalize our track to run fast keeping in view the speedy motion of the Global scenario.

We are to restructure the entire society where ninety percent of the population lives in darkness, poverty, ill health and illiteracy. The vital force of the country lies in the strength of youth, women and children of rural India. The entire profile of the country cannot be changed all on a sudden but compassion towards the distressed and faithfulness towards our duty and service, not individually but collectively can be launched to bring change in the society.

Sarada Kalyan Bhandar is stepping in its 20th year. Its motto has always been very specifically crystallized through its range of activities in various fields for youth, women and children of backward rural area.

The indepth study of the pathos of poor meritorious youth, exploration in the life of child asset and awareness of the helpless condition of women community inspired a group of likeminded educated ladies to work for the underprivileged in the field of Education, Health and Social awareness.

We have received unsolicited support from our patrons, sponsors, donors, well-wishers and friends spontaneously which has inspired us to work more vigorously for the cause. Their inspiration is a remarkable indication of public awareness towards the downtrodden of the society and undoubtedly a tremendous tribute paid by the socially aware people to the movement for the helpless community. The true excellence of what has been achieved so far by this organization in these nineteen years is that we could reach the remote corners of the villages and create immense hope in the minds of the villagers for the betterment of their children; we could create a positive faith among youth community that their talent will not be wasted for lack of funds; we could create confidence and conviction among the woman community coming in touch with us that they are the nucleus of the family and the society too.

In 1984, Sarada Kalyan Bhandar was registered at Midnapore Sub Registrar’s office with a fixed fund of Rs.5,100/- and a working capital of Rs.1,000/-. At that time we sponsored the education of five college bond girls assuring Rs.50/- only per month

10

Page 11: Sarada Kalyan Bhandar – Project Proposal

for their higher studies. We had then ten sponsors and few potential donors. Since then the Trust is enjoying the benefit of 12A and 80G of the Income Tax Act and also is registered under FCRA by the Home Ministry, Govt. of India.

Today the organization holds a fixed fund of Rs.17 lakh 28 thousand 4 hundred one and Rs. 1 lakh 25 thousand is the working capital per month. The total asset value of the organization is Rs. 30 lakh 67 thousand 4 hundred twenty-five and sixty-five paise including land & building. Twelve Patrons, 206 Sponsors, few potential donors and 837 beneficiaries are with us now.

Books of Accounts are being audited by Chartered Accountants, D. Desarkar & Co., Midnapore. I profusely thank Mr. Dhananjoy Desarkar for his able guidance.Necessary Reports and Returns are regularly submitted to various concerns as scheduled.

SKB is run by a Board of Trustees whom the overall management of the organization is entrusted. A seven membered managing committee with a well-guarded constitution helps the organization grow steadily.

Currently Sarada Kalyan Bhandar is working on Five Projects.

Higher Education Project provides financial assistance to needy meritorious students for continuing their studies from higher secondary to under graduate & post graduate studies including Medical, Engineering and the like technical and vocational streams. 385 students are under this project and awaiting enrollment of new entrants for the recent publication of Secondary and Higher Secondary results. Financial support to them ranges from Rs.150/- to Rs.1,500/- per month besides books, other subsidiary educational and medical assistance. During the financial year 2002-03, Rs.6 lakh 27 thousand 7 hundred twenty-one and fifty paise is spent for the students under Higher Education Project. A small library with 3 thousand 2 hundred seventy-three books support their academic need.

Various competitions, quiz, seminars and symposiums are arranged year round. Eminent educationists are invited as speakers in the seminars for encouraging the young talents. They also participate in the relief programme with full enthusiasm during flood calamity and distribution of clothing to the poor community conducted by Sarada Kalyan Bhandar.

Several Memorial Prizes are introduced by some of our well-wishers for the brilliant academic performance of our students.

The second major project is Child Welfare. Under this scheme, nine villages – Baishakhipally, Gabnala, Khejurdanga, Nichugope, Hamarpata, Bhagabatipally, Pakhijapally, Rangamati and Indirapally are included covering 452 children with 20 orphans. These children receive free regular remedial coaching for improvement of their studies from Nursery to Higher Secondary level. Physical training, yoga, drawing and music classes are conducted as part of their daily routine for developing their total personality. Study materials, uniform, winter clothing, light Tiffin, milk and fruits are given to children regularly up to primary level. It is mandatory for all local students under our Higher Education project to extend free rural service to these children at Kalyanpith. 56 such student tutors are engaged

11

Page 12: Sarada Kalyan Bhandar – Project Proposal

as teachers in the child project. One project In-charge, two lady Supervisors and six-shift In-charge are overall responsible for day-to-day running of its activities. Children are showing wonderful results in their school examinations. Percentage of success this year is 96.2. Annual function and sports are arranged every year for their encouragement. Health Care Programme for children started in 1999. Regular health measures including supply of medicine, weekly check up etc. are routine work. Dr. B. S. Dash & Dr. Ruma Das are visiting Kalyanpith twice a week for regular treatment of children. I am really grateful to them for their honorary service. In addition, health awareness camps are organized this year in collaboration with Rural Development Association, Midnapore.

The year 2003 is a milestone for Child Welfare Project. We have been able to complete the construction of Child Welfare Project Building, Kalyanpith, with the contribution made especially by Asha For Education – NYC/NJ Chapter, Mr. Sudipta K Ghosh, CA, Dipu Ghosh & Dr. Shamali Ghosh of Iceland, Mr. Naren & Rina Gupta, USA and generous contribution received from philanthropic individual donors of our land. The total cost of the building excluding land is Rs.20 lakh 39 thousand approx including a market loan of Rs.4 lakh.

I think it will be very much pertinent for me to place here my appeal to all our well-wishers and friends to free me from the burden of loan that I am carrying with stress. I wish to place on records my sincere appreciation for the suppliers of the constructional work who have given immense support to me without giving any pressure to clear their dues during construction.

It was on 4th May 2003 that the Building was dedicated to Her Holiness Sri Sri Sarada Devi by Pravrajika Satyaprana Matajee, Sannyasini of Sri Sarada Math & The Secretary of their branch center Ramakrishan Sarada Mission at Thakurnagar, Purba Medinipur.

Mr. M.V. Rao IAS, Hon’ble District Magistrate, Midnapore inaugurated the building. The ceremony was presided by Prof. Ananda Deb Mukhopadhyay, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Vidyasagar University in a solemn atmosphere.

I am very much thankful to the Authorities of Centre for Advancement of Higher Education, Midnapore for providing us water from their deep tube well for constructional work.

I profusely thank Hon’ble District Magistrate, Mr. Rao for making provision of drinking water in the campus of Kalyanpith within such a short span of time without which it would have been very difficult for us to conduct child welfare programme there. All the children of different villages are brought under one roof in the new Child Welfare Building of Kalyanpith. We intend to make it a role model Institution. The total expenditure on children of Kalyanpith during the financial year 2002-2003 is Rs.5 lakh 26 thousand 2 hundred thirty-two and ten paise.Child Welfare Project is mainly supported by Asha for Education - New York / New Jersy Chapter, India Friends Association LA, Street Children International New York, Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Dakshineswar, Kolkata and few well wishers from India and Abroad.

12

Page 13: Sarada Kalyan Bhandar – Project Proposal

Our third project is Women Self Independence Promoting Scheme which covers the overall expenditure of 10 lady students spending Rs.70 thousand 2 hundred ninety during the financial year. Aim of this project is to spread women education, prepare them for economic stability, save waste of talents, eradicate social evils like early marriage, torture and other women atrocities and finally make them aware of their rights and laws existing in their favour.Nineteen women camps are organized this year for population education, childcare, family planning, health education and awareness on legal rights of women. Tremendous response encouraged the organizers and the Rural Development Authorities who collaborated with us in this matter.Gymnasium and scriptural classes for ladies are also conducted every week.

Girl Child Efficiency Development Scheme takes the overall responsibility of a girl child from class IV. This project in long term will contribute meaningfully to develop confidence and stability from girl child to womanhood. Rs. 19 thousand 6 hundred forty-four is spent on nine children.

All outstation students under higher education project are bound to participate in our fifth project Literacy Drive Programme during two vacations in a year. It will create a long time achievement in fighting illiteracy.

Our fund source is only public donation. We need funds for running the projects as well as administrative infrastructure. Under the present global scenario and keeping in mind the increasing number of beneficiaries, sponsor circle and potential donors need to be extended. We live in a society where large section of student community squanders for funds for their education, we live in a society where children suffer from malnutrition and early mortality due to poverty and lack of awareness, we live in a society where helpless women need rehabilitation through income generating scheme.

I would like to express my grateful thanks to all our patrons, members, sponsors, friends and well-wishers for their spontaneous support, compassion and tender feelings towards this organization. Their deep emotional identification is our asset. The mission of Sarada Kalyan Bhandar is to dedicate selfless service to the poor, the helpless and the backward. In this context, it will be apt to quote the immortal words of Swami Vevekananda “ the only God to worship is the human soul. If I cannot worship in that, no other temple will be of any advantage.”

Friends, let us join our hands and try to shape a model society so that we can at least bring a little difference in some lives. Let Sarada Kalyan Bhandar be a trusted name in this work now and ever.
