U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGYSOLAR DECATHLON

The 2013 Solar Decathlon is an international collegiate competition that involves 20 teams from across the world to design and build a net-zero home. Extensive interdisciplinary collaboration was imperative for the project to develop and to meet all the goals required by the competition. Each semester, new team members worked diligently to meet required deliverables and to prepare for the competition that is to take place in Irvine, CA coming fall 2013.

The 2013 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon was an international collegiate competition that involved 20 teams from across the world to design and build competing net-zero homes. Each design was limited to 1000 square feet and an 18 feet high solar envelope. Extensive interdisciplinary collaboration was integral to team Kentucky/Indiana’s Pheonix House submission. Each semester, new team members worked diligently to meet stringent deliverables and prepare for the competition that took place in Irvine, CA in October 2013.

BUILDING BETTER COMMUNITIESMODELING URBAN FORM

Building Better Communities (BBC) is an immersive learning program at Ball State University that aims to provide students with hands-on experiences that improve local communities. Modeling urban form, an architecture specific BBC course, was a collaborative living building challenge that attempted to develop idealized, sustainable communities. The development process involved research of precedent studies as well as economic and environmental metric calculations. The major goal of the project was to provide a final visual and measurable example of a sustainable community.

The Cooper Lighting Source Awards is an annual lighting design competition that seeks to discover new design solutions for Cooper products. Any new or existing project could be used as the canvas for Cooper fixtures. A private studio in a mixed-use Chicago loft was selected for the challenge. The loft, designed with brutalist and deconstructivist architecture as the inspiration, allowed for the creative use of fixtures to emphasize the unique architectural details of the defined spaces.

The ASID Repurpose for Today national student competition 2012 called for the creative use of architecture and design to help address current social crises. Rubble Revival sought to address the issues of crime and societal disintegration that exist in Gary, IN. Majora Carter, an urban revitalization strategist from New York, and Richard Daley, former mayor of Chicago helped inspire the goals of this project. Both Carter and Daley recognize the positive effect that “greening” communities can have on distressed areas. Channeling this mentality, the project focused on the reuse and revitalization of an abandoned baseball field on Gary’s south side. The field would become community gardens and the existing structures would transform into a food bank and other useful storage facilities.

Like a prism that disperses light and exposes the spectrum of colors, Luther Consulting, LLC tackles issues and exposes policymakers and practitioners to the spectrum of issues that affect the underrepresented and disadvantaged. With this concept and company philosophy in mind, the office transformed from an empty room to a fluid and functional organization of space. this open plan office design involved direct communication between the client and designer. The project was limited to the use of Steelcase products only with predetermined space allocations.
