Dear Judges:

My name is Sarah Leifeld. I have always had a natural appreciation for the outdoors, and I really enjoy caring for animals. More recently these interests have been leading toward a career in biology. My goal is to become proficient in the skills necessary to work in wildlife preservation. For my project I chose to learn the techniques of rock climbing.

After contacting Escalade Climbing Gym and meeting with its owner, I began taking the adult beginner class. The class, led by Mike Donisi, primarily focused on developing the fundamental skills and techniques of rock climbing. Before I began my classes, I wrote my research paper on the various types of climbing and the inherent risks each involves. Due to my research, I was able to enter the class with a basic climbing vocabulary and some understanding of the sport. The greatest barrier I faced, and perhaps the most valuable tool I will take from this experience, was learning how to fall. Because of this assignment I will always remember that is ok to fall as many times as it takes to succeed, and that the falling by no means diminishes your feat.

Rock climbing directly correlates to skills I would need in a wildlife preservation career. When performing field studies, the researcher must be ready to traverse all types of terrain. Rock climbing will be essential for this. Not only has this project taught me the technical aspects of rock climbing, but it has given me perseverance and determination, two skills that cannot be taught in a classroom. Such attributes will be vital to success in any career path.

When I first heard that I would have to do a senior project, I thought it would be a complete waste of time. I could not have been more wrong. I found a passion where I did not expect one. I gained life skills that will help me, not only through college, but in any career I choose. I am so grateful for this assignment, and grateful for having this opportunity to share it with you. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Sarah Leifeld
