Why I run for DFMC I ran my first Boston Marathon

starting at the back of the pack with the other “bandit” runners in 1995. Running my first marathon was exciting, but I was even more impressed with the charity runners who combined the personal fitness goal of training for a marathon with a commitment to helping others. A week after that first marathon, I put in a call to the DFMC office in hopes of joining an amazing group of people supporting an amazing medical institution.

History of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge

• Inspired by Michael Silverstein, then a Harvard freshman, who ran in memory of his friend, Seth, a brain tumor victim

• “Mike’s Run” caught the attention of Wayne and Delores Weaver as a means to involve many people in the crusade against cancer

• First DFMC team was organized in 1990

12 years with DFMC!!

Running for DFMC has been one of the more powerful and rewarding experiences of my life. I have had the opportunity to meet wonderful runners, volunteers, doctors, patients and their families over the years as we “train” through both the good and the bad times.

My patient partner, Denille Fedor• Denille was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 9. I was

first paired with her when she was 11. • Denille and I, and our families, shared a handful of years

together celebrating the DFMC accomplishments. • Denille moved on from the patient partner experience in

highschool. It was time for her to have fun as a healthy teenager!!

• Denille recently celebrated her 22nd birthday!!

Elizabeth Poirier

• My mother-in law has struggled with a variety of cancers over the years. Friends and family continue to be amazed at her strength, stamina and positive outlook.

• Elizabeth will celebrate her 66th birthday in May.

In Memory

Stetson Laronde was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks before his 7th birthday.

This brave little boy and his family faced this awful disease with courage, hope and lots of love. Sadly, Stetson lost his battle.

I have the honor of running in Stetson’s memory as well as sharing time with Stetson’s family who remind me that love endures all!
