Five main criteria need to be satisfied when installing an accumulator, and the positive check list must all be true for the accumulator to do its job.1. There must be enough water surface area in the accumulator for the release of steam to be within a reasonable velocity. If the take-off velocity is too high, excessive turbulence and water carryover might occur. A good rule of thumb is that the take-off velocity will be about right when the steam release rate (measured in kg/m2 per hour) is 100 times the absolute storage pressure in bar a.2. The evaporation capacity has to be enough to satisfy the overload condition for the period of time the overload exists. This depends on the water surface area and the allowable release rate of steam based on item 1 above.3. The accumulator can only supply a finite amount of steam over a finite period of time, and relies upon the fact that the boiler will run below capacity at off-peak loads and can recharge the accumulator in time for the next overload. This depends on the size of the overload and its duration, the time between overloads, the off-peak load and its duration, and the boiler capacity.4. There has to be enough volume of water in the accumulator to produce the required amount of flash steam during overload.5. The release rate of steam will fall as the accumulator pressure falls. The required release rate of steam has to be lower than the MIN allowable release rate at the end of the discharge cycle. If it is higher, the only real solution is to increase the size of the accumulator.

If it takes too long to recharge the vessel, consider the following:1. Reduce the off-peak demand, by shedding steam supplies to non-essential plant.2. Increase the boiler MCR by returning more condensate, utilising flash steam etc . . .3. If 2 & 3 cannot provide a solution, the accumulator principle will not work on this project. The only real solution is to add another boiler.
