Jeff graduated from the College ofAgriculture at the University ofSaskatchewan in 2006, and the WesternCollege of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. Hedid both mixed rural veterinary medicine andswine specialty practice before joining theVet Services Department at Olymel in Julyof 2013. He is currently the Animal WelfareChair for Olymel’s hog production inWestern Canada, performing regular herdhealth checks at the commercial units, andadministrates the CQA/ACA program.

Born in the Humboldt area, he worked inlarge hog production units after graduatinghigh school and in summers while atuniversity. He is actively involved in apurebred cattle operation with his brother.

Audrey completed her Bachelor degree inAgronomy, with a major in Animal Sciencesat Laval University in 2008. She later movedto Edmonton, Alberta to do a master'sdegree in swine reproduction.

In 2011, she began her professional careerwith Alberta Pork in Edmonton as ProvincialCoordinator for the CQA program, animalwelfare and biosecurity files.

In July 2014, Audrey joined the CanadianPork Council as National Food Safety andAnimal Care Programs Manager and hassince been developing the Canadian PorkExcellence Platform with multiple industrystakeholders.

A partner in Swine Health Professionals, Dr.Chappell’s work includes breeding stock andcommercial on-farm health monitoring;improving farm production parameters,CQA/ACA Validation and regulatoryinspection of export hogs.

Dr. Chappell works closely with the ManitobaPork Council to deliver national biosecuritystandards, is actively involved in creatingSDS Veterinary Data Analytics; and is alsopart of the national disease surveillancegroup. Focussing on disease surveillance ona farm level, Dr. Chappell looks at the linkbetween health and production parameters tomeasure the impact of disease.

Dr. Detmer completed her DVM, residency inpathology and PhD at the University ofMinnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine(2003, 2009 and 2011, respectively). Shejoined the faculty at the Western College ofVeterinary Medicine in 2011. In addition toswine pathology and diagnostic medicine, hermain area of expertise is influenza A virusesin swine.

Her research focus is surveillance of flu onfarms, particularly in the areas of viruscharacterization, movements of virusesbetween farms, and viruses at the human-animal interface. Other research workincludes PRRS virus infection at thematernal-fetal interface and Brachyspiracolitis.

ELLEN GODDARDCooperative Chair in Agricultural Marketingand BusinessUniversity of Alberta, Edmonton, [email protected]

Ellen previously worked at the Universitiesof Melbourne, Australia and Guelph. For 30years Professor Goddard’s research hasfocused on economic modeling of consumerbehaviour in domestic and internationalmarkets for food products (particularly meatand other livestock products) for policyanalysis purposes. She led a nationalresearch network on consumer demand forfood for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canadafor 10 years up until 2014.

Current research includes how people(farmers and the public) behave - includingresponses to food safety incidents,consumer demand for credence attributes,traceability and certification; responses tonew technologies in agriculture and the useof genetic technologies, antibiotics,hormones and vaccination in both pets andlivestock.

Curtiss Littlejohn has led CanarmAgSystem’s swine business unit for the pastfour years.

A pork producer for 30 years, he is apassionate industry advocate and has beeninvolved in Foreign Animal Disease, Trade,and animal welfare policies on provincial,national and international levels.

Ramon was born in Torreon Coahuila,Mexico and was the third generation involvedin farming. He obtained an AnimalHusbandry and Administration Degree inGuadalajara, Mexico. His first job was at anelk farm on the border between Californiaand Mexico. He moved to Edmonton in 2001and enrolled in “Business Management” atthe University of Alberta earning a Masters inAdministration. In 2003 he went to work forElite Swine Inc. in Strathmore, AB at a 3,000unit barn as a Breeding Supervisor.

He later joined Partners in Pork as aBreeding Supervisor and then becameAssistant Manager in the main barn 800 sowunit. He learned about Natural Mating and AIproduction with daily activities that includedextensive boar training, collection, semenprocessing and exposure to all breedingactivities.

In late 2011 Ramón was given the opportuni-ty to manage a 6,000 head finishing barn andthen in 2013 joined the Hypor Canada teamas AI Stud Manager at Green Hill, SK. In2016, he began providing technical servicebecoming the AI specialist for the Americas.

As Research Chair, Dr. Newkirk assists thefeed processing industry, crop commoditygroups, livestock industry and government indeveloping programs to create new valueadded opportunities for the agri-food sector. He is also the scientific leader of the CanadianFeed Research Centre.

Prior to joining the Uof S in 2015, Rex spent12 years at the Canadian International GrainsInstitute where he led a team that developedinnovative products and applications ofCanadian Ingredients and provided technicalmarketing support to buyers and processors ofCanadian Field Crops including pulses aroundthe globe.

Steve joined EMI analytics in May 2015 uponthe sale of his former business, ParagonEconomics, Inc. to EMI. His duties includeongoing analysis of hog and pork markets andassisting EMI Analytics clients (which nowinclude his former Paragon clients such as theNational Pork Board and National PorkProducers Council) in using his insights tosuccessfully manage their businesses.

His breadth of work in the pork industry isunique. As President of Paragon, hemonitored and analyzed cattle, beef andpoultry markets to meet the needs of hisdiverse set of clients. He served for 12 yearsas an author of The Daily Livestock Reportsponsored by CME Group, an e-Newsletterwhose circulation grew steadily following itsintroduction in 2003. He also writes a featurearticle for National Hog Famer’s WeeklyPreview E-Letter that focusses on economicissues in North America’s swine pork sector.

YOLANDE SEDDON, Ph.DAssistant ProfessorSwine Behaviour and WelfareWestern College of Veterinary Medicine Saskatoon, [email protected]

yolande conducts applied swine behaviourand welfare research covering all aspects ofswine production. Her previous researchincludes management of the gestating sow,economic evaluation of higher welfare sowhousing systems and pain behaviour inswine.

Her research goal is to contribute to thedevelopment of lasting solutions to welfarechallenges encountered in modern swineproduction. In her role at the WCVM shecontinues to work closely with the PrairieSwine Centre and is working to expand aresearch team to contribute scientificfindings on swine welfare.

Prior to joining the WCVM, yolande spentfour years as a research associate with thePrairie Swine Centre.

CHUCk SCHWARTAU, M.EdRegional Director - Southeast RegionUniversity of Minnesota ExtensionRochester, MN [email protected]

Chuck has a long Extension history workingas a livestock systems educator, with anemphasis in dairy for most of those yearsand workforce development andmanagement for about 15 years. For 24years he was based in various counties insoutheast Minnesota, and moved to theRochester Regional Office in 2004, where heis currently the Regional Director.

During the time he was teaching andadvising in workforce issues, he becamemore interested in the safety aspect of beingan employer. Michael has worked in the Canadian redmeat industry for over 37 years specializingin pork and beef sales, marketing, productdevelopment and education in both thedomestic and export marketplace.

He joined Canada Pork International (CPI) in2007 and currently manages both CPI(export) and Canada Pork (domestic) mar-keting programs and services for theCanadian pork industry.

Prior to joining CPI, he served as VicePresident, International Programs forCanada Beef Export Federation and heldsenior management positions with the BeefInformation Centre, Sunterra Meats andAlberta Pork Producers DevelopmentCorporation.

As President/CEO Lee is responsible forimplementing the corporation’s strategic planand overseeing the administration, fundingand on-going research programs in Nutrition,Engineering and Applied Ethology, as well asguiding the graduate student education andtechnology transfer objectives of the Centre.

Previously, as Manager of InformationServices for Prairie Swine Centre, Lee wasresponsible for all technical extension pro-grams at the Centre as well as demonstra-tion research projects.

Lee’s primary focus has been developingcommunications programs that allow thecommercial pork industry to adopt newtechnology and management proceduresquickly thus improving their ability tomaximize net income and addresssustainability issues.
