group of Old Boys of

St. Anselm’s College

got together a5er

the Second World

War through a

shared love of rugby.

Early playing facili'es and

ameni'es were primi've

and it wasn’t un'l the mid-

1950s that the club

relocated to its present

home here in Eastham

village.

Since 1947, the club has

produced a number of quality

rugby players. Aus'n Healey

would go on to win fi6y one

England caps and tour with

the Bri'sh and Irish Lions. In

the 1995-96 Five Na'ons

compe''on, Chris'an

Saverimu9o was capped

three 'mes for Ireland.

More recently, in 2002, Ben

Johnston, the No<ngham

player/coach, was capped

twice by England, whilst Chris

Pilgrim, has played for

Newcastle Falcons, Yorkshire

Carnegie and the Barbarians.

And, of course, erstwhile

coach, Simon Mason, who

was also capped three 'mes

by Ireland in the 1995-96 Five

Na'ons compe''on.

With the advent of first merit

tables and, now, league rugby,

many of our tradi'onal fixtures

have lapsed. The “Old” was

dropped from the name and

“Anselmians” 1st XV now

compete in the South

Lancashire/Cheshire Division

One. The 2nd (Crusaders) and

3rd (Mavericks) XVs play in

Division 3 South and Division 5

West, and the thriving mini and

junior sec'on is the envy of

many clubs.

Ravi Sibal recently became club

chairman with a specific brief to

prepare the club for the next

chapter in its history. Two key

elements to the club’s plans are

the development of younger

players and the building of a

new clubhouse which will set

the club on course to fulfil its

ambi'on of becoming the

premier spor'ng/social club in

Wirral and West Cheshire.

Anselmians remains a

vision of those young men

who began it all with the

simple wish:

Our Founding Players

NB haven’t started the season as

well as they would have hoped but

have played some tough fixtures to

date.

Last week saw a good home win against

Manchester Medics and I know they will be

keen to build on that success. Fixtures

between the teams are always keenly

contested and today will be no different .

Following a fine home win against league

leaders LSH, Saints travelled to Se6on last

week and showed character to come back

from a 14-5 half 'me deficit to take a bonus

point 25-14 win. Saints will need to play

be9er this week as a determined NB will ask

tough ques'ons.

Andy again shuffles his pack this week as

debutant ScoN Southwell plays at hooker.

Sco9 is a talented young player who has been

part of the Sale development pathway and

recently completed his studies at Wirral

Grammar School before moving on to Edge Hill

Uni. Kellum Friday starts in the 2nd

row alongside

Josh Jones, whilst the effec've back row of the 2

Nicks and Stu Costello con'nues. Harry Southern

fills the wing slot whilst the talented midfield trio

of Andy C, Charlie & Sammy con'nues to bed in,

Charlie having scored 5 tries in his last 2 games.

Congratula'ons to Sammy Russell and his partner

Jess who have just welcomed baby Parker into

the world, we’re hoping they’re both down today,

welcome to Saints .

Also congratula'ons to Mario and his fiancée

who have just returned from a recent holiday to

his Italian homeland engaged to be married.

Proposing on a gondola in Venice no less! (Your

mates will be the judges of whether that’s a tad

cheesey Ed.)

The Crusaders (2nd

xv) posted a fine 10-8 score

last week against a determined Aldwinians team.

This week Neil & Alan take The Crusaders on the

road to play Broughton Park.

Tim and The Mavericks have had a couple of

tough weeks against strong opposi'on, but they

remain near the top of the table with all to play

for.This week they make the short trip to face

Oxton Parkonians in a local derby .

The senior colts maintain solid progress, even

a6er losing narrowly to table toppers Southport

last week. Unfortunately the week before, their

fixture was abandoned due to a serious injury to a

West Park player to whom we all wish a speedy

recovery, and wish him well. This week Sean takes

the boys over to play Collegiate (2pm KO Sunday

Aigburth Rd , Liverpool L19 3QF).

I have now been at the club for 3

months and it is my pleasure to

report on a turnaround in all aspects

of club life at Anselmians RUFC.

Following an excellent pre-season and the re-

introduc'on of a selec'on commi9ee, all three

teams have had excellent starts to the 2017-18

season. I am also very pleased to say that the

senior colts, due to the hard work of Sean Nolan

and Ian Braithewaite, are turning out a side every

Sunday. This bodes well for the future of the club

and the con'nua'on of younger players aspiring

to play 1st

XV rugby at Malone Field.

A6er a disappoin'ng season for the 1st

XV last

'me around, it was very important to get off to a

strong start, with performances being my priority

rather than results. However against Southport

and Tyldesley I got both, 2 totally different types

of games in which we proved the defence had

improved vastly from last season.

The West Park game brought the demons back,

but the LSH game showed me where we are

mentally and although a long way to go, there is

plenty to be excited about.

Away at Se6on is always a tough place to go,

although not our most complete performance,

through hard work and more importantly belief,

another 5 point win was achieved. We currently

lie 4th

in the League, with some very compe''ve

games ahead, I firmly believe that with con'nued

effort, intensity and honesty we can compete in

the top half of the League.

The introduc'on of Jamie Kimpton (DOR), Andy

O`Connor (1st xv manager), Ka'e Crowley

(physio) and Andy “Pouchie” Powell (assistant

coach) has helped this team to evolve very quickly

and I cannot thank them all for their unbelievable

support.

We now have a selec'on commi9ee on a Tuesday

a6er training, they have already gone on into the

early hours of Wednesday morning!! The teams are

selected a6er match reports from the previous

week and all players are individually discussed as

to their development either up or down the teams.

The feedback from Crusaders duo Neil Redfearn

and Alan Deer, also the Mavericks Tim Woodward

and Andy Smith has been invaluable for players

moving up and down the teams. This has definitely

created a new spirit in the club, with all teams very

much suppor'ng each other and players pushing

each other in training.

At the end of a very frustra'ng 2016-17 season for

club captain Nick Hearn, I would have understood

if he had wanted to step down. However a6er my

first mee'ng with Nick, there was no other man I

would have wanted to lead this team into a new

era of Anselmians rugby both on and off the pitch.

He is an Anselmian through and through, leading

his players and club magnificently in all aspects of a

community rugby club, a big well done to Nick and

it is a pleasure to work with you.

Also into the firing line came Liam Sadler, as vice-

captain, he stood up and asked to be a part of the

managing team. His a<tude in both training and

match days have been inspira'onal, leading by

example, having to play in many posi'ons already,

but always giving 100%.

On Saturday the 23rd

September, a

date that will live long in our

memories, Saints welcomed the

League leaders Liverpool St Helens to

Malone field.

Liverpool who had begun their season with 3

bonus point wins were looking to maintain their

100% record against a Saints team that had

started the season brightly with two wins from

two, before faltering and losing at West Park the

last week. Over the pre match lunch, one of

Liverpool supporters explained that their success

was based around their extremely large pack but

that if they had a weakness it was that up

against a talented side that could run the ball

they could struggle with their mobility. He must

have been psychic.

Saints, who were playing uphill and against the

breeze in the first half, began brightly and on 5

mins they were awarded a penalty under the

Liverpool posts. A certain 3 points were gambled

when Saints ran a quick penalty that

unfortunately ended in a knock on. From the

resul'ng scrum Liverpool cleared their lines with

a kick to the halfway line. A couple of

breakdowns later and Liverpool’s talented scrum

half Wilson broke clear, evaded a couple of

tackles and went in under the posts for a ty that

was duly converted to give Liverpool a 7-point

lead. Saints had gone from a penalty under the

opposi'on posts to conceding a try within the

space of 2 mins.

It was looking ominous for Saints and the

supporters and alumni on the line, who have

witnessed some below par performances in

recent seasons, braced themselves but they

need not have worried. From the restart saints

won possession and following a line out on the

right hand side of the Liverpool half, the ball was

moved swi6ly by the Saints backs across the full

width of the pitch stretching the Liverpool

defence and crea'ng space for Costello to go

over in the corner to make the score 5-7.

On 15 mins saints lost Meredith due to a head

injury so Sadler moved to scrum half and Hough

came on in the centre. Saints had started

brightly but with the changes they appeared to

go up a gear. On 22 mins yet another flowing

backs move saw Saints go over in the le6 corner

only for the ref to rule it out for a forward pass.

Three mins later another flowing move saw

Saints again on the Liverpool line only for the

final pass to go to ground. It was now all saints

and how the score was s'll 5 – 7 to Liverpool was

a mystery that Sherlock Holmes couldn’t have

solved. It took un'l the 30th

minute for Saints to

convert the pressure into points and go into the

lead. From a line out the ball was moved across

the backs before Russell at centre kicked through

into the Liverpool corner. The Liverpool full back

gathered the ball and looked up to see his

opposite number Taylor gleefully bearing down

on him. His hasty a9empt to kick the ball away

was efficiently charged down by Taylor who

followed up to score and then for good measure

kicked the conversion from the touchline. 12 -7

to Saints.

The dam had now been breached and the torrent

that was Anselmians descended on Liverpool.

On 33 mins, the Saints line-out that had been a

concern over the previous three weeks but, in

this game, was a strength due to excellent

throwing in by A**E****s, produced yet again

quality ball and the ball was moved across the

width of the pitch and then, because they could,

they moved it back again before Hough was put

over in the corner for his second try.

On 38 mins a Saints penalty miss had the

supporters se9ling for a half 'me lead of 17 – 7

but Saints players had other ideas. In this mood

they weren’t se9ling for anything. Saints caught

the restart; Cummings was put away on the right

and looked certain to score un'l he was tackled

on the line. Liverpool won their lineout and

cleared the lines with a kick into Saints territory

but you could almost hear the collec've

Liverpool groan as Bramhall caught the ball in

play and 30 seconds later Liverpool were

conceding a penalty under their posts. The

supporters didn’t even have 'me to comment

before a quick penalty saw Costello go over to

give Saints a 22 -7 lead at half .me.

In previous seasons, half 'me has been an excuse

for some supporters to head to the bar for brandies

and to stay there. No one was leaving this match. In

fact the crowd seemed to grow as word spread

something special was happening at Malone field.

Saints began the second half just as they had

finished the first and any thoughts of a Liverpool

rally were put firmly out of mind when on 48 mins a

disrupted Liverpool scrum on the halfway line

resulted in their scrum half Wilson chasing a

bobbling ball back towards his own line with a

smiling Nick Lamming breathing down his neck just

daring him to pick it up. He eventually obliged and

was duly cla9ered. The loose ball was nonchalantly

flipped up to the blur that was Cummings as he

raced by and who seemed certain to get the try that

would have capped an excellent performance

before he was pulled down short of the line. No

ma9er, he calmly presented the ball to the

following support which must have seemed to

Liverpool as consis'ng of the en're Anselmians

team and Hough went over in the corner. 27 –7.

Credit to Liverpool though as you would have

expected of the league leaders, they kept playing

and on 60 mins a series of pick and goes from their

pack produced a converted try to make the score 27

- 12. Saints did not seem to no'ce they had

conceded a try and just carried on regardless.

Two mins later another swarming Anselmians a9ack

saw A**E***s go clear and with the Liverpool line

one yard away and not a Liverpool player in sight he

appeared to drop the ball. It made no difference,

the ref had spo9ed an earlier Liverpool

infringement and Taylor slo9ed the penalty to make

the score 30 -12. Some sort of try Euphoria was

taking hold of Saints and from the restart they

moved the ball downfield and Hough went over for

his hat trick. 37 -12. In the 70th

minute Liverpool

produced another forwards try to make the score

37-19 but their efforts were in vain.

No one would have blamed saints for seeing the

game out but the Saints deluge had now become a

Tsunami and on 75 mins Lamming was stopped on

the line but like clockwork the ball was recycled and

Russell went over in the corner. 42 -19.

S'll there was more to come with the Saints coach

shou'ng for 50 straight from, yes you have guessed

it a restart, saints moved down the field and Taylor

went over to score his second try which he duly

converted. Final score 49-19.

It was an incredible team performance. A special

men'on is due to the Saints pack. The Liverpool pack

consisted of a group of large powerful men who

were definitely no strangers to a pie. Personally, I

would only have run into them if I was driving

someone else’s 4 x 4 but 'me a6er 'me the Saints

pack led fearlessly by Nick Hearn stopped them in

their tracks.

At the breakdowns Saints were invariably first on the

ball with Lamming and the rest of the back row

winning several key penal'es as Liverpool were

penalised for holding on. The lineouts were

excep'onal and the scrums solid ensuring our group

of talented backs got the ball quickly and cleanly for

them to rip through the opposi'on. The Liverpool

scrum-half must have been wondering how every

ball he received seemed to have an Anselmians back

row a9ached to it.

Over the past few seasons the phrase “Men against

boys” has o6en been used by the Anselmians Alumni

(old members) to describe heavy defeats at the

hands of opponents. I think what best sums up this

performance is a comment from the Liverpool camp

a6er the match “Congratula'ons on a superb

display. It was men against boys out there today.”

So congratula'ons the MEN of Anselmians and on

behalf of the supporters thanks for a thoroughly

enjoyable day

P.S. In an a6er match interview A**E****s revealed

why he dropped the ball. “When I am under cover I

don’t like to draw a9en'on to myself so I didn’t

want my name listed in the try scorers and please

don’t use my name in the match report.”

Despite the exorbitant tunnel fees and the heavy morning rain, Anselmian supporters, no doubt sDll giddy with excitement from the previous game against LSH, turned out in force for this match.

The morning rain had turned to drizzle and the pitch looked in good condi'on. The Anselmian team was much the same as last week with only two forced changes to the squad. Bramhall broke his hand in training on Thursday and John Clark was unavailable so hopes were high amongst the travelling throng for another impressive win.

Se6on kicked off to Saints who secured possession and a high kick down the field from Cummings saw Se6on knock on giving Saints a scrum on the halfway. Ominously, at the first scrum, the referee awarded Se6on a penalty which they chose to run and a dangerous break from their centre threatened the Saints line un'l a Se6on knock on relieved the pressure. The kick to touch on the halfway gave Se6on their first lineout from which their forwards surged down to the Saints 25 and secured the penalty which Se6on failed to convert. From the restart, Se6on caught the ball, moved it effec'vely down field and despite saints best a9empts to resist the Se6on advance, went over for the try which was duly converted. 7 – 0, 9mins.

In a similar fashion to last week, Saints responded immediately to the Se6on try with a score of their own and it was a quality one. Cummings kicked the restart deep with Lamming following up and pu<ng in a great tackle to ensure Se6on could not make ground so their only op'on was to kick from their 25. Costello caught the kick and made ground un'l he was stopped. The ball was taken on by the Saints forwards and at the next breakdown a flick pass from Sadler put Nick Hearn away on the le6 who ghosted past the Se6on cover before drawing the full back and releasing a perfectly 'med pass to Costello who went over in the corner. The conversion was missed so on 12 mins (7 – 5).

The away supporters were now hoping to see Saints build on this and dominate the game but

unfortunately as they say in Wales this try turned out to be the only sheep in the field. (The Welsh

don’t actually say this but the English think that

any sentence that contains the words Welsh and

sheep is hilarious so I decided to throw one in).

Se6on dominated the first half with Saints conceding numerous penal'es at the set piece. On 28 mins a Se6on penalty kick earned them a lineout on the Saints 5. Se6on won possession and as the drive came to a halt and the ball went to ground, Ant Evans got a boot to the ball only for the referee to rule him offside. Deciding that Ant had prevented a certain Se6on try, the referee yellow carded him and then for good measure awarded Se6on the penalty try (14 – 5). On 30 mins, Saddler re'red injured and the versa'le and much appreciated Harry Southern came on at scrum half. The last 10 mins of the half produced more Se6on pressure and one decent break from Cummings that led to nothing so the score at half 'me remained 14 – 5 to Se6on. Given the amount of ball Se6on had enjoyed and the fact that Saints played the last 10 minutes with only 14 men it was a relief that the points difference was only 9.

It was during the half 'me team talk that one of the most fascina'ng moments of the day took place and it turned out to be a key one. The yellow card was the latest in a series of refereeing decisions par'cularly around the scrum that the travelling Saint’s con'ngent thought a tad unjust and so at half 'me the Saint’s coaching staff felt the need to discuss one or two of the finer points of the laws with the man in the middle. The moment I believe turned the game was when Pouchy approached the referee and just as I was expec'ng him to ques'on the referee’s parentage, his lack of knowledge and his blatant prejudice, Pouchy said and I quote, verba'm, “Excuse me Sir may I please ask you to have a look at the binding at the scrums“. The ref was that dumfounded at the politeness of the tone and the words that he actually stopped and listened. Pouchy went on “Their binding incorrectly sir if you could just look at it Sir. Thank you sir “. The ref nodded in amazement. I don’t think he had ever been treated with such respect. Guess what;

not only did we did not concede a penalty at the

scrums in the second half but we comfortably held our own ball. The front rows may argue that they sorted it out themselves but I say well done Pouchy.

The second half began and saints immediately went on the offensive. A Se6on high tackle gave Cummings a chance to kick for touch. Saints won the lineout and moved the ball across the backs. They made ground at pace and together with forward support they ensured that each 'me they were stopped the ball was efficiently and quickly recycled for the backs to con'nue their advance. Sam Russell as always showed great presence of mind during the a9ack always choosing the correct op'on between passing and going to ground. The move finished with Hough showing the pace that earned him a hat trick last week and going over the Se6on line. Taylor added the conversion to make the score 14 – 12 on 43 mins. 5 mins later, Se6on conceded a penalty that allowed Cummings to give Saints a line out on the Se6on 25. At the line out Saints were awarded another penalty which Taylor kicked to put Saints in the lead for the first 'me in the match 14 – 15.

Saints were now beginning to win possession and with the scrums and lineouts looking more secure the effec'veness of the Se6on forwards was diminishing as the half went on. On 57 mins another good Saints back move saw Saints nearly go over the Se6on line but the move ended in a scrum to Se6on. From the scrum, Se6on kicked to the halfway only to have the ball immediately carried back to them and then occurred the pivotal moment of the match. The ball was moved to the Se6on 25 where the Saints wing, Armstrong, failed to hold onto a pass pu<ng the ball to ground and enabling Se6on to grubber kick the ball up the middle to the halfway. For a moment, with the saints backs having to turn and chase, it looked like Se6on could recover their kick and score but Hough raced back towards his own line caught and went past the Se6on backs to drop on the ball and secure possession which Saints immediately used to launch another a9ack on the Se6on Line. This move saw Cummings intelligently kick into the try area on the le6 wing for Clayton to touch down and so instead of Se6on regaining the lead they had seen themselves go further behind. Saints lead 14-20 on 60 mins.

The penalty count in the second half, in sharp contrast to the first, was highly in favour of Saints and this combined with Saints pressure, now that the backs were seeing more of the ball, nullified the Se6on a9ack. For the next 15 mins Se6on showed spirit as they tried respond but their only move of

note ended in a Saints lineout as Armstrong put in an excellent tackle to take man and ball into touch. The match was finally put to bed on 75 mins when Kellum Friday single handily destroyed a Se6on ruck on the halfway line, picked up the ball and drove forward. Once in the hands of the backs it was moved out wide to the right and down to the Se6on 5 yard line where good Se6on defence temporarily halted the move. Saints quickly recycled and Southern passed inside to Hearn who looked certain to score un'l he was felled by a high tackle. Whether the ref saw it as a high tackle was immaterial as Southern picked up the loose ball, fed Cummings who threw a long pass to Hough on the le6 for him to go over in the corner for a bonus point try that took the score to 14 – 25. Se6on pushed hard in the last 5 mins for a score that would earn them a bonus point for keeping the score within 7. Right at the death, a6er a Se6on kick put the ball on the saints try line for their backs to chase, it looked like they might do it but Armstrong won the race to the ball, got a boot to it and the match ended 14 – 25 to saints.

In summary, to use that well known cliché it was a game of two halves. Se6on dominated the first half and should have been more points ahead for the possession they had. In the second Saints dominated scoring 20 unanswered points. Both sides were guilty of mistakes and wrong op'ons throughout. The most cri'cal factor in the game was the swing in the penalty count from the first half to the second. Why such a disparity between the half’s. Was it strange refereeing? Personally, I think it was just a case of the side that is going forward is more likely to win penal'es.

It was not the scin'lla'ng rugby from last week but Saints did produce 4 quality tries. Also an away win at Se6on a ground that has been the downfall of many a saint’s side is not to be underes'mated. As Pouchy would say “Excuse me sirs, please may I point out that we cannot be scin'lla'ng, exci'ng and fantas'cally entertaining every week. Some'mes you just have to win

hey have not had the best of starts, having

lost the first four games, although they would

point out that they have played four teams

out of the top six. Trips to Broughton Park

and Bowdon are never easy, although two

home defeats by Leigh and Glossop are a

cause for concern.

Anselmians, by contrast, have had their best

start since 2011 and will be confident a6er

the bonus point win last week at Se6on.

However, they should be cau'ous. In January

we lost 8-26 away and, exactly a year ago, we

were comprehensively beaten at Malone

Field 16-45.

We have to go back two years to find the last

Anselmian victory over the Seasiders. In

2015-16 season we prevailed 36-27, but on

the return fixture we contrived to lose in the

last minutes 23-24 having led un'l the last

five minutes.

Last season New Brighton finished 10th

whilst

we finished 11th

. In 2015-16, we finished 6th

and New Brighton were 7th

and we can

expect a close contest today.

New Brighton is another club with a long and

dis'nguished history, who, like Liverpool St.

Helens, West Park and Broughton Park,

found adjustment to the professional era

difficult. A6er some high profile difficul'es,

the club became and remains totally

amateur, an admirable stance in these

mercenary 'mes.

About New Brighton Football Club

The club was formed in 1875 and have been based at several grounds over the years. The club's present home is Hartsfield, situated in Moreton, Wirral, England. One of the most notable matches in the club's history was when they hosted a joint New Brighton / North of Ireland F.C. team to face the 1969 touring South African team. The South Africa na'onal team had ini'ally intended to play an Ulster fixture in Belfast, but when this was cancelled and the New Brighton game scheduled in its place. The Springboks won 22–6.

Notable players:

James Patrick Quinn (New Brighton, England and Bri'sh Lions) won his first cap for England against Wales on 16 January 1954 at Twickenham. He went on the 1955 Bri'sh Lions tour to South Africa playing twelve matches.

Andy Maxwell an Old Cadeian centre who graduated to New Brighton FC in the early 70’s before moving on to Headingley and 7 England caps, 1975-1978, before a serious knew injury ended his career prematurely.

Wade Dooley “The Blackpool Tower” played for England 55 'mes in the 1980’s whilst at Preston Grasshoppers. He had a spell at Fylde before seeing out his career at New Brighton.

John BasneN played on the wing New Brighton before turning to the other code where he was a key member of the successful Widnes team of the 1980’s. He represented Great Britain twice.

XV’s record-equalling two game winning streak, Anselmians supporters have eschewed the tradiDonal livery of all alpha males (blue club sweater with oversized badge, blue jeans and brown shoes) in favour of wearing Dr. Evil-themed merchandise to celebrate the team’s nosebleed-inducing rise up the league. The club shop has sold out of loose-fiLng sports trousers, shell suit tops and t-shirts bearing the phrase “Oh Dr. Evil.”

Returning to Malone Field from Se6on last Saturday, the Interna'onal Coach of Mystery received a rapturous recep'on from hundreds of embryos, various old men and some Mavericks who had stayed to thank him, and who chanted “Oh Doc- tor – Ev – il”, for minutes as he entered.

The Greatest Coach in the History of the Rugby Union, modest as ever, acknowledged their cheers and made a brief speech. He admi9ed that, while he spent years at Wirral RUFC being cool and edgy, by coming to Anselmians meant he now reached a mass audience.

He con'nued: “I do Glastonbury, I do stadium gigs. I’m on Radio 1 for the young people. I’m on Radio 2 for the old people. Even Steve Hearn likes me.”

Such fervour has led to a mass recruitment drive called involving robbers hats and “Momentum” badges.

At Paton Field, members have told squabbling coaches to focus on important issues like recruitment. The Recruitment Secretary, (“Unsackable” to his chums) has used the pages of the programme to challenge the coaches’ authority by se<ng

out his vision for Na'onal 1, giving a half-hour speech in which he a9acked “pessimists” and called on the club to “let that lion roar”.

The Wirral Globe, inevitably, has championed him and compared him to Winston Churchill, dubbing him “The Roaring Lion” on the front page of last Wednesday’s edi'on.

At the Upper Park, one anonymous player said, “I don’t understand all this fre<ng about MEXIT. Either, Back him or Sack him. Simples.”

Meanwhile, Park President, Mark McNally, lost his voice and was handed a P45 by a suspected Anselmian mole as he struggled to deliver his mo'va'onal talk before Park’s defeat at home to Harrogate. Ex-Anselmian McNally coughed and splu9ered his way through his address to members, who repeatedly gave him long outbreaks of applause so he could get his voice back.

However, McNally, who has confirmed plans to lure young players with free spinning tops, yo-yos and alleged “grammar school educa'on” (sic), abruptly ended his perora'on by saying, “Talk to the frickin’ hand, 'cause the frickin’ face don't wanna hear it anymore,” perhaps in a subconscious homage to the Sage of Eastham.

In another development, Taff “Geraint” Jones, eco-warrior and scourge of referees throughout the known world, was seen to stagger a6er a full lunch at the LSH game

Friends, fearing that he had shipped too much pre-match red wine, rushed to aid the prone Celt, but were quickly reassured that he had not, in fact, fallen. As he rose, albeit unsteadily, he reassured them with an impish grin, “I’m okay. I'm just taking a knee for Anselmians.”

We won the toss. The match started off but

with a few minor mistakes we were down two

tries.

A6er that we realised that we'd have to try

hard to win this. Soon we were playing well

and a6er a few phases we managed to get a

try and a6er that we had scored another and

we were up by 6 tries. Ruck a6er ruck we were

scoring while running at them hard with pres-

sure they couldn't deal with. Soon they scored

but we were in such high spirits we managed

65-22

to score almost instantly. A6er this lots of

mauls and and phases we managed to score

a few more, it was now 65-22.

The final whistle went and we'd won.

Overall we played well and communica'on

was amazing. An incredible victory for our

second match of the season against a team

we struggled against last season, and a su-

perb debut for Lucas Jackson scoring a few

tries.

The last 'me we played Liverpool St Helens was

a few years ago, playing tag Rugby, so neither

side knew what to expect. We went into the

game confidently due to our victory over

Hoylake the week before but with a great

respect for our opposi'on. From kick-off there

was confident play from either side but it

quickly became clear that LSH were skilful,

disciplined and fast. Although we launched a

couple of a9acks and defended passionately,

they were too strong for us and scored a couple

of good tries mainly on the break with some

great handling and fast ball.

However, our defence, scrums and break-down

play were a match for our opponents when we

closed-down their runners. We launched a

spirited a9ack and drove over for Cameron to

score our first try. I would say unfortunately

some handling errors and missed tackles let

LSH in for a couple more tries before half

'me.

Second half, despite our best efforts saw

LSH again running in some tries. We kept

our heads however and con'nued to press

them ge<ng a penalty on the twenty-two

on which Ben ran in a great solo try from a

set piece. Our pressure paid off, this led to a

few turn-overs to put us on the front foot

and in the dying minutes we drove against a

strong LSH defence with Anthony going low

under the pack, ripping the ball and

grounding it for our third try of the day.

A posi've that we should take from this

game is despite a stronger opposi'on and

some frustra'ons we never gave up and

played fiercely un'l the very end. Final

score LSH 50-15 Saints.

“A Fierce Performance against a Strong Team”

A wonderful way to kick off our new season with a run out at Hoylake RFC. Some great rugby was played on a beauDful morning and both sides clearly gave it their all. Through some superb team individual performances, we managed to secure our first win of the season – played 1; won 1!

Captain Josh Roe lead from the front with some fine work both in a9ack and defence, and the team backed him up impressively. In fact, it was “up front” that we managed to exert our influence on a big set of players from Hoylake. Luke Murphy, Jasper Richards and William Gavin-Cooper all helping to secure the ball at the breakdown. The instruc'on was to be very physical in that area and they certainly were that!

Debutant Joe Hughes was able to run in 4 tries –

which I’m sure will be the first of many. This also meant that our first Man of the Match went to Joe who was excellent in both a9ack and defence,.

Other notable performances came from Finnan Ashton whose cricke'ng skills came to the fore when catching the restarts and Oliver Arnold whose defence and tac'cal kicking were excellent. Another men'on here for Luke Murphy whose aggressive running meant some excellent gain lines wins! In fact, if it wasn’t for Joe’s performance Luke would certainly have been named Man of the Match.

Next up we welcome Oswestry RFC to Malone Fields for another very physical encounter, if we con'nue to play like this then we shouldn’t have any problems!

Another lovely morning at Malone Fields where we welcomed our friends from Oswestry RFC. A fiercely compe''ve match ensued and despite some early pressure from a large ou`it The Saints quickly went into the lead. Through some lovely passing movements we extended this lead and Oswestry never really looked like overturning it. There were big performances all-round both in defence and a9ack, some excellent a9acking movement as well as some great defence. Although at 'mes this did get a li9le “high” from both sides, which was, even if I say so myself, excellently refereed!! (You had to be there!)

Philip Bradwell was our Captain today and lead from the front making some really powerful surges through the middle, but along with two others were “re'red hurt” through slight knocks to the head – must get those tackles lower boys! We managed to win all of our ball at the breakdown and even a couple of steals too, so a great performance in this area too.

Unfortunately, as the game wore on and we became more 'red and one-dimensional, Oswestry came back into the game, they also scored an exquisite try from a cross-field kick! However, through some excellent play we managed to hold out for the win – played 2: won 2!

Some excellent performances from everyone today, Ben Griffiths & Koby AbboN all looked threatening

today, with the ball in hand. With Joe Hughes, Oscar Edmunds, Conor Grealis and Max Frodsham pu<ng in excellent all-round performances. However, our stand out Man of the Match was Luke Murphy, who was easily the best player on the pitch! A9ack, defence and all-round understanding of his place on the pitch was superb, building on his performance from last week – well played Luke!

Unfortunately, an incident took place where a Saints player was deliberately struck, and I had to send a player from the field. A6er which his parent was also removed from the Club, for abusive language and threatening behaviour (I was so scared). There is no place on our pitches for this sort of behaviour and I was so pleased with all the boys’ reac'ons when they came together with the rest of the Oswestry team – shoulder to shoulder – and agreed to play on in the proper fashion! The spirit, ethos and power of Rugby Union was so apparent the boys, coaches and other supporters showed why it is the greatest game on the planet!

Well played to all of the boys keep it up!

Next up a training session where we will be working hard on all aspects of the new rules, if we keep up this hard work then we can look forward to a very impressive season!

Following a promising end to their u7s life, the u8s

appear to have started the season where they le6 off

with plenty of encouraging play and great

determina'on shown on the pitch. The match against

Oswestry, who arrived in numbers, was played in great

spirit with end to end ac'on with plenty of try's from

both sides. Whilst the boys get used to a much bigger

pitch and some new rules, the Saints showed signs of

star'ng to pass to a teammate in space and spread the

play.... albeit plenty to work on this was very

encouraging indeed! Well done to all the boys and

many thanks to Oswestry for making the journey.

Suppor.ng Anselmians Rugby

“Anselmians Ladies Have Landed”

“We adverDsed for three weeks on Facebook and locally for players and we gained 19 ladies - 10 of whom have never played rugby before, and are from the local area, highlighDng a market for this team and showing that ladies will come along even if they have never picked up a ball before.“

Marke'ng will con'nue and I hope to get more in for next week.

We began the training session by warming up and that evolved into a game of touch rugby, alongside lots of laughter and giggles we organised a good defensive line and started communica'ng on the pitch to each other. Those who had played before were pivotal in suppor'ng those who hadn't but the standard of the newcomers was unbelievable.

Lots of power, speed and compe''ve edge was displayed through all of the ladies and I can already envisage us being a highly compe''ve side. With several ladies asking when we were ge<ng the pads out for some contact work!!

We were lucky enough to be supported by some of the Men’s 1st team who commented on the high standard of the play and the numbers we had for a first session and it was really great to have them along. We look forward to suppor'ng their games in the future.

We also had members of the third team come

along to support our launch and we hope to work with them to develop our skills in the near future.

A6er training we decamped to the clubhouse for lashings of cake and Prosecco where we discussed the evening’s training and assessed the success of the event. With comments such as "I loved it", "I had a brilliant night", "I cant wait for next week" and "this is exactly what I have been missing in my life", I am certain that the team has a long future ahead of it.

The evening closed a6er we were full of cake and although we le6 the club, the Facebook banter con'nued well into the evening (safe to say they're a cracking bunch of women!).

Chris did us proud for our first session and all credit to him for the enjoyment of the night, the ladies really loved his coaching style and manner.

The clubhouse bar was open to massive thanks to JT, Callum and Lucy for their help on the night. All of the ladies have commented about how welcome they feel and this is really all credit to the club and its members. We have a bright future ahead of us!

If anyone can help us out with sponsorship then please let me know, I'm trying but no takers just yet (I have a9ached my sponsor poster in case anyone fancies sending it on for me!). Also, if anyone wants to be on our team commi9ee or help us out with training sessions and lend us their exper'se then we'd genuinely be delighted.

Ground Force By Farmer Jones

Each week, a massive amount

of work, by a small band of

committed volunteers, goes

into maintaining our grounds.

This week, Farmer Jones reports in

from Italy where is taking a well-

earned rest, leaving the rest of the

tractor boys to do ALL the work of

preparing the pitches for this

weekend’s games. Worse, someone

else will have to prepare our own

breakfast!

“There’s not much to report in this edi.on

– grass cukng is slowly coming to an end

and our work on Thursdays is focused

mainly on keeping the pitches and

surrounding areas .dy.

This does lead me ask all involved to please

not leave li9er on the grounds. We spend

at least an hour each week picking up

debris le6 by members and visitors from

matches and training sessions!

This is addi'onal to the li9er and worse le6

by members of the public.

So , if you are a player please don’t drop

bo9les and tape on the ground ; if you’re a

spectator, take your cartons and glasses to

the bins or back to the bar. Please help us to

present the club as we would all wish it to be

– clean , 'dy and cared for.

We have started to cut back overhanging

branches around the area and in the next few

weeks we should have some logs available.
