Welcome to the 13th Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival!

Sat 20 May – Sun 4 June 2017We are delighted that once again the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival will be delivering 16 days of great walking across the East Midlands’ only Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With walks ranging from 1 to 76 miles, taking place in the mornings, afternoons, evenings and even at night, we know that there will be something perfect for you. Whether you like to challenge yourself to walk at a hearty pace across hilltops or would prefer a gentle amble around a market town, we have something for everyone. We are really keen to inspire young people to take part and this year we have lots of fun events and activities designed for toddlers right through to teenagers. Of course, not everyone finds it easy to get out into the fresh air and so we are continuing to offer walks for people with disabilities.

Stop PressIn company with the South Lincolnshire Walking Festival, we are pleased to announce that we will be expanding our activities to get more people walking, as part of Lincolnshire County Council’s three-year Access Lincoln project, supported by the Department of Transport. We will be developing this programme over the coming months, check out www.woldswalkingfestival.co.uk and the Council’s website www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/accesslincoln plus our social media for updates.

Our brochure and websiteDedicated festival-goers will have noticed that the brochure has gone slim-line. All the key facts about each walk are still included but walk descriptions will now be on the website. In addition to an interactive map, you can also print walks listings, as well as seeing full detail for each walk by using the Walk Finder. Do check our website for updates about walks and other activities during the festival.

The LaunchSaturday 20 May 10am – 4pm The Viking Centre, Pelham Road, Claxby LN8 3YRSituated between Caistor and Market Rasen, Claxby is a pretty village in a rugged Wolds landscape. The Viking Centre accommodation hostel will provide a great base for a day of good walking, with a barbeque (bacon butties and Lincoln Red burgers) provided by The Rotary Club of Market Rasen, in addition to hot and cold drinks, cakes and savouries offered by Viking Centre volunteers.

We are honoured that the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Toby Dennis, will be with us to launch the festival, a wonderful stamp of approval on what is by now a valued institution. Rain or shine, you are invited to join us on short and long walks around the area. History buffs will enjoy our “talking walks” to discover more about Claxby’s geology and mining history, or why not follow our self-led history walk around the village? Courtesy of local landowners we will also take you further afield to explore some hidden landscapes that are very much “off the beaten track.”

The Finale Sunday 4 June 10am – 4pmHamilton Hall, East Road, Tetford nr Horncastle LN9 6QQWe hope you can join us for our festival finale in the village of Tetford. Always a great day out, this year’s event will offer a selection of walks that explore the landscape and villages in this scenic part of the Lincolnshire Wolds. A Roman road traverses the village, which is rich in all kinds of history. Learn about a Victorian neighbour Alfred Lord Tennyson, or bring your family to discover the natural history of Lincolnshire’s chalk streams.

For those who just want to stride out into the hills, we offer plenty of choice and lots of routes into the hidden valleys and tiny settlements that encircle Tetford. The Hamilton Hall committee are providing refreshments all day, with car parking by courtesy of Robert Bell, so why not celebrate the end of a great 16 days with us? We look forward to seeing you there!

All launch and finale walks will be donations only.

Charging for walksYou will notice that some of our walks now have a ticket price and that many others invite voluntary donations for the walking festival, as well as for local good causes. This will help us cover our core costs and ensure that we can keep it going for the future. Thank you to everyone who responded so positively to our proposals, we have kept the prices low (£2 upwards) to ensure everyone is able to continue to take part. Everyone aged under 18 goes free. For ticketed walks you can pay online or cash on the day. Online purchases can be made by clicking the hyperlink for each walk on the ‘Walks’ page on the website. You can also buy a ‘ticket card’ in advance, either online or by sending us a cheque and we’ll post it out to you. Ticket cards cost £10 for 5 walks, £20 for 12 walks and £30 for unlimited walks. Earlybird ticket card purchases between 1 March – 15 April benefit from even cheaper prices. If you are paying by cash, please help our walk leaders by bringing the correct change on the day!For further information go to www.woldswalkingfestival.co.uk, email [email protected] or phone 01529 461499.

How was it for you?Walkers’ feedback is vital in letting us (and our funders) know more about who takes part in the festival and what you think about it. Please do complete our questionnaire, which you can complete online or use the paper copy which your walk leader supplies at the end of the walk.
