Going: Good to Soft (Good in places)

The Grand National course is triangular with its apex (at the Canal Turn) the furthest point from the stands. Inside is the Mildmay course which has birch fences. A major feature of the Mildmay course is its sharpness, though the fences are stiff and it’s a tough jumping test. The Grand National is run over two complete circuits taking in sixteen spruce fences first time around and fourteen the second. Alterations to the fences in recent times have had the effect of making it a less severe test of jumping than used to be case. Since 2013, the run to the first fence in the Grand National was reduced in a bid to also improve safety, resulting in the overall race distance shortening from the usual 4½m, though the run-in is still 494 yards long and includes an elbow.

Pace Information: Weak

1 CIGARETTESNALCOHOL (IRE) (10) 7569-5 5 10-12 | 68.9kg Richard Spencer James Best Related to a bumper winner but didn’t show much both starts in that sphere at he beginning of 2021 and similarly well held on return/hurdles bow at Fakenham in October.

2 HILLCREST (IRE) (228) 10021- 6 10-12 | 68.9kg Henry Daly Richard Patrick Cost €190,000 as a 3-y-o and confirmed bumper debut promise when landing 9-runner Wetherby contest in March, finding plenty despite still looking raw. Very interesting hurdles prospect.

3 LIMETREE BOY (IRE) 89 5 10-12 | 68.9kg Jonjo O’Neill Tom Scudamore Shirocco brother to fairly useful hurdler Joseph Conrad (2m winner), and half-brother to bumper winner Derrygereen Girl. Makes appeal on paper for in-form yard, so worth a check in betting for clues.

4 MUCHO MAS (IRE) (237) 921P- 5 10-12 | 68.9kg Ben Pauling Kielan Woods Overcame inexperience to make winning bumper debut at WIncanton (15.3f) last December. Pulled up sharply at Warwick in March but he remains an interesting prospect now hurdling on return.

5 NO WORD OF A LIE (17) 94422-2 5 10-12 | 68.9kg Oliver Signy Gavin Sheehan Fairly useful in bumpers and definite promise (shaped like a stayer) when runner-up in a Fontwell maiden hurdle (19.2f) on return last month. Likely improver for all further may suit in due course.

6 OUR JET (IRE) 92 5 10-12 | 68.9kg Dan Skelton Harry Skelton Jet Away gelding out of a dam who was placed in points. Third sole outing in Irish points (Oct 2020) and he’s worthy of close market scruitny on Rules/hurdles bow (stable won this 12 months ago).

7 SAN GIOVANNI (IRE) (344) 9050- 5 10-12 | 68.9kg

Harry Fry Nick Scholfield Some promise on first of 2 starts in bumpers for Emma Lavelle last winter. Has since switched yards but others appeal more now hurdling on balance.

8 TIGERBYTHETAIL (IRE) (216) (BF) 962- 5 10-12 | 68.9kg

Olly Murphy Aidan Coleman £105,000 Yeats gelding. Half-brother to smart hurdler Roksana and useful hurdler Robin Roe. Only greenness prevented him from making a winning start in a Market Rasen bumper in April. Nice prospect.

BETTING FORECAST:5-2 Hillcrest, 4-1 Tigerbythetail, 5-1 No Word of A Lie, 13-2 Mucho Mas, 7-1 Our Jet, 11-1 San Giovanni, 16-1 Limetree Boy, 100-1 bar

TIMEFORM VIEW:HILLCREST confirmed the promise of his bumper debut effort when scoring at Warwck in the spring, finding plenty to lead near the finish despite still looking very raw. A most exciting prospect now his attentions are switched to timber, he gets the nod to come out on top. Tigerbythetail, who shaped promisingly in a Market Rasen bumper in the spring, and No Word Of A Lie are others to consider.

Pace Information: Weak

1 KOSHARI (FR) (25) s 89160-16503 9 11-12 | 75.3kg David Christie, Ireland Jonathan Moore Smart on his day, as he demonstrated when landing a big pot for Willie Mullins at Leopardstown in May. However, makes debut for new yard on the back of a string of low-key efforts. Cheekpieces added.

2 THE WORLDS END (IRE) (259) (CD) 94131P/P633- 10 11-7 | 73.0kg

Olly Murphy A. P. Heskin Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle winner in December 2019, but clearly not the force of old having failed to fire both starts over hurdles last term prior to coming up short in a couple of hunter chases.

3 ACT OF GOD (42) 975/1-445615 6 11-1 | 70.3kg E. J. O’Grady, Ireland Phillip Enright Posted a career-best when winning 15-runner handicap hurdle at Bellewstown (20.3f) in August. Successful on the Flat last month, too, and this Irish raider is worthy of consideration.

4 DEISE ABA (IRE) (233) s 934115/PP1P- 8 10-12 | 68.9kg Philip Hobbs James Best Clear-cut winner of 3m Sandown handicap chase in February, but was pulled up on his other 3 starts last term and it’s hard to know what to expect of him back in this sphere. Yard also saddles Pileon.

5 SUPREMELY LUCKY (IRE) (22) s 87431232-47 9 10-12 | 68.9kg

Charlie Longsdon Dylan Kitts (10lb/5kg) Useful winning hurdler/maiden chaser for Dan Skelton, but hasn’t fired in 2 starts over fences for new yard this season and resumes in this sphere on a tough-looking mark.

6 RAPPER (377) 997127/4- 7 10-12 | 68.9kg Henry Daly Richard Patrick Improved during 2019/20 campaign and shaped well when fourth of 11 here on chase debut/sole start last season. Trip/ground no problem and should have a part to play back hurdling if fully tuned-up.

7 REMASTERED (235) (D) t 1002P33/1115- 8 10-10 | 68.0kg David Pipe Tom Scudamore Quickly made up into a smart novice chaser last term and by no means disgraced when fifth in a Grade 2 at the Cheltenham Festival when last seen in March. Resumes in this sphere on an attractive mark.

8 PILEON (IRE) (176) 97112/4PP8-0 7 10-9 | 67.6kg Philip Hobbs Ben Jones Failed to shine (initially over fences) last term, but it’s worth remembering that he was just touched off in the Martin Pipe off a 6 lb higher mark at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival. One to consider.

9 SOUTH TERRACE (IRE) (132) 9864132-221 6 10-4 | 65.3kg Dr Richard Newland Sam Twiston-Davies Largely progressive 6-y-o who opened his account at fifth attempt for this yard when bagging a Uttoxeter handicap (23.3f) in June. More needed up 6 lb, but he’s an intriguing candidate all the same.

10 AQUILA SKY (IRE) (22) (D) t 997337411-6 6 10-4 | 65.3kg

Sam Allwood Harry Skelton Ended last season on a high, landing back-to-back handicap hurdles upped to this trip at Doncaster and Ayr. Little impact on return/chase debut at Uttoxeter, but possibilities back in this sphere.

11 SUPREME ESCAPE (IRE) (196) (D) 941P/71P51P- 7 10-0(9-7) | 63.5kg (60.3kg) Evan Williams Adam Wedge Low-mileage 7-y-o who scored twice over fences at Chepstow last term. However, his profile is starting to look rather patchy and he faces an uphill task back hurdling from 7 lb out of the weights.

11 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:5-1 South Terrace, 11-2 Pileon, 7-1 Act of God, 17-2 Rapper, 9-1 Remastered, 12-1 Deise Aba, 14-1 Aquila Sky, 14-1 The Worlds End, 16-1 Koshari, 18-1 Supreme Escape, 20-1 Supremely Lucky

TIMEFORM VIEW:The pick of several appealing candidates in this competitive contest is REMASTERED, who returns to hurdles on a potentially handy mark judged on his exploits over fences last season and his record when fresh also augurs well. Act of God is well worth another try over this sort of trip and, fresh from a recent victory on the level, he is next on the list ahead of Rapper and Pileon.

Pace Information: Weak

1 KATESON (211) (C, D) s+t 94542/81305- 8 11-8 | 73.5kg Alastair Ralph Tom Scudamore Galvanised by application of cheekpieces last term, landing 2½m handicap hurdle here in December prior to good fifth in Gr. 3 handicap final start. Not ruled out returned to chasing for new stable now

2 KILTEALY BRIGGS (IRE) (22) (D) t 9531P/2349-4 7 11-8 | 73.5kg Jamie Snowden A. P. Heskin :Useful winning hurdler who ran up to best when 3.5 lengths fourth of 7 in a novices’ handicap chase at Uttoxeter (22.5f) on return in October. Should go well again.

3 HOOLIGAN (IRE) (219) 9451/1312- 6 11-8 | 73.5kg Tom George Jonathan Burke 6-y-o who gained what looked a most unlikely third success over hurdles at Newcastle (16.2f) in February. Runner-up over 18.9f in France thereafter and step up to 2½m looks a plus now chasing.

4 BEAKSTOWN (IRE) (606) (D) t 972435/ 8 11-6 | 72.6kg Dan Skelton Harry Skelton Grade 2 novice hurdle winner who matched previous best over fences when fifth in competitive 2½m Cheltenham Festival handicap in March 2020. Absent since but 6 lb lower for return and one to note.

5 RUTHLESS ARTICLE (IRE) (21) (CD) t 94244-1F23P 8 11-4 | 71.7kg Rebecca Curtis Sean Bowen Three-time hurdles winner who opened account in this sphere over C&D in June. Placed on 2 of last 3 starts and seemingly not 100% at Ffos Las on latest outing. Still, this looks deeper.

6 YOUR DARLING (IRE) (25) (D) 1001P/34-11 6 11-0 | 69.9kg Ben Pauling Kielan Woods Bumper winner who tasted success over hurdles in May and surpassed that form with an impressive chase debut win at Huntingdon (19.8f) in October. Up in class but highly likely there is more to come.

7 EDEN FLIGHT (FR) (217) 9202/F757- 7 10-12 | 68.9kg Venetia Williams Charlie Deutsch French bumper winner who showed fairly useful form (at his best) without getting his head in front over hurdles for Willie Mullins. Market may guide now chasing for new yard on back of a wind op.

8 LINELEE KING (FR) (201) (BF) 9310/124825- 6 10-11 | 68.5kg

Olly Murphy Aidan Coleman Bumper winner who reached a fairly useful level over hurdles, good second on handicap bow at Southwell (3m) in February. Below best final start but boasts a pointing background and yard in good order.

9 ONCHAN (IRE) (255) (BF) 9366/3P23- 6 10-7 | 66.7kg Nigel Twiston-Davies Sam Twiston-Davies Plenty to like on paper and showed plenty of ability over hurdles, placed on 3 of 4 starts at up to 25.5f last term. Good type physically and he should make his mark over fences. Interesting.

9 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:7-2 Your Darling, 11-2 Beakstown, 7-1 Kiltealy Briggs, 8-1 Ruthless Article, 8-1 Hooligan, 9-1 Kateson, 10-1 Linelee King, 11-1 Onchan, 14-1 Eden Flight

TIMEFORM VIEW:A really interesting novices’ handicap chase with the vote in favour of YOUR DARLING. A progressive hurdler, he surpassed his form in that sphere when scoring impressively on chase debut at Huntingdon in October and he looks up to handling his subsequent rise in the weights. Beakstown has a lengthy absence to overcome but is also high on the shortlist, along with Kiltealy Briggs and Linelee King.

Pace Information: Strong

1 SPYGLASS HILL (IRE) (27) 97P26323-85 8 11-12 | 75.3kg Henry de Bromhead, Ireland H. Morgan (3lb/1kg) Prominent racer prone to mistakes but he’s classy. Faded after late errors in the Munster National (3m) at Limerick last month and drop in trip will help. Could well take to these fences. Interesting.

2 FRANCKY DU BERLAIS (FR) (21) (D) t 96214-11316 8 11-11 | 74.8kg Peter Bowen Sean Bowen Thriving in spring/summer, landing a big pot in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen. Better for return there behind Senior Citizen 3 weeks ago and yard have tasted plenty of success over these fences.

3 THE WEST’S AWAKE (IRE) (20) b+t 967-9317023 10 11-11 | 74.8kg E. J. O’Grady, Ireland Phillip Enright Won at Kilbeggan in June and placed in useful handicap chases the last twice. Having a belated first go over these fences but he’s got a good completion rate in recent times and could go well.

4 TIME TO GET UP (IRE) (231) t 9942/3411- 8 11-10 | 74.4kg Jonjo O’Neill Tom Scudamore Much improved for switch to chasing for new yard last season, conceding first run but still winning well in Midlands National when last seen. More to come and he’s all over a Grand National contender.

5 AL ROC (FR) (37) 8902/86125-8 10 11-8 | 73.5kg Dr Richard Newland Sam Twiston-Davies Smart chaser in France but has made an underwhelming start for this yard in 2 runs 8 months apart (wind op in between, ran over hurdles on return). Needs a big revival tried over these fences.

6 SENIOR CITIZEN (21) (D) 994/12743-41 8 11-5 | 72.1kg Alan King A. P. Heskin Ran well both tries over these fences last season (test too much in the mud in this, then placed in messy Topham) and back to winning ways at Market Rasen 3 weeks ago. Big shout despite 5 lb rise.

7 HOGAN’S HEIGHT (IRE) (16) (CD) t 100715/P60-4 10 11-4 | 71.7kg Jamie Snowden Page Fuller Stormed to victory in this in 2019 (off just 4 lb lower) and while it’s been slim pickings since (left way behind in the National), he didn’t look a lost cause back over hurdles on recent return.

8 MAC TOTTIE (36) (D) t 968P12P12-4 8 11-1 | 70.3kg Peter Bowen James Bowen Ended 2020/21 on a high (2 victories in novice handicap chases last term) but returned with a poor effort at Fontwell. May revive over these fences given the yard, who also run Francky du Berlais.

9 CAT TIGER (FR) (165) (BF) t 981211P/13-2 7 11-0 | 69.9kg Paul Nicholls Mr David Maxwell (3lb/1kg) Classy chaser who won Leicester hunter in March and ran well over these fences in the Foxhunters’. Not so good at Southwell when last seen but these sort of races will rightly remain on his radar.

10 VIA DOLOROSA (FR) (42) (D) b+t 985B2627-31 9 10-12 | 68.9kg David Pipe David Noonan Useful jumper at up to 23f in France, though his claiming hurdle win 42 days ago was his first since December 2017. Not obviously well treated starting out for new yard.

11 THOMAS MACDONAGH (227) t 98150/431P2- 8 10-10 | 68.0kg Jamie Snowden Gavin Sheehan Improved form over fences last term, the only finisher at Catterick (25f, heavy) and signing off with a good run at Haydock. All stamina and expect to see him prominent under in-form rider. Respected.

12 FIVE STAR GETAWAY (IRE) (28) 9906/51117-7 7 10-10 | 68.0kg Christian Williams Nick Scholfield Ex-pointer who progressed rapidly upon going chasing last term, easily winning 3 handicaps. Should have come on for Chepstow return and not dismissed on first go over these fences.

13 SIR JACK YEATS (IRE) (211) b 982/4123875- 10 10-6 | 66.2kg Richard Spencer James Best Fairly useful chaser, very reliable over these fences and ran well for a long way once more in the Topham when last seen. One for each-way players at a big price again.

14 MANWELL (IRE) (20) (D) t 974345/1R2-4 11 10-0 | 63.5kg Sam England Jonathan England Won on return at Sedgefield (21f, heavy) last term and not seen to best effect after 6 months off on comeback there (29.2f) 20 days ago. Doesn’t appeal as a likely winner on first go on this course.

14 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:9-2 Time To Get Up, 6-1 Senior Citizen, 7-1 Hogan’s Height, 8-1 Cat Tiger, 10-1 Thomas Macdonagh, 12-1 Spyglass Hill, 14-1 The West’s Awake, 16-1 Francky Du Berlais, 18-1 Sir Jack Yeats, 22-1 Five Star Getaway, 22-1 Mac Tottie, 50-1 bar

TIMEFORM VIEW:SENIOR CITIZEN has a big prize in him over these fences judged on the way he took to them twice last season. A return to winning ways in a useful contest at Market Rasen 3 weeks ago proved his well-being and he can come out on top again. All roads point to the National for Time To Get Up but he can still make a mockery of his revised mark on his return. 2019-winner Hogan’s Height may revive.

1 ANTUNES (239) (D) 99P7/215F13- 7 11-12 | 75.3kg Dan Skelton Harry Skelton Quickly made up into a useful chaser last term, winning twice from the front over 2m. Held in stronger handicap final start though, and he’ll need more to take this on return.

2 KNIGHT IN DUBAI (IRE) (606) t 95112U/ 8 11-10 | 74.4kg Dan Skelton David England Useful hurdler who scored twice as a novice in this sphere over further during 2019/20 campaign. Missed the whole of last season, though, and might need this.

3 ARVICO BLEU (IRE) (23) (D) t 1004400-2171 9 11-10 | 74.4kg Ewan Whillans Callum Bewley Bounced back to form for new connections (bought from Henry de Bromhead for just £9,000) when winning 2m novice handicap chase at Carlisle 3 weeks ago, easily. Good shout again up 6 lb.

TIMEFORM VIEW:ARVICO BLEU won in good style at Carlisle starting out for Ewan Whillans and could follow up after a 6 lb rise. Gunsight Ridge is interesting on his chase debut/return having progressed over hurdles last season. Golden Whisky was another in fine form when last seen and can go well if ready to roll.

Pace Information: Very Weak

1 BREWIN’UPASTORM (IRE) (212) t 9511U/65115- 8 11-6 | 72.6kg

Olly Murphy Aidan Coleman Very smart hurdler who scored twice last term and signed off with creditable fifth in Aintree Hurdle over C&D. Yard among the winners and had wind op, so respected despite conceding weight all round.

2 WILDE ABOUT OSCAR (IRE) (211) (CD) 9314/11P110- 6 11-2 | 70.8kg Dan Skelton Harry Skelton Useful hurdler who looked firmly on the up until turning in a poor effort in C&D handicap in April. This is tougher, but he’s still low mileage and C&D winner is sort to bounce back.

3 IF THE CAP FITS (IRE) (210) (C) 9315/123290- 9 11-0 | 69.9kg

Harry Fry Sean Bowen Smart hurdler/chaser who ended last term out of sorts, only eleventh in Stayers Hurdle here in the spring. Yard are going well though so this course winner can’t be totally discounted.

4 LISNAGAR OSCAR (IRE) (210) 98F31/472F8- 8 11-0 | 69.9kg Rebecca Curtis Adam Wedge 2020 Stayers’ winner at Cheltenham but he went winless last term and signed off with modest eighth in Stayers Hurdle here in the April. Returns with a bit to prove now.

5 SUMMERVILLE BOY (IRE) (301) (CD) 100F125/1455- 9 11-0 | 69.9kg Tom George Tom Scudamore 2018 Supreme Hurdle hero who also landed this contest a year ago. Ended last season below par, but he goes very well fresh and rates a big player at these weights.

6 MARTELLO SKY (21) (D) 932/151181-1 5 10-9 | 67.6kg Lucy Wadham A. P. Heskin Ended a most productive novice season with Cheltenham listed win and took her form up a notch with ready handicap win at Market Rasen last month. This demands a lot more, but she’s still improving.

6 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:7-2 Summerville Boy, 7-2 Brewin’upastorm, 9-2 Martello Sky, 11-2 Lisnagar Oscar, 11-2 Wilde About Oscar, 10-1 If The Cap Fits

TIMEFORM VIEW:SUMMERVILLE BOY goes very well fresh and is favoured at the weights here too so is taken to repeat his victory in this contest 12 months ago. Brewinupastorm ended last term back on song and hails from a yard among the winners so appeals as the one to chase him home despite having to concede weight all round. If The Cap Fits is another worth considering for an in-form stable.

1 BO KAAP (IRE) 95 3 10-12 | 68.9kg

Harry Fry Sean Bowen Mount Nelson gelding. Closely related to a winner on Flat and half-brother to hurdler Multiviz. Dam maiden on Flat (stayed 7f). Noteworthy newcomer.

2 DESERT STRANGER 79 3 10-12 | 68.9kg R. Mike Smith Callum Bewley £12,500 3-y-o, Helmet gelding. Dam 7f winner. Best opposed unless he attracts good support.

3 IDEM (FR) 89 3 10-12 | 68.9kg

Lucinda Russell Tom Scudamore €26,000 3-y-o, Rail Link gelding. A winner, and half-brother to 3 winners, including useful hurdler Cote d’Azur and fairly useful hurdler/chaser Fortuitous. Will probably lack the pace of some.

4 LEGIONAR (GER) (32) 1003 3 10-12 | 68.9kg

Milton Harris Mitchell Bastyan (3lb/1kg) Related to a number of Flat winners and showed up well when third at Huntingdon a month ago, finishing with running left. Stable is flying and the longer trip will suit. Player.

5 PROFILES MIX (FR) 88 3 10-12 | 68.9kg Micky Hammond Miss Becky Smith (3lb/1kg) Gemix gelding. Half-brother to Belle du Bresil. Dam maiden on Flat. Others make more appeal.

6 SANDRINGHAM (FR) 92 3 10-12 | 68.9kg M. Hofer, Germany Aidan Coleman Dream Ahead gelding. Half-brother to 2 winners, including bumper winner/useful hurdler Surin. Dam lightly raced on Flat.

7 SAVEASEA (IRE) 97 3 10-12 | 68.9kg Dan Skelton Harry Skelton Sea The Moon gelding. Half-brother to useful 1m-2m winner Mandatario. Dam unraced. Makes plenty of appeal for top yard.

8 POETRIA (32) 896 3 10-5 | 65.8kg Mark Walford Sam Twiston-Davies Hint of ability when mid-field at Huntingdon first time out, but unlikely to reverse form with Legionar.

9 SIMPLY RED (21) t 877 3 10-5 | 65.8kg Oliver Greenall Ross Turner (5lb/2kg) Didn’t offer much in a Market Rasen bumper 3 weeks ago, so hard to imagine she’ll feature in this.

9 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:5-2 Legionar, 7-2 Saveasea, 9-2 Bo Kaap, 13-2 Sandringham, 14-1 Poetria, 14-1 Idem, 25-1 Profiles Mix, 40-1 bar

TIMEFORM VIEW:LEGIONAR shaped with plenty of encouragement when third at Huntingdon on debut and should improve for this extra test of stamina. He’s fancied to put his experience to good use against some interesting newcomers, the most notable of which are Saveasea and Bo Kaap.
