Greatness I used to fantasize and daydream about the things I like to do in life. Each time, my fantasies depict me as being the greatest at what I am doing. Playing golf, I daydream about making extraordinary shots to win the coveted Green Jacket. In solving puzzles, nobody

can do it faster than me. On the Chessboard, I am invincible. Even in priesthood, I daydreamed on being the greatest preacher, the one that somehow can always show the right amount of empathy in helping people through a crisis, saying the right words that help someone turn the corner in their faith, and have people lining up in front of my door just for a moment of my sagely advice. Those were great fantasies for me to have, and I am sure that I am not the only one has fantasies of being great in the eyes of others.

But then I came crashing down to the reality of things, realizing that there will always be someone else that is better than me in the things I like to do, and not only am I not great at any of these things, some of them I am downright inept. The fantasy of being great and the best is just that—a fantasy. And it causes one to evaluate one’s role in life.

Today we celebrate the birth of Saint John the Baptist, someone the Church regards as a great saint in our tradition. Saint Paul recounts John’s greatness in our second reading from the Acts of the Apostles, telling us how John proclaimed a baptism of repentance. But even as great as John was, there was someone greater him that he admits that he is unworthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet. Many of us strive to be the greatest, but here we are reminded of thing that made John the Baptist great was the fact that he pointed to someone greater.

It is not by random chance that the Church celebrates the birth of John on this day. We are just past the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere with regards to sunlight. It is symbolic that one of the brightest lights pointing to Christ would be born one of the brightest days of the year. In contrast, Jesus was born after the winter solstice, when days were at their darkest. John declared that “He must increase while I must decrease.” As John light decreases after being born on this day, Christ’s light increases after his birth.

The meaning of John’s birth is significant because of the meaning of the birth of Christ. John’s greatness is dependent of Christ’s greatness. It seems to me that it was not a concern of John to fantasize and wonder how great he was. As long as he was pointing to Christ, Christ would make him great.

It is a good thing that we push ourselves to be the best that we can be. That is being a good steward of God’s grace to us. Yes, while it may be true that in anything we say and do there is someone out there that can say and do it better, that is okay. As long as we are following the example of John the Baptist, pointing to Christ, we are destined for greatness.

The way we point to Christ is by living lives of integrity. The way we point to Christ is by treating others with dignity and charity. The way we point to Christ is by being true to our faith, celebrating the sacraments on

Everyday Stewardship

What power lies in a name? Have you ever met a "David," "Holly," or "Jack" and said, "They don't look like a David, Holly, or Jack"? Sometimes our name actually adds something to our person. Peculiar people sometimes have peculiar names. Some people of tremendous strength have names that we deem strong as well. Sometimes we give nicknames to people because of some attributes they exhibit.

In the Bible, names mean a lot. Saul changes his name to Paul when he converts. Adam means "man," as in the first man. Eve means "to live" or "to breathe." Elizabeth took great care to name her son John as God commanded, even if other family members did not understand why such a unique name not found in their lineage. It was a unique name for a child who had a unique future of preparing the way for the Messiah.

We have our baptismal names, our surnames, our Confirmation names, and our maiden names. But all disciples of Jesus also bear the same name: Christian. People may wonder what does a David, Holly, or Jack really look like, but they should never wonder what a Christian looks like. Unfortunately, too often those who bear this name don't resemble the characteristics embodied in the name. Simply, a Christian looks like Christ. A Christian acts like Christ. A Christian truly is Christ to a world that seeks to uncover the true meaning of his name. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

(continued from page 2) a regular basis, and defending Christian values. The way we point to Christ is by showing that we get our strength and joy from being a follower of Jesus Christ.

While we may fantasize on how we can be great in the eyes of others, we can be confident that no matter whether we are inept or competent or even great at the things we do, Christ is the one who ultimately makes us great. He makes us great with his love and mercy and forgiveness. He makes us great with the gift of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. He makes great as we come together as the Body of Christ to share the Eucharist. Let our celebration today be a reminder of, with the mercy of God, how great we will be.—TB

Fr. James Peterson, from our Archdiocesan mission parish in Venezuela, will present our annual mission appeal the weekend of July 7-8. The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis has had a unique relationship with the Diocese of Ciudad Guayana since 1970 sending our archdiocesan priests to serve parishes there. Today, two priests serve the parish of Jesucristo Resucitado in San Felix. This diocese suffers from 70% unemployment and a lack of healthcare and basic nutrition. Fr. Peterson will speak about the needs of the poor and needy within the 11 barrios of the parish. He will be seeking our financial support for this mission of evangelization, lifting human dignity and giving opportunities for growth.

Ladies, join WINE: Women In the New Evangelization as we welcome LeAnn Theiman, a woman who went from

“Cupcake Buyer to Communism Fighter” in the blink of an eye.

For every soul who has ever been asked by God to change their plans, LeAnn Thieman can relate: “You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped; you were too strong for me, and you triumphed” (Jeremiah 20:7). She simply wanted to buy a dozen cupcakes but found herself saving hundreds of babies in the Vietnam Orphan Airlift as Saigon fell to communism. No stranger to war zones, LeAnn has practical tools and hope-filled stories to refresh every worker growing weary in the Lord’s Vineyard. Settle in for some hearty Chicken Soup for the Catholic Soul as LeAnn encourages ordinary people to embrace the grace of God and accomplish extraordinary things. We will also be entertained by the extremely gifted Marie Miller. So, join us on Tuesday, June 26, the evening will begin at the lovely Hyland Hill Chalet with a social hour at 6 pm and include a generous buffet of appetizers, and of course, we WILL have chocolate! Music and talks begin at 7 pm. So, invite some friends and come for a fun and faith-filled evening, $45. Group Seating for Tables of Eight: If you’d like for you and seven friends to be seated at the same table, invite them to register.
