Tabby Cottage offers a perfect blend of Florida history with updated coastal design. Ideally situated directly on the Gulf of Mexico, the 103-year old cottage underwent a recent renovation. The homeowners kept as much of the original building material as possible.Althoughthegroundlevelofthecottageisnowfinished,thestructurewasoriginallybuiltonstiltssothatitcouldwithstandfloodingandhurricanes.Muchoftheinitial construction material was tabby, a historic building material composed mostly of crushedoyster shells.During the renovation, thefireplace in thedining room/kitchen was recovered in the same material, further linking the past with the present.

“Soothing shades of turquoise combine with patinated finishes to unite the interior of this charming, historic cottage with its beachfront setting…creating a sanctuary for family and close friends.” Jett Thompson, Designer

“This careful and patient renovation of Naples' oldest surviving beachfront structure shows that we can create a home that is fresh and vibrant and still preserve the rich history of our community.” Frank Comeriato, Architect

A well-worn book, Style by John Saladino, graces the coffee table in the living room of Treasure Cove Villa. The owners drew inspiration for their home from this master work by the famed American designer. Characterized as Classic Contemporary, the architecture and furnishings of Treasure Cove Villa juxtapose ornate with simple elements and classic design with modern style. Unusual building materials—leather wallsandfloors,moldingsontheceilingsratherthanonthewalls,heavysteelfire-places, bronze outdoor benches, dramatically lit staircases—enhance the spectacu-lar mix of old and new in this extraordinary home.

“My most striking memory of the project was all the professional and client collaboration…I feel the house proves in its design that a dedicated, caring team coupled with fantastic clients produces a stunning result.” Jon Kukk, Architect

“As craftsmen, this residence was a privilege to be a part of due to the high quality expec-tations and varying styles of work we were allowed to perform. …Each space is unique yet works so well as a whole to create a truly eclectic, yet cohesive interior living space.” Matt Riley, CEO

Stepping through wrought iron gates into the bricked courtyard of Maison de Fleurs is reminiscent of walking through the Garden District in New Orleans. Indeed it is a replica of the original owner’s home in that famous city. The lush entryway landscap-ing—with new palm trees replacing those damaged by Hurricane Irma—is accented by a small pool featuring lion head fountains. The rear of the house, complete with boat dock, fronts a small canal that opens onto the Gordon River. Arched windows andreclaimedheartofpinefloorscompletetheoriginaldesignofthehome.

Maison de Fleurs

• Double-framed one foot thick walls throughout hiding custom screened doors

• Dark tones of Venetian plaster grace the ceilings, offsetting ornate crown moldings

• Art panels separating dining room from an expanded kitchen which includes a breakfast nook

• Milk-painted and waxed frame fresco in the living room hiding a ubiquitous tele-vision

• Powder room wallpaper complementing a tiny blue and white porcelain sink original to the house

“…the owners were very grounded in old New Orleans historical design and were very specific about making that a priority with modern conve-niences.” - Brian Fleming, Architect

“The design of a house and its gardens should be an expression of the people who live there.” - Machelle Evans, Interior Designer

This coastal contemporary home, built on a higher elevation, takes advantage of wa-ter views from almost every room. Herringbone patterned Chicago brick greets visi-tors in the entry hall and is repeated on a dining room wall. Rather than the expected sofas in the living room, the owners opted for a circle of eight comfortable chairs, making for easy conversation. The suspended vintage canoe in the living room hails from Bobcaygeon, Ontario, where the owners enjoy the North Woods. An outdoor kitchen, complete with a pizza oven, is just one of the incredible outdoor living spac-eswhichoverlookthesparklinginfinitypool,theboatslipandthewidecanalbeyond.

• Floor-to-ceiling walk-in humidor and temperature-controlled wine grotto tucked away off the living room

• Quartz countertops echoing the clean lines of the contemporary kitchen

“… The most challenging part of the design was to capture the Old Florida influence while having to design at a higher flood elevation. The end result created a beautiful setting with almost every room of the house focusing on a majestic long water view up the North waterway.” Mathew Kragh, Architect

NaplesGardenClub is a nonprofit community-oriented charitable and educa-tional organization which fosters appreciation and understanding of horticulture, design and the environment by providing opportunities for learning and sharing. Its members value teamwork, creativity, friendship, community involvement and education.

In 1953, when the founding 30 members of the Naples Garden Club came togeth-erfortheirfirstmeeting,Napleswasacommunityofonly2,000people.Itsfirsthospital had yet to open and many other familiar institutions were still years away from development. The Garden Club focused its efforts on educating members about horticulture and conservation and raising funds to help beautify the growing community.

Two major events, the House & Garden Tour and the Naples Flower Show, start-ed in tandem in the spring of 1955. Eventually separated, the Flower Show has continued to be a major focus of the Garden Club’s educational programming and the House & Garden Tour has become its major fundraiser.

The Naples Garden Club has come a long way since its inception in 1953. It now has monthly meetings during season, some open to the public, offering educa-tional programs and workshops. Naples Garden Club also sponsors the Idea Garden at the Naples Botanical Garden which opened in 2010. The goal of the garden is to stimulate interest in and enthusiasm for horticulture, environment and design by showcasing many types of ideas to inspire Naples Botanical Garden visitors.

Naples Garden Club is a member of National Garden Clubs, Inc. and the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.

Naples Garden Club membership meetings, often open to the public, are held monthly from November through April each year. They feature prominent experts in design, horticulture or the environment. Here, at the February 2017 meeting, is a design by Laura Eubanks. Laura pioneered the moss and glue method of attaching succulents to just about anything, including teacups, shoes, shellsand jewelry. Shewas thefirst togluesucculents on top of pumpkins to use as a Thanksgiving centerpiece. She even created a succulent toupee for her hair-challenged brother! Laura led a workshop the following day for Garden Club members and the public who made their own succulent wreaths.

The Naples Garden Club’s Idea Garden in the Naples Botanical Garden is adjacent to the newly renovated Scott Florida Garden. Its goal is to stimu-late interest in and enthusiasm for horticulture, environment and design by showcasing many types of ideas to inspire Naples Botanical Garden visi-tors. The newest “idea” is the creation of a 4’ lady gator topiary dressed in a beautiful tapestry of succulents. Irma, ironically named after the storm, is now at home in the south end of the Idea Garden. Plans for creating an Ev-erglades Environment surrounding her have been designed and planted by membersoftheGardenClub.Thefinishandrevealistimedtocoincidewiththe Naples Flower Show in late March. Additionally, the Club is presenting an educational series of public programs from the Ideas à la Cart throughout January, February and March.
