One of the unusual things on Tangier island is the Watermen who ply the Bay for their livelihood, most of whom speak with an unique island accent similar to that spoken when Tangier was settled in 1686. Many of the original inhabitants’ English surnames are still found on the island, the most prominent of which is Crockett. Others include Pruitt, Thomas, Marshall, Charnock, Dise, Shores, and Parks. The Island is only slightly above sea level, and as sea level rises, and is in jeopardy. Most ancestral resting places are above ground, in residents’ yards, many dating back to the 1700's. Tangier Island was a staging area for the British in the War of 1812 in preparation for their failed assault on Baltimore (which was the inspiration for Francis Scott Key's writing of "Star Spangled Banner"). There are numerous shops and restaurants on the island, accessible by walking on the only street on the island. The most famous restaurant is 75 year old Hilda Crockett's Chesapeake House, a Bed/Breakfast Inn, where we will have lunch. Food is served family style to guests seated on long benches enjoying wide range of offerings, including ham, chicken, crab cakes and their extra good corn pudding.
