Hey Central Maine, Are you ready
to celebrate summer in the Kennebec Valley! For nearly four decades the peo-ple of Maine’s Capital region have celebrated the clean-up of the mighty Ken-nebec River with a “Whatever” festival.
We’ll all celebrate with family and friends this year as the tradition continues with more than 120 events and activities – nearly all free – over a two-week period. Events are held throughout the Kennebec Valley from June 15 through July 4.
Kid’s Day in Capitol Park on Satur-day, June 25th is Whatever’s sig-nature day with more than 70 free events, activities, and lots of fun. That’s where kids can meet Smokey Bear, Skowhegan Savings Bank’s Trusty Tree, Spotter the Otter, Earnie the cPort Credit Union Starfish, Lloyd the U.S. Cellular Android and a num-ber of other famous characters. This year we have also enlisted the help of Elsa and Olaf from “Frozen” to cool down the park and bring joy to the children of the Kennebec Valley.
Aside from Kid’s Day in Capitol Park, the Whatever Festival includes the Blistered Fingers Bluegrass Festival, the Greater Gardiner River Festival, Winthrop’s 4th of July events and Augusta’s Capital City Riverfront Fourth.
Take a moment to read through our list of sponsors. Please make a point to thank them for their support of this endeavor. I would like to recognize the support of our major sponsors: Everett J. Prescott, Inc., MaineGen-eral Health, Margaritas, Marketplace at Augusta, and University of Maine at Augusta. Thanks to more than 80 sponsors of the Kennebec Valley Chamber’s unique family fun festival and to the hundreds of volunteers who help share the fun.
Please check out the calendar of events and schedule your own fami-ly’s Whatever fun.
Sincerely,
Ross H. CunninghamPresident & CEO Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce

Greater Gardiner River Festival
In a day-long celebration on Gardin-er’s Historic Water Street and beautiful Waterfront Park, Gardiner Main Street and Johnson Hall present live music and entertainment on two stages, a craft fair, and activities for all ages on, near, and in the Kennebec River.
The event is part of the 10-day Ken-nebec Valley Chamber of Commerce’s annual summer celebration of our river-front communities, affectionately known as the “Whatever” Family Festival. The Greater Gardiner River Festival, brought to you by US Cellular of Gardin-er, takes place on Saturday, June 18th. Activities run from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.
Festival organizers have continued to find ways to celebrate life on the Ken-nebec River – both from land and from the water. Most activities are free to the public thanks to the area’s generous sponsors.
Again this year, there will be several ways to get out on the river – from boat rides provided by Friends of the Cob-bossee Watershed to Kayak and Pad-dleboard demonstrations by Seaspray Kayaking. To expand the breadth of the event, event-goers can travel to and from Gardiner on a water taxi via Hal-lowell ($5 round-trip, space limited on a first-come, first-served basis).
Plan to spend part or all of your day in Gardiner. Historic Water Street in Gardiner will be transformed into a pe-destrian mall with artists, crafters, and specialty food vendors exhibiting their products from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Through-out the day, there will be entertainment and childrens’ activities at Gardiner’s Waterfront Park.
Johnson Hall will help enrich the festivities on the waterfront’s main stage with two marquee events. Friday night, June 19th is the kickoff for a sum-mer-long waterfront concert series with Portland duo Muddy Ruckus. Saturday night, prior to the Gardiner Federal
Credit Union fireworks, Johnson Hall presents “The Early Evening Show”, a spoof on a late night talk show that will feature various acts, including previ-ous year’s winners of the popular local talent show. The Early Evening Show is made possible by Kennebec Savings Bank.
“Late June is the perfect time to spend a day on the beautiful Kennebec River” says Gardiner Main Street’s director, Patrick Wright. “If you’ve heard about some of the recent changes in Down-town Gardiner, but haven’t had the chance to visit yet, this is a great oppor-tunity to see what we have to offer.”

Come down to the 2016 Kid’s Day in Capitol Park to have some fun. Just about everything a child might enjoy will be right here in Capitol Park on Saturday, June 25. The Kids’ Stage is packed from beginning to end with a diverse mix of activities emceed by Mix 107.9.
Hall-Dale High School’s Taiko Drum-mers will get things hopping at 11 a.m., followed by Johnson Hall’s own Mike Miclon performing vaudeville antics with his son.
Bring your lawn chair and spend some time singing along with Wayne from Maine, then jump up and dance yourself into fitness with a ZUMBA demonstra-tion. Crowd favorite, Rob from Party Palooga, will twist and snap all kinds of animals into shape with his balloon tal-ents, and a State Police K-9 will show off his (or her) strengths to finish off the day. The Kids’ Stage is sponsored by Charlie’s Motor Mall.
The Dance Stage is always a great op-portunity to get your toes tapping. Don’t
miss the incredible dancing talent that thrives in the Kennebec Valley. 92 MOOSE personalities will be our emcees while we enjoy performances by Kennebec Dance Centre, Dance Unlimited and Stage Pres-ence for Dancers. The Dance Stage is sponsored by On Target Utility Services.
B98.5, Maine’s Country Station, brings us the BEE A Country Star singing com-petition to the Capital Stage. Come listen to the finalists, root for your favorite local star, and get your country on. The Capital Stage is sponsored by Pine State Trading Company.
Don’t miss this opportunity for the kids to meet their favorite characters. These awesome photo opportunities are sponsored by Summit Natural Gas of Maine. Check out who’s going to be joining the crowd: Smokey Bear, Spotter the Otter, Earnie the cPort Credit Union Starfish, and Skowhegan Savings Bank’s Trusty Tree. Is there a “Frozen” fan in the house? They won’t want to miss this opportunity to hug Elsa & Olaf!
Bring a toy truck collection to life with Touch a Truck, sponsored by O’Connor AutoPark. The Augusta Fire Department will be on hand with their fire truck and ambulance displays: they will also demon-strate the Jaws of Life on a real vehicle. Want to check out a helicopter up close? Come see the Maine Forest Service’s Helicopter and Forest Ranger Truck.
Sounds like a lot going on, but don’t worry – there is more! Cross Insurance has sponsored dozens of kids’ activities at the park! Dan Burns of Burns Bears will be carving his special bears and other fun characters out of tree trunks with a chain-saw. Then hop in a time machine and come check out the Renaissance Faire! The knights in shining armor are back and they put on an amazing show. The Maine Society for Creative Anachronism will display lots of period costumes and perform actions such as jousting, fencing and more. Need to expend some energy? Duel through the Rat Race Obstacle Course.
There will also be face painting, tattoos, a bounce house, coloring, making slime, free sno-cones, a photo booth from Dar-ling’s Augusta, caricatures, plus Home Depot’s hands-on kids’ workshops.
Don’t worry about lunch, there will be many food vendors on site. Come taste the delicious offerings of Margaritas, Kabayan Philippine Foods, The Maine Tater and more — plus — lots of other food vendors to keep stomachs from growling.
How is the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce able to bring this to Capitol Park? The support of major sponsors makes this day of free family fun possible. Many thanks to Everett J. Prescott, Inc., MaineGeneral Health, Margaritas, Mar-ketplace at Augusta, and University of Maine at Augusta for their support of this great event. Some of the greatest Bluegrass music can be heard at one of the largest family musical events in New England. Blistered Fingers is a fast- moving traditional Blue-grass Band from the central Maine area that travels extensively around the northeast and eastern Canada. Blistered Fingers’ obvious love of bluegrass, their fans, and field picking makes Blistered Fingers a special group with their delightful mix of original material, soulful ballads and hard driving traditional bluegrass music with a little good humor thrown in.
The Bluegrass Festival takes place twice every year and brings thousands of music lovers from all over the world to Litchfield, Maine, to hear banjos, fiddles, and high, lonesome harmonies. This event features many worldwide and local bands. This festi-val has something for all ages and has occurred every June and August since 1991.
The famed Blistered Fingers Bluegrass Festival will be held this summer at the Litchfield Fairgrounds, 30 Plains Road in Litchfield. The festival grounds have a big stage that was built in 2010, as well as the convenience of 18 women’s and 18 men’s indoor bathroom facilities, four free hot showers, numerous water locations through-out the grounds, electrical hookups, and an extra-large tent. Several food and craft vendors will be on hand.
The festival location has a ‘Welcome Home’ Country atmosphere and flat, solid grounds great for camping.
The Blistered Fingers and the Bluegrass Music Association of Maine have gotten together to create a free, relaxed, informative, three-day music program for children ages 6-18 at the Blistered Fingers Kids Academy. The focus is how to play and sing bluegrass music. Students will bring their own instruments and must commit to the three-day program. All the youngsters get a free T-shirt and the group will perform a couple of songs on the main stage Saturday.
One of New England’s largest family
bluegrass festivals is happening in
Litchfield from June 15 – 18
Gates will open at 8 a.m. on Sunday, June 12 for early birds. Weekend tickets for each festival will cover four days of great music and camping from Wednesday to Saturday plus the Sunday Morning Gospel Sing Along and Jam.

Old Fort Western, a national historic landmark and living museum, will host an Independence Day Celebration Monday, July 4 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the east bank of the Kennebec River in the heart of downtown Augusta.
Visitors are invited to walk through the 1754 Fort, Store, House and Tenement to view museum exhibits and talk with historical interpreters about daily life in the 18th century. Music will be provided by the Liberty String Band. A hot dog fundraiser will begin at 10:30 a.m. outside the main Fort gates to benefit Old Fort Western’s educational programming. Soda, chips, ice pops, and ice cream will also be available.
At 4 p.m. the Augusta Parade will begin
at the State House and end at the Fort. At 5:30 p.m., Augusta’s Mayor, David Roll-ins, will give the traditional reading of the Declaration of Independence on the Fort parade grounds followed by the lowering of the British colors and the raising of the “new” American flag. Afterwards a thirteen-gun cannon salute will be made honoring the original 13 colonies.
At 9 p.m. don’t miss the traditional fire-works display at Mill Park.
During the day, regular admission rates apply; however, admission for Augusta residents is always free. The Ceremo-ny at 5:30 p.m. is free for all. For more information, please visit our website at oldfortwestern.org or call 626-2385 or e-mail [email protected].

Contributed photoAgain this year for the Greater Gardiner River Festival, there will be several ways to get out on the river – from boat rides provided by Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed to Kayak and Paddleboard demonstrations by Seaspray Kayaking. To expand the breadth of the event, event-goers can travel to and from Gardiner on a water taxi via Hallowell ($5 round-trip, space limited on a first-come, first-served basis).
Contributed photosThe Blistered Fingers and the Bluegrass Music Asso-ciation of Maine have gotten together to create a free, re-laxed, informative, three-day music program for children ages 6-18 at the Blistered Fingers Kids Academy. The focus is how to play and sing bluegrass music. Stu-dents will bring their own in-struments and must commit to the three-day program. All the youngsters get a free T-shirt and the group will perform a couple of songs on the main stage Saturday, June 18, at the bluegrass festival in Litchfield.
