Dear People of Holy Spirit Parish:

“Untie him. Let him go free.” (John 11:44)

Our Lenten journey leads us to the heart of the mystery: It is only when we surrender that we are set free. Jesus said it in so many ways. “Unless the seed falls to the earth and dies it re-mains just as seed.” “If you try to save your life you will lose it. But if you lose your life you will find it.” And now to Mary in front of Lazarus’ tomb; “If you believe in me, even if you die, you shall live.”

We come to the fifth and final threshold of faith: Commitment. When Trust grows, the heart sends out delicate shoots of Curiosity. If those are met with respect and care the locks begin to fall, gates begin to Open. The heart begins to let down all of the defenses it has put in place to survive. And out from be-hind those walls steps the soul, hungry for life, searching for love, Seeking the only one ultimately able to fulfill it: God. The soul who had lain lifeless in a tomb, now at Christ’s call, arises and stumbles out into the light of day. Drawing its life completely from Christ now, completely surrendered, it is un-bound and set free. Such is the state of one committed to Christ.

Let this coming Holy Week be the time you personally commit, or renew your commitment, to Christ. Palm Sunday we will listen to the Passion, the account of Christ’s own suffering and death. On Holy Thursday we we reflect on his explanation of the meaning of his death as we wash one another’s feet. On Good Friday you will be invited to embrace the cross, the specific way God is asking you to die to self. On Holy Saturday we will support Steve Ferrel who gives his life to Christ for the first time in the waters of Baptism. Then we will pray that God fill him and Mariah Tureen with all the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in Confirmation. And finally we will welcome them to our foretaste of resur-rection: Eucharist. Prepare now to die and rise with Christ, to commit your-self to him.

This week we are surveying our Small Discipleship Groups to find out if people wish to continue meeting or to take a break. Over time we will definitely con-tinue to grow these smaller communities within our larger parish until every-one has a safe place to let down the defenses and respond to Christ’s call to “Come out” and live!

This past week has been packed with important decisions. Perhaps you heard that the Wisconsin State Legislature threw us a curve by going through the UWSP budget and vetoing all expenditures for new buildings! That is correct, they forbid UWSP from using state funds to purchase our Newman Center. The Chancellor so wants the Newman Center Building for use as a welcoming and registration center for new students that he is personally raising the funds from private donors to proceed with the purchase. At our March 27th building committee meeting with Ellis Construction we agreed to go ahead with the May 19th ground breaking. At best the Chancellor will raise the funds in the next few months and all will go as planned. At worst it may take longer to sell the Newman Center and so we may have to leave some things incomplete in the addition. Possibilities include using old instead of new appliances in the new kitchen and not finishing the new offices. We are delaying the Farewell to the Newman Center originally planned for May 12th until the time we know for sure when it will be sold.

Let us pray that when finished this new ministry center will set Holy Spirit

parish loose to live even more fully its risen life in Christ.

Children’s Liturgy Leaders All-Call!

We’re looking for some additional Children's Liturgy leaders moving into the Season of Easter and over the summer! This is a great ministry that we are able to offer based solely on the generosity of our volunteer catechists. It’s easy — and there are plenty of resources — but as anything else im-portant — it does take some time and consideration and dis-cernment. Here’s how it works:

This opportunity is open to adults, parents, families, and high school and college-age young people. Families could even do this together. We typically schedule 6 months at a time and generally you would serve once or twice per month. Our cur-rent team is great about subbing and trading when they need to.

You can choose your own availability and we do our best to work with ministry scheduling as well — so you are not do-ing 2 things on the same weekend or scheduled at 2 different Masses. The more we know about your specific needs the better we do with that scheduling.

The week preceding the weekend you serve — you receive a reminder email and resources for the weekend. You arrive about 20 minutes before mass to pick up the Children’s Lit-urgy gospel book and key to undercroft from the sacristy and set up downstairs. The goal for Children’s Liturgy is to give children ages 4’ish through the time of celebrating the sacra-ments of Reconciliation and Eucharist a short-term period of time and opportunity to encounter the Liturgy of the Word and readings/gospel in a child-friendly way.

If you would like to know more — please ask a current minis-ter — or if you’re ready to commit — contact Colleen!

24 Hours for the Lord...168 hours later

SO MANY THANKS for a great weekend host-ed right here at our parish! We welcomed lots of guests from elsewhere as well as celebrated the mercy and love of Jesus in all of our learning and practice of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and celebrating the sacraments of healing in Reconciliation and Anointing! We’re so grateful for the trust, curiosity and open-heartedness to all those who came forward seeking God this weekend! To those who sang, played, prayed, led, and followed — this was a really good expe-rience! Should we do it again? Tell Fr. Steve or your favorite Council or Committee member!

EASTER MORNING Mass - 8 and 10 a.m.

— There is not a 6 p.m. Mass on Easter Sunday

BLESSING OF THE EASTER FOOD - The foods from which we’ve fasted during Lent and which will be part of our Easter feasting may be brought to church for blessing at 12:30 p.m. on Holy Saturday.

THE PASCHAL FAST: The Church asks that we fast and abstain from meat on Good Friday. There’s also a tradition of a “Paschal Fast,” which is about anticipating, not depriving, from Holy Thursday night until after the Easter Vigil. The Paschal Fast entails fasting from food, but also the normal distractions of life — shopping, television, videos, eating out, computers, texting, Facebook, e-mail, phone calls, etc. We fast from those things so as to give our attention to waiting and praying and anticipating what awaits us at Easter.

What is a Mass Intention?

“But for those who believe in your love death is not the end, nor does it destroy the bonds that you forge in our lives.” (Order of Christian Funerals). It is because we are still in relationship with those who have died that our thoughts and prayers continue to affect them. The Eucharist is our most pow-erful prayer. From the earliest times Chris-tians formed the practice of offering a Mass for one particular person who had died to comfort and strengthen them on their jour-ney home to God. The person so chosen is called the Intention for that Mass, or the Mass Intention. You can have a Mass of-fered for a loved one by contacting the par-ish office. (715-344-9117). You may ask for a specific date. There is a custom of offering a gift in thanksgiving for the Mass of $10.
