A Journey of the Heart We remember the day when a very special young Rottie came to Rescue Village. She arrived and we were silent. Looking at our Humane Agent Christian Courtwright’s eyes, we knew that the what and the why?of this dog’s story was going to be hard to hear. It was impossible not to notice how little she weighed. It was heartbreaking to learn about her lifetime in a closet with little food, sunlight, and no love at all. Rescue Have you ever experienced one of those life moments when there are just no words? This was one of them. But then something happened that captured our hearts. The Rottie started to wag her short tail as if she was the happiest dog on earth. After all she had been through, you would think she would be distant and afraid of people. Yet, her basic sweetness shined. Life Starts Looking Up Dr. Volpe, our Medical Director, described her feelings that day, “…by all counts, this dog should have been totally broken inside. But she was sweeter than anything. That’s why I named her Candy. For two months Candy was cared for and surrounded by love. Her body filled out and her wounds started to heal. Candy was slowly introduced to sunlight. An Unbroken Spirit In September, Rescue Village took part in Northeast Ohio’s largest-ever adoptathon. We brought Candy and 41 other animals. Hundreds of people came to find new best friends. When Candy was chosen, cheers filled the air. It was like a redemption song. Candy’s new mom changed her name to Athena, a big bold name for a tail-wagging cutie pie. Yet, when you think about it, maybe it is perfect. Athena is the goddess of war, wisdom and justice. In a way Candy, now Athena, symbolizes a warof compassion against the devastating effects of cruelty. Her second chance is about justice. She had experienced some of the worst of our species and now was bringing out the best in us. Happy Holidays Athena, you are forever in our hearts. Have you ever wondered where that puppy in the window came from? At RescueVillage, we rescue puppies from all different walks of life. Not only do we take in

hundreds of puppies from Geauga and the surrounding counties every year, this yearwe also have partnered with agencies in Kentucky and Tennessee that rescue puppies

from shelters where they would have been euthanized for space.

Because there are no time limits at Rescue Village, puppies get a second chance and arenow new members of happy, loving homes. Rescue Village helps puppies, regardless of

where they were born. It’s all about lifesaving, not where you came from.

from the executive director

Recently a dear friend asked me, “Who isyour mentor?” Without pause, I answered,“Oh, it’s the animals.” Five years ago, whenI came to Rescue Village, I would have knitmy brow and found the name of a person, maybe a colleague or friend. I went on,“Let me tell you about a dog namedCandy…”

By the time I finished sharing Candy’s story(now Athena, see the front page) she wasquiet. In my youth I believed that only humans were sentient beings ~ thatour species was the only one that was self-aware, had perceptions andemotions. That is what I was taught. Still, in my minds eye, my dog Susie,my canary Sammy, my duck Quakifer, “knew” a lot.

After meeting Candy, Wilber the pig, Marino the cat, Zoey thehorse…thousands of animals with thousands of names and stories to gowith them, I have become acutely aware that science has lagged waybehind down-on-the ground experience with animals. It is important, enormously important, and a moral responsibility, to end cruelty and ease

pain. But even that is not enough. As guardians of animals who cannot speak for themselves, we also strive to provide a life where thecats, dogs and other species that fill our shelter and inhabit our world

experience joy, happiness, and freedom from fear.

We share this planet with countless animals who, even if it is inbasic terms, experience and deliberately interact with the world

around them. Candy, despite being treated so horribly, never lost her abilityto find joy and comfort through trust. In this holiday season, may themeaning of Candy’s story light the way for all of us.

A bond so close: Zinnie & Emmet

On a hot day at the end of June,we received a call about anumber of cats desperately

in need of help. They werebeing

housedin an

airless, hotgarage. Temperatures ranged in the90’s. There were no comfy beds,no toys. They slept, ate and survivedon hot dirty concrete. Yet, they hadeach other.

Within a week they were all withinour care. Most were housed singly;in some cases they were paired.Zinnie came in with the first groupof cats. Emmet came in with thesecond wave. Because of this theywere held in different rooms, insingle housing units.

Emmet was one of the first cats tomove up to the adoption area. Heseemed subdued and was slow tocome out of his shell. We assumedit was a result of the trauma thathe had suffered. We spent timepetting and coaxing him. Wesupplied the best treats and toys, and all the love that we could giveyet he still seemed down anddepressed. We could find nothingwrong with him medically andhoped that time and love wouldrenew his spirit.

Volunteer Brenda Donahue recalls the reunion:Zinnie was still held in the isolation area of the shelter. Shehad come down with the sniffles. After a couple of weeksthe day finally came when she was healthy and ready fora new home. It was time to move her to the adoption area.I will never foregt that day. Zinnie was placed in her new

cage, and I made sure that she settled in nicely. Just as Istarted to leave the area, I heard a loud meow. It seemedto be one of excitement, of recognition.

I stopped and turned, and withinseconds heard another cat loudlycalling. I looked from left to rightand pinpointed the “twoconversationalists.” I felt as thoughevery hair stood up on my armswhen I realized what I hadwitnessed.

Emmett, who up until now hadbeen so low in spirit, with no “joiede vivre” had recognized his garagemate Zinnie, and was doingeverything in his power to let herknow it. The return “meows” werefrom Zinnie. She was loudlyanswering his call.

I proceeded to place them togetherin one cage and immediately I sawa spark, a new enthusiasm, a spiritin Emmett that had been lackingsince the day of his arrival. Theybegan head butting and groomingeach other, chirping happily. I wasalmost in tears watching them!

Is it possible for two cats to havesuch a close bond that it stands thetest oftime? In thiscase, there is no

question. Emmett has his girl backand his zest for life has returned! Thisloving pair are at the shelter, awaitingthat special family to come in toadopt them. Together, we hope!

addie came to Geauga Humane Society onAugust 24, at the tender age of 10. In the shelter, this sweetgirl spent much of her time napping on her bed in the sun, orbeing fawned over by staff and volunteers who loved her quietyet stoic demeanor. After 16 days with us, a wonderful womanvisited and fell in love with Maddie. Christine wasn’t the leastapprehensive about adopting an older dog.

“ I adopted Maddie a few weeks ago and it feels like she hasbeen with us forever. She gets along great with my two beaglesand tabby cats. Thank you for posting her picture on Facebook,or I never would have found her.”

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS:

The skies at Holden Arboretum changedby the minute and it was definitelysweatshirt weather for Woofstock 2012!But rain and chilly weather did not stoppeople from bringing their pooches toNortheast Ohio’s biggest dog festival.Folks came out from as far east asYoungstown, as far south as Akron, asfar west as Bay Village.

The Blessing of the Animals, acommunity favorite, preceded the dogwalk. Even when skies darkened,RunAvrilRun kept playing and the dogskept walking. A new part of the daywas Meowstock, a purrfect tribute tothe cats that are cared for and adoptedat the shelter. Meowstock even featuredartwork created by shelter cats!

Woofstock has touched the hearts ofour community. Its message of kindness, compassion and celebration combinedwith fundraising and tons of fun isirresistible.

Top Fundraiser went to Kelli Coleman, who collected over $1,300. The entireRescue Village teams sends a huge thankyou for all of her hard work! Top KidFundraiser was once again Jori Greene,

who worked tirelessly to raise over$2,000, setting an incredible exampleto kids everywhere that they can makea difference.

A very special thank you to everyonewho was a part of Woofstock 2012.Over $75,000 was raised to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs, cats, horse, goats, pigs, rabbits and otheranimals that count on Rescue Village.See you next year!

He was a little scared, a little stained and little bit unsure about what life held next.He was just like us and we felt he was perfect toadopt as our new best friend; the White GermanShepherd we now call Merlin (formerly Ghost). Itis an amazing feeling to watch him go from beingunsure of the carpeting beneath his paws, tobeing comfortable enough to gently lay his headdown for an evening nap on our daughter ’s bed;makes you believe love CAN conquer all. Surethere are days we have setbacks and have to workon the behavior we might usually take for grantedin a dog raised in “normal” surroundings. Inaddition to learning sit, stay, down and shake,Merlin is doing great, growing a bit, gainingweight, playing with neighborhood dogs andpretty much goes everywhere we go. Many peoplemay walk by, and most never know his story, butthey all stop and marvel at how beautiful his whitecoat is and how happy he looks. We are happy, too, since he has changed our family for the better- forever.

While Bela (formerly Dallas, of the white shepherd rescue in early May) hasn’t quitebecome a ’bundle of joy’, she is making great progress! She no longer hides in her crate and will occasionallyenjoy playing with toys and treats.

Fortunately, she seems to enjoy car rides, which hasallowed us to take her on trips to different parks inthe area. Most recently we went to Pennsylvania forsome hiking which she enjoyed tremendously and tookit on like someone who had years of walking to make up for.

Recently, Bela had a fun day, as she was able to meet up with an old ’cellmate’ and closefriend, Skye (Tiara). While there were no fireworks at first, once they had a chance tosniff each other out, the tails started wagging and play was initiated. It was a pretty nicesight to see some excitement in them both.

Bela

Jethro was transferred to us in lateJanuary, 2012. Only one year old, he hadLOTS of energy and lacked basicmanners. He was jumpy, difficult to walkand was generally not focused, so hewas not showing well to potential adopters. It was beginningto seem as if he would be here forever.

Thanks to the hard work of Jethro’s Emergency InterventionTeam (EIT), led by volunteer Carole Nazar, Jethro was adoptedin late August. He had an entire team of heroes. We are gratefulfor the diligence of Jethro’s team: Polly D’Amore, Ann Jacobson,Carole Nazar, Gai Russo, and Gary Steyskal. This training successis just one example of what sets Rescue Village apart from othershelters, and shows just how invested our volunteers are whodonate their time and love.

Jodi Manocchio and her son Nick attended the FebruaryVolunteer Fair and signed up for the Small Animalprogram to socialize our smallest critters. Nick especiallyenjoyed working with the rabbits and spent manyhours during the summer giving them attention sothey would thrive at the shelter and get adopted.

Soon after Nick and Jodi began volunteering, Charles, the oldest son of the family, made an appointmentwith the Rescue Village Volunteer Coordinator todiscuss doing his Eagle Scout Project for the shelter. We were thrilled! He decided to focus on the barnand chose to work on a shelter structure for the barnanimals so they could enjoy some shade while outdoors.Charles worked diligently over the summer raising thethousands of dollars to fund the project. He began

leveling the pasture in late September. We are proudand extremely thankful for the Manocchios. They arejust one example of how an entire family can makesuch a big difference.

GHS Upcoming Events

We are happy, too, since he has changed our family for the better- forever.

addie came to Geauga Humane Society onAugust 24, at the tender age of 10.

Together, we hope!

from the executive director

A Journey of the HeartWe remember the day when a very special young Rottiecame to Rescue Village. She arrived and we were silent.Looking at our Humane Agent Christian Courtwright’seyes, we knew that the “whatand the why?” of this dog’s storywas going to be hard to hear.It was impossible not to noticehow little she weighed. It washeartbreaking to learn about herlifetime in a closet with littlefood, sunlight, and no love atall.

RescueHave you ever experienced oneof those life moments whenthere are just no words? Thiswas one of them. But thensomething happened thatcaptured our hearts. The Rottiestarted to wag her short tail asif she was the happiest dog onearth. After all she had beenthrough, you would think shewould be distant and afraid ofpeople. Yet, her basic sweetnessshined.

Life Starts Looking UpDr. Volpe, our Medical Director, described her feelings thatday, “…by all counts, this dog should have been totallybroken inside. But she was sweeter than anything. That’swhy I named her Candy.”

For two months Candy wascared for and surrounded by love. Her body filled out and her wounds

startedto heal.Candy wasslowly introduced to sunlight.

An Unbroken SpiritIn September, Rescue Villagetook part in Northeast Ohio’slargest-ever adoptathon. Webrought Candy and 41 otheranimals. Hundreds of peoplecame to find new best friends. When Candy was chosen, cheers filled the air. It was likea redemption song.

Candy’s new mom changed hername to Athena, a big boldname for a tail-wagging cutiepie. Yet, when you think aboutit, maybe it is perfect. Athenais the goddess of war, wisdomand justice. In a way Candy, now Athena, symbolizes a “war”of compassion against thedevastating effects of cruelty.

Her second chance is about justice. She had experiencedsome of the worst of our species and now was bringingout the best in us. Happy Holidays Athena, you are foreverin our hearts.
