humbled by the breaks not

going our way, or when we

and the baseball gods even

things up. Just ask Ronny

Stegall, manager of the Houston As (45+

wood Cactus) this week. He has been aregular in Arizona since 2002. When Ronny

and Robert Lopez teamed up with the

Houston Indians in 2003, he was the starting

pitcher against the Denver Red Sox and was

on the verge of a complete game with a 3 run

lead. Robert made a visit to the mound with

two outs in the bottom of the 9 th, intent on

bringing in a relief pitcher who was fresh.

Ronny talked him out of it and proceeded to

give up four runs, the last 3 coming on a

walk-off inside the park home run. The

Indians won 3 of the next 4 and needed to

win its last game and get some help fromother teams to make the playoffs. Against

the Watsonville Angels, it was a close game.

Ronny came in to pitch the last couple of

innings, but the Angels (continued on page 2)

Tournament MVP Steve Moritz was the winning pitcher and drove in the decisive run wit

eighth inning single. The Blues led before the Halos scored twice in the eighth inning.

Ronny Stegall (Continued from page 1)had the lead. His arm was hurting so bad he

could hardly lift it, and when his team made a

furious comeback to tie the score at 16-16,Ronny was scheduled to hit with the bases

loaded. He wanted to report as an injury to the

umpire and let Herb Goodwin bat, but Herb in-

sisted that Ronny give it a shot. After two called

strikes, Ronny hit a shot over the left fielders

head for a walk off game winning hit. They

made the playoffs as two other teams who had to

lose did, and his team hasnt made the playoffs

since. But redemption is sweet, even when we

dont understand how things like that happen.

Ronny will also be playing in the Father/Son

Division with two nephews and a brother-in-law

this year. A former 10 year veteran of the restau-rant business, Ronny now is self-employed as a

municipal contractor dealing in fire hydrants.

Almost all of his family still lives in the Houston

area and are very close. He says he plans on re-

turning to Phoenix every year until whenever,

because baseball is just that way. It gets in your

blood and you never know what the next game

will bring. There is always a chance for

redemption.
