September 29: What in the world is Am-mparo? A new outreach ministry of Christ the King ChurchThe newly forming Ammparo group at Christ the King Church will introduce its scope in

this new (and not so new) area of justice advocacy ministry. Our congregation and synod are participating members of the ELCA’s AMMPARO (Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection, Advocacy, Representation, and Opportunities) network. Ammparo intends to engage as a church body with af-filiates and partners to respond to the migration situation and its causes and to advocate for migrant children and their families.

We are thrilled for this opportunity to deepen the covenant relationship between Christ the King Church and St. Thomas Church.

In Our Own VoiceThursday, October 106:00-7:30 p.m., 2nd floor presented by NAMI

(National Association for Mental Illness)Sponsored by our Community of Hope lay chaplainsCome hear one of NAMI Greater Houston members share a compelling personal story about living with mental ill-ness, focusing on recovery, and the message of hope. In Our Own Voice is a program of the National Association for Mental Illness which shares information about mental illness, mental health recovery, and its impact on partici-pants’ lives…in their own voices. The program provides an opportunity for those who have struggled with mental illness to gain confidence and to share their individual experiences of recovery and transformation.

Anyone familiar with mental illness knows that recovery is not a singular event, but a multi-dimensional, multi-lin-ear journey characterized more by the mindset of the one taking it than by his or her condition at any given moment along the way. Understanding recovery as having several dimensions makes its uneven course easier to accept. Much as we don’t blame the cancer patient for dying of invasive tumors, we can’t condemn a consumer whose symptoms overtake his or her best efforts to manage illness. Recovery is the point in someone’s illness in which the illness is no longer the first and foremost part of his or her life, no longer the essence of all his or her existence. Ultimately, recovery is about attitude and making the effort.

Check your Blood PressureBlood pressure screenings are held on the last Sunday September 29 in the narthex.

What is the CTK Festival? It’s our time to party for a good cause, really, several good causes. CTK Festival is a dinner and fundraiser for charities supported by our church.

Sounds like fun! How are the funds raised? There are several fun ways to party for our causes - make gifts directly to the organizations at the festival dinner, sign up for parties (also known as Sociables), buy one of the exciting items offered in the live auction, or buy tickets for an opportunity to take home an original Piecemakers hand-stitched quilt. What can I do to help? Plan to attend the festival, offer to host a Sociable, buy lots of drawing tickets - more information will be in next month’s banner.

Interested in volunteering? Contact Mary Ann Beseda at [email protected]

Their key initiatives include:• Dar al-Kalima University of Arts and Culture• Outreach for Children and Youth (Diyar)• Outreach to Older Adults (Ajyal)
