Building upon the vision ofAida Leopold enunciated in A Sand County Almanac and other works, the AIda LeopoldFoundation strives to promote the care of natural resources and foster an ethical relationship between people and land.

Demonstrating this ethic 0 the original Leopold Family Fann outside Baraboo, Wisconsin, the Foundation seeks torestore the ecological health and integrity of the prairie, oak savanna, woodland, and riparian communities oneabundant in the area. Working closely with neighbors and other private land owners, Foundation staff, interns, andvolunteers share their stewardship expertise throughout the region to save and restore "every cog and wheel," so that theland retains its capacity for self-renewal.Field trips for students and adults to the forests, wetlands and prairies surrounding the Leopold 'Shack' provide andoutdoor classroom for exploring ecological relationships. The Foundation also sponsors seminars, workshops, andspecial education programs to provide private landowners and public land managers the tools they need to achieve theirown 'Land Ethic.'Founded in 1982 by the children ofAIdo Leopold, the Foundation depends on a strong and growing membership tosupport its ongoing work toward developing a conselvation ethic in the minds and actions ofour society.

In the early 1990's a group of Baraboo Hills landowners met due to concern about unrestricted development tJmtthreatened natural resources and the rural character of the area. In November 1994 the Baraboo Range PrescIVationwas incorporated as a not-for profit land trust. Our mission is to preserve and protect the qualities and culture of theBaraboo Range through promotion ofecologically responsible land use. This is achieved through collaboration WitJlgroups having similar goals, community education and land trust projects. Historically, the association has providededucational opportunities to local property owners, schools and community leaders as well as options to landowners forlong·tenn protection of their property. Currently, the organization holds an easement on 400 acres and owns 25 acres.

Circus World Museum is located at the site of the Ringling Bros. Circus winter headquarters, a National HistoricLandmark in Baraboo, Wisconsin. The Museum's thirty-nine buildings are located on sixty-three acres along theBaraboo River and house over one million artifacts, making Circus World Museum the largest museum of its kind inthe world. CWM is home to a priceless collection of more tllan two-hundred antique horse-drawn Circus wagons. ItsLibrary is an international resource for the history of the American circus. The Museum's research center and library isthe only publicly accessible library of its kind, responding to more than 250,000 inquiries from all around the world.

The society started in 1981 to save the Bowman House from destruction. We are a small group dedicated to preservingthe history of the area. We are working to maintain a free museum open to the public with displays of local history. Wehave published a book an the history of the area, and next year we are going to celebrate the Sesquicentennial ofWisconsin Dells. The historic 1875 studio in which H. H. Bennett established his legacy offers a window to the life and times of thepioneering photographer. Visitors enter the studio now restored to its appearance in 1908, the year ofBennett'sdeath through the workroom where he manufactured the stereo cards he sold by the thousands. From there,surrounded by original furnishings, tools and hand-operated equipment that kept the manufacturing operation goingyear-round, visitors can view the darkroom where Bennett developed his glass--plate negatives and made his finishedprints. A few steps away is the "operating room," illuminated by a skylight that provided a source ofnatural light forBennett's portrait photography. And while he is most well known for his breathtaking landscape photographs, Bennettproduced many fine portraits in this room, including several of the native Ho-Chunk people with whom he establishedboth personal and professional relationships. Beyond the portrait room stands the sales room, which Bennett stockedwith mounted photographs, stereo cards, and a variety ofsouvenirs and Native American crafts for sale to tourists who- thanks in large part to Bennett - began to discover the beauty of the Wisconsin Dells in growing numbers.

Mid~Continenti$ a not for profit, membenihip society founded in 1959 as the Railway Historical Society of Milwaukee.It began with fOUf members, whose goal was to save a steam locomotive from being scrapped. They failed in that elTonbut were successful in acquiring other pieces ofequipment. In 1961 they moved their small collection to Hillsboro, WIwhere they gave train lides aboard the vintage equipment pulled with a borrowed diesel engine.In 1963 the Society purchased 4.2 miles of track from the Chicago & North Western Rallraad with the help of Chicagobusinessman Elliot R. Donnelley. They moved the operation to their new home in North Freedom, WI and offeredtheir first stearn train rides under their new name, the Mid~ContinentRailway Historical Society, Inc.The new location also offered the Society an enhanced opportunity to create an entire ~etting, reminiscent ofa smalltown, short line railway in the early 1900's. Visitors today enjoy a unique step-back~in-timeexperience in what lhe~'

believe to he an actual historic site; a fitting uibute to the countless hours ofvolunteer effort by Society members, nownumbering more than 600 people.The Society's programs can be divided into three categories, operation, restoration and education. We operate afunctioning railroad museum, complete with demonstration rides aboard a vintage train. We restore authentic railroadequipment and structures for display and exhibition. We educate both our members and the general public through ourtraining programs, exhibits, public presentations and publications.The Society currently employs year~around staff, one person to handle the day to day business affairs, and one whoselVes as an archivist. We also employ seasonal staff, primarily during the summer months, to handle trains operationsand facilities maintenance. Members function as unpaid staff, fulfilling such key roles as curator, educator, membershipcoordinator, and publications editor. The Society aJso retains the services ofa management consultant to help in allareas ofmuseum administration.The Society conduct~ visitor sUlveys each season. We know our primary appeal is to families (two·thirds ofwhich havechildren under the age of 10), senior adults, and school groups (most ofwhich are at the grade school level). Beyond thefonnaJ sUlVeying methods used, we also rely on anecdotal information gained by our train crews and staff fromconversations with visitors. From this we have learned that senior.; like us because the train ride brings back wonderfulmemories for them. But the interest of young families is due to the influence ofa children's book character, Thomas theTank Engine. Eighty percent of the families surveyed said their child's interest in trains prompted their decision to visitMid~Continent.

The purpose of the Baraboo Area Children's ChoiT is to crealc a community of young musicians and to inspire theirappreciation of music through the study and penonnance of high quality, diverse choral music. Our aim is to nurturethe singers personal and social development, as well as !.here musical development We began in August, 2004 with ourannual choir camp, which is held at Devil's Lake. We rehearse Sunday evenings, beginning in September and followingthe school year, until Mid-May. We have two petfonnances, one in Dec., and one in May, along with a choir taurofarea schools and nursing homes. We are open to all children in area schools who are in grades 3 through 7.

Concerts on the Square is an annual summer concert series running mid:June through August. CWR formed in 1997 as a grass roots effort to create awareness, beautify and revitalize the Downtown Baraboo RiverCorridor. CWR obtained a WnNR river planning gmnt and created a strategic plan for the revitalization of the rivercorridor. That plan has been adopted by the City of Baraboo and the Village ofWest Baraboo. CWR is active withRedevelopment opportunities and street beautification projects on Broadway (Bridge, River Walk ctc.) And along WaterStreet. We are currently looking for enhancement funds to be used as part of the Water Street/Highway 113reconstruction project. CWR has also compiled a history of the Baraboo dams and other historic photos of the riverarea.

A granite memorial was erected at the main entrance of the Powder Plant for people to reflect and remember the farmfamilies who gave up their homestead for the production of powder during World War II. The monument has thecaption "The Land Remembers the Footprints of the Past". All the farm family names (90+) and the location of theirfarms are shown on the monument. The monument is situated in a park-like setting which includes benches, trees andflowers. Some of the flowers were transplanted from one ofthes<: farms. We have plans to transfer flowers from more ofthe homesteads. The Fred Kirner family, Donald,James and Richard completed the project with a grant from SaukCounty Arts, Humanities & Historic Preservation along with donations from many concerned people. The monumentis located next to one of the buildings The Badger HistOlY Groups hopes to obtain from the government.

The SCAA encourages appreciation and support of the visual arts. It gives artists, craftspeople and enthusiasts a groupthrough which to channel their energies and ideas. The SCAA membership works together for the promotion ofvisualarts.The annual SCAA Summer Art Classic Fine Arts Festival takes place the second Saturday in August. The festival beganin 1964 with a few local artists displaying their work on the Sank County Courthouse Square in Baraboo, Wisconsin.Since then the festival has grown into one of the premiere small fine aIts festivals in Wisconsin, attracting artists fromthroughout the Midwest. A special high school exhibit was created to encourage young artists. The SCAA membershiphas sponsored awards for the students totaling $250.00.Once a year the members of the SCAA welcome the public to a themed exhibit of their work. Usually in March, theshow highlights the diversity ofartists and their media.In 1975 the SCM decided to encourage further education in the visual arts by initiating an annual scholarship to acontinuing art student at the University ofWisconsin Baraboo/Sauk County Campus. Students are selected through thesubmission of their portfolios which are subsequently judged by a committee of art association members.To allow high schools the ability to expose their students to a broader range ofalt experiences; the SCAA has donated$1,000 each year to two of its Sauk County high schools on a rotating basis, for art supplies and equipment.

The Spring Green Arts and Crafts Fair began over 36 years ago by volunteers and continues today through the efforts ofvolunteers. The Arts and Crafts Fair is always held the last full week-end in June. The Arts and Crafts Fair bringsthousands of people to the Spring Green area. The Arts and Crafts Fair Committee has given thousands ofdollars backto the community over the years.

Organization and History: The Wisconsin Arts Showcase at the Jura Silvennan Gallery is an artist owned and rungalle'Y featuring highly creative work in all media, both fine art and crafts, by exceptional Wisconsin artists. It is locatedin a historic restored early 1900's cheese warehouse in the village of Spring Green, originally built by the SchmidBrothers Dairy in Richland Center. Local fanners brought their cheeses to the building for sealing in paraffin, storage,and eventual distribution via the railroad along which the building is built. The back section, now a paper making andprint making studio forJura Silverman, housed ice storage in the form of blocks cut from the Wisconsin River and keptin Sawdust through the summer months. HistOlic aspects of the building have been retained the old exhaust fan, theoriginal creaky wood floors with nail gouges from wooden boxes and round cheddar box imprints, an early elevator,rough hewn oak wainscoting which Oliginally formed raised wooden floors in the basement where cheese was stored,and cork insulation.A total of3000 square feet ofspace is devoted to exhibiting work by highly qualified Wisconsin artists. Selected artistsare featured throughout the year along with a continuing display ofwork by over 75 artists. The gallery opened in 1984after a benefit exhibition for American Players Theatre. The public reception was very positive and artists' interest in apermanent exhibition space was extremely strong, so that the spa-ce was expanded from a personal studio into a gallerydedicated to Wisconsin artists. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday dmingJune through December, and goodweather weekends during the winter months,January through ApriL Fridays are added in May.The Mission of the Wisconsin Artists Showcase is to help develop creativity and professionalism among WisconsinArtists and to provide them with the opportunity to display their work and connect with interested people withinWisconsin and from other states who come to visit Taliesin, Amelican Players Theatre, and the House on the Rock, inthe Spring Green area. There is an educationally objective also to provide the public with an opportunity to seeartistic media in depth and variety and in development. Jura Silverman is one ofthe founders of the Fall art tour inwhich she and other area artists demonstrate their art and craft and The Wisconsin Center 101' Book and Paper Arts inMadison to presen.'e the art of papermaking and teach hand papermaking byJura Silverman and the artistic process byother artists in featured exhibitions and by appointment.
