Leading NZ Real Estate agent Gary Wallace enjoyed one of his biggest racehorse ownership highlights when his homebred Savabeel filly Coldplay careered away for the honours in last Saturday’s Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes (1600m).

Coldplay is raced with Wallace’s long-time friend Garry Chittick and is the first horse they have raced together.

“Coldplay is the first but I did lease a filly off Waikato Stud a while back. I named that filly Flying Floozie and Garry (Chittick) gave me a telling off for doing so. He said ‘I still have to breed from her’. Flying Floozie as it happened, turned out to be the dam of Starcraft,” Wallace explained.

“Racing Coldplay came about because when I was out in the paddock looking at her as an 8 month old (pictured),

Garry told me I should race one out of the mare. I told him I’d race this one, if he took

a half share and she wore his colours”.

Wallace and Chittick came to be friends over 30 years ago when Chittick sold Wal-lace a share in Centaine.

Chittick subsequently purchased Wallace’s first broodmare Mussella and bought Coldplay’s grand-dam Icy Calm on Wallace’s behalf.

In due course, Wallace replied in kind, breeding O’Reilly’s first ever stakes winner, The Big Chill (pictured right).

Out of Icy Calm, The Big Chill won the Listed VRC Red Roses Stakes and achieved Gr.1 aclaim in the MVRC Man-ikato Stakes and Gr.1 SAJC Goodwood Hcp.

The Big Chill is a sister to Forty Two Below - the dam of Coldplay.

Coldplay, who has now won two of her four career starts under the guidance of Cambridge trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman. Her next outing has yet to be set in stone, but the Gr.2 Eight Carat Classic is a strong pos-sibility.

“It’s probably the logical step for her and the timing is pretty good – you have to keep chasing black-type with these fillies,” co-trainer Andrew Forsman said.

Last week’s Pedigree Pointer focussed on the amazing results to date of horses by Savabeel out of an O’Reilly mare. As if to further reinforce the success of this cross, Coldplay came out on the weekend and won the Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes in very impressive fashion.

In picking up this Gr.3 win at just her 4th start, she gave every indication of a filly with a very bright future. She also further increased the success rate of the cross, with it now sitting at an incredible 28.6% SW/Rnrs. As this cross was highlighted last week, please refer to last week’s Pedigree Pointer for a list of the yearlings heading to Karaka that are bred this way.

The last week’s racing has provided good examples of how successful this affinity is between Savabeel and O’Reilly. In this last week, there have been just 7 run-ners bred on either the cross of Savabeel over an O’Reilly mare, or on the re-verse cross of O’Reilly over a Savabeel mare. Even though there were only these

7 that lined up, 4 of them were winners – with these winners being:

• Coldplay – By Savabeel out of Forty Two Below, by O’Reilly – 2 wins from 4 starts to date, with the latest of these being her victory in the Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes

• Chic – By Savabeel out of Misspro O’Reilly, by O’Reilly – 2 wins from 6 starts to date• Tyrannize – By O’Reilly out of Queen Sabeel, by Savabeel – 2 wins from 5 starts to date, with the latest

The stallions are pretty well done for the season and I couldn’t be happier with how they all went. A big thanks to Davo O’Leary, Sam Wylie and the Breeding Shed team, whose huge efforts en-sured this positive season outcome.

As you can see by the ‘At The Farm’ section above, it has been a very busy time parading yearlings at the farm and, I have to say we are very proud of the draft we are showing.

Exciting times ahead with Christmas, some great racing, the first yearling sale of the year and the final few weeks of yearlng prep before Karaka just around the corner.
