H ow did Israel become a world leader in water? The answer is told in a remarkable new book, Let There Be Water: Israel’s Solution for a Water-Starved World, by Seth M. Siegel. In it, Siegel points to the British policy restricting Jewish immigration to Palestine based on the scarcity of water resources as the early motivation for the Yishuv to develop every possible source of water imaginable. It was as if the early pioneers were saying, “You think there’s not enough water here? We’ll show you!” The story of Israel’s water supremacy is a confluence of human ingenuity, political will, cultural proclivity, serendipity, and maybe just a few miracles along the way. Meet Simcha Blass, the great unsung hero of Israel’s water infrastructure. Here’s a man who, after immigrating to Palestine from Poland in the 1930’s, goes on to become one of the major architects of Israel’s national water carrier and major water systems. In addition, by sheer happenstance, he happened to notice one day on a tour of a farm, a row of trees in which one tree was larger than all the others. After investigating further, he discovered that the irrigation pipe next to the row of trees was leaking next to the larger tree. This sparked the idea that irrigation could be made more efficient if water was delivered in a sustained drip to the tree or the plant. Three decades later he patented a drip irrigation system that revolutionized agriculture throughout the world and has saved trillions of gallons of water in the process. In recycling wastewater and sewage, Israel is a world leader. Ditto for developing technology to monitor sporadic leaks in homes and municipal water delivery systems. How about this one: breeding tomato plants, wheat and other crops on the basis of water efficiency, thereby cutting the quantity of water needed for growing by as much as 75%. Then there is desalination. Israel now obtains close to half of its domestic water needs through the five desalination plants it has constructed on the Mediterranean coast during the last two decades, and in the process, has become a leader in the development of desalination plants throughout the world. These are all game-changing developments for Israel. Israel’s water supremacy in the Middle East may actually affect the politics of the region. Already, Israel’s know-how has enhanced its cooperation with Jordan and Egypt. Quietly, there is cooperation on matters of water management with the Palestinian Authority. It will not be difficult to imagine some forms of collaboration between Israel and many of the parched countries who are currently enemies of Israel, but who may, one day we hope, become linked together because of water. Iran, Israel’s greatest enemy, is facing a water crisis of epic proportions in the coming years. Here’s an idea: how about diverting all the billions of dollars that are being used for the development of nuclear weapons and financing terror to improving water resources for the survival of its people? It almost sounds like beating swords into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks. (My apologies, Isaiah.) Note to Iran: Call Israel. They can help. Israel continues to be a modern miracle. Israel’s water story is just one more thing to celebrate at this time of the year. Happy 68th Birthday Israel! At our Annual Gala on April 10, theTemple community came together to recognizethe combined 180 years of the Highland ParkConservative Temple and Congregation AnsheEmeth. The evening was a wonderful event withfabulous music, delicious food, and a specialvideo presentation. Our thanks go to the Galaand Auction Committee, led by MarleneHerman, Linda Schmidt, Brenda Tanzman, LynnSherman, Bonnie Freidenreich and StacyGreenblatt. Thanks also to Amy Shakun and ourad solicitors for the virtual ad journal anddirectory, Len Khodorkovsky for the invitationdesign, and Marsha Goldwasser and her army ofdirectory and jewels callers. We are also gratefulfor the work of our Temple Office staff: LindaTondow, Beth Spurr and Diane Kurucz, and ourcustodial staff: Hector, Silva and Nely.

As we embark on our next 180 years, howis it that we have reached this milestone?Together, we celebrate with and support eachother throughout life-cycle events. We arefriends, we have camaraderie, we provide support, and we care about each other. We are a vibrant, social and spiritual congregation committed tooutreach, community engagement, and Israel. Our Shul has provided a home for Jews of allbackgrounds and ages, dedicated to Torah, meaningful prayer, and life-long Jewish learning. These values and beliefs guide our congregationas we serve your spiritual and social needs andwork to make the world a better place.

One way that I am recognizing this specialrole is through a legacy gift. I recently completeda Declaration of Intent to include HPCT-CAE inmy personal legacy plan. By taking this action, Iam declaring my intent to provide for the future

needs of our community.

I hope that you agree with me that HPCT-CAE has a unique and special role in your life. Byjoining me as a Legacy Donor you will make apromise to our children, grandchildren, andgenerations to come, that our thriving Jewishcommunity will be continued for them toembrace and enrich their lives as Jews. Throughyour Legacy gift, you acknowledge the value, importance and centrality of our synagogue inyour life and choose to join in creating a legacy toensure its future.

Some of you may think that legacy givingis only for the very rich. Nothing can be furtherfrom the truth. Every gift is meaningful and nogift is too small. This is the time to ensure ourcollective Jewish future by building a strong, secure and permanent community endowment.

It is possible that you have already createda legacy plan which includes the Temple. If youhave, please let us know by completing aDeclaration of Intent. This would give us theprivilege to recognize your generosity during yourlifetime.

Demonstrate your love, devotion andconnection to our congregation, our communityand our future by completing a Declaration ofIntent. Forms are available through the Office.

As we all look forward to a great summer,I want to extend my best wishes and thanks toHector Luna, who will be retiring this monthafter over 15 years of service to our synagogue.Over the years he has demonstrated his love andconcern for the entire Temple community.

I wish everyone a safe, enjoyable summer.

SISTERHOOD REPORTMarsha Goldwasser, Sisterhood President

It is hard to believe that my first year asSisterhood President is coming to a close. I owea huge thank you to all my Executive BoardMembers, Board Members at Large, committeemembers, and Sisterhood members for all oftheir help and support over this past year. While it may have been a challenging year formy family, I knew I could count on all of youto keep Sisterhood moving forward.

Our May calendar was full of the varietyof events that make Sisterhood special. First upwas an insightful meeting about the Jewishcommunity in Cuba. As part of their Areivutseries, Raritan Valley Hadassah included us in aspecial presentation by Cory Schneider, a pastpresident of Women’s League for ConservativeJudaism, about WLCJ’s recent mission toCuba. Thank you to Elaine Rand Fromkin, aparticipant in the mission, for bringing thisprogram to us.

Next up was our Annual SisterhoodShabbat Dinner on Friday, May 13th. Thankyou to everyone who came out to plan, shop, cook, set up, serve, and clean up. This annualevent is a highlight of our year as we alwaysenjoy being together in the Temple kitchen forcooking and socializing. A special thank yougoes out to our immediate past presidentextraordinaire, Teri Manes, for chairing theevening and to Susan Winter for takingreservations. If you missed out on the fun besure to check the calendar next year for moreopportunities to join us in the kitchen.

Finally, on Saturday night, May 14 wepartnered with Men’s Club and the Artist inResidence program for Pinot and Painting. Itwas a special night of food, friendship, and funas we all tried our hand at painting under thedirection of world renowned Jewish artistMordechai Rosenstein.

Please join us on Monday June 6 for ourAnnual Installation Dinner and NeshamaAwards Celebration. We will install new boardmembers and honor some special Sisterhoodwomen who have devoted themselves toSisterhood and the shul. Once again, GloriaSchwartz has planned what should be a veryspecial and memorable evening for all of us tocelebrate Sisterhood.

As we all know, Sisterhood is a yearround organization and this summer is nodifferent. Please join us on Tuesday, July 26 at7 p.m. for our Annual Summer BookDiscussion. We will be discussing The Hilltop:A Novel, by Assaf Gavron. The book is afascinating account about what it is like to livein an illegal settlement in the West Bank. Itcovers the challenges of living in reducedcircumstances and explains the political andbureaucratic environment that has given rise tothe settlements in a way that is entertaining andeasy to understand.

Do you have an idea for a Sisterhoodprogram or special project? Do you know of amember in need of some TLC or support? Doyou want to get involved in some small way butdon’t know who to ask or where to begin?Planning for next year has already begun, butwe are always looking for new ideas andwelcome your input and support. Pleasecontact me and I will be happy to create ashidduch with you and help you get involved. We are also always wanting to reach out andsupport our members with a phone call, visit,or homemade soup, but don’t always know whoneeds this type of support. Please be our eyesand ears and let us know when you learn ofsomeone that we can help. You can reach me [email protected] or 732-296-0316.

Your chessed team, in conjunction with Rabbi, will be coordinating a “ meal train.”

When challenging times occur and meals are needed, volunteers are in place to provide and deliver a meal for the recipient. This is separate from the shul shiva meal fund.

The meal train is exclusively for and kept within our shul family. By adding your email, you will be part of the train. You will see what days meals are needed for a particular

Temple member. You can then "sign up" for your day or days of choice.

Recipients are first asked if they would like to receive meals. Names are never just added.

One of the pillars of Judaism are acts of kindness/chessed. Won't you be a part of our meal train?

High Holiday Permanent Seats AvailableHigh Holidays 2016 are quickly approaching and we wanted to advise our congregants about permanent seat availability.

Permanent seat ownership guarantees that you will have the same seats every year for the High Holidays when you purchase High Holiday tickets. The purchase of these permanent seats also establishes a physical presence between our member families and the sanctuary.

In response to this past High Holydays’ inspiring services, we have had some recent requests for permanent seats and we want tomake the congregation aware that these seats can be purchased at any time. The price of each new seat is $1,250 and, depending on the numberof seats purchased, you can be billed over one or two years. As always, you do not need to own permanent seats in order to buy seats for theholidays. If you would like to discuss the purchase of seats, please call the Temple office.

ReminderHigh Holyday seat applications will be arriving in your mailbox soon.

Please take the time NOW to fill it out and return to the Temple Office with your check.
