When you give blood, you’ll be doing one of the most amazing things anybody could dream of—saving a life.

Do you feel you don’t have much to offer? You have the most precious resource of all: the ability to save a life by donating blood! Help share this invaluable gift with someone in need.

Blood donors are special people.

•It has been observed that increase in blood iron level increases the chance of heart disease.

• Regular blood donation helps especially males in loosing iron on regular basis. Reduce the chance of heart diseases

•It helps in reducing the chance of heart attack to one third.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF DONATING BLOOD

•Enhance the production of new Red Blood Cells

•As the blood is withdrawn from the donors body there is decrease in blood cells. To replenish it, immediately new cells are produced by marrow and this way blood gets refreshed. Therefore donating blood helps in stimulating generation of new blood cells

•you are between age group of 18-60 years.

•your weight is 45 kgs or more.

•your haemoglobin is 12.5 gm% minimum.

•your last blood donation was 3 months earlier.

•you are healthy and have not suffered from malaria, typhoid or other transmissible disease in the recent past.

Tips on Blood Donation Have a good meal at least 3 hours before donating blood.

Accept the snacks offered to you after the donation, it is vital that you have them. You are recommended to have a good meal later.

You will not be eligible to donate blood if you have consumed alcohol 48 hours before donation.

Misconceptions about donating blood

"I will feel drained and tired after donating" - You will not feel drained or tired if you continue to drink fluids and have a good meal.

"I cannot resume normal activities" - You can resume all your normal activities, though you're asked to refrain.

"I will have low blood" - If you are okayed to donate by the doctor you will still have surplus blood after the donation.

It will be painful while donating" - No, you will not feel any pain.

"I will feel dizzy and may faint" - You will not faint or feel uncomfortable after donating blood.

"I may get AIDS!" - No! Make sure disposable syringes are used and all measures are taken to keep you germ free.

"My blood is common. I don't think there will be demand for it" - That is why the demand for your type is greater than for rare types.

•The gift of blood is the gift of life. There is no substitute for human blood.•Every year our nation requires about 4 Crore units of blood, out of which only a meager 40 Lakh units of blood are available.

Every three seconds, someone needs blood. Blood fights against infection and helps heal wounds, keeping you healthy.

•Anemic patients need blood transfusions to increase their iron levels.

• Cancer, transplant and trauma patients and patients undergoing open-heart surgery require platelet transfusions to survive.

• People who have been in car accidents and suffered massive blood loss can need transfusions of 50 units or more of red blood cells.
