• Denmark is free of all major ‘exotic’ diseases. Last recorded outbreak of:

– Foot and Mouth (1983)

– Classical Swine Fever (1933)

– Aujeszky’s (1991)

– Swine Vesicular Disease (never recorded)

• Major research undertaken to control major ‘endemic’ diseases, e.g. pneumonia, lawsonia

• Major research undertaken to understand and control ‘new’ diseases, e.g. PRRS, PMWS

• National control of ‘zoonotic’ bacteria, e.g. Salmonella

Veterinary health contract

• Monthly visit by the vet.

• Written health plan 12 times a year

• No ”prophylactic” use of antibiotics allowed

• Antibiotics prescribed for 35 days only
