INTRO

Importance of paper in our daily life

People use paper everyday.People use paper in many different forms from single sheet of paper to toilet paper.People start their morning reading newspaper, pouring milk from the carton and cereal from the cardboard box. People wipe their mouths with napkins and dry their hands with paper towel. People pay with paper money to buy books and get receipt. People get mail and package, carring their foods in paper container with paper bag and change diaper for babies.

Without paper, history couldn’t be recorded, knowledge couldn’t be docu-mented and art couldn’t be carried down.Without paper, there are no history, knowledge and art.

Our life depend on paper.

SAVE PAPER : Why do we have to save paper?

SAVE PAPER = SAVE TREE = SAVE ANMIAL = SAVE HUMAN = SAVE EARTH

In every second of every day 1.5 acres of rainforest are destroyed for ever.In every two seconds, the size of soccer field in virgin forest dissapears. As a result, animals are endangered by loosing their habitat. We are also endangered by dessertification and global warming.

Average worldwide annual paper consumption is 106 pounds per person and the average American uses more than 748 pounds of paper per year.

One tree produces about 10,000 sheets of letter size paper, that makes about four boxes of paper. If everyone in the US do not use a single sheet of paper for a day, it saves about 21,200 trees per day.If every American sent one less holiday card, we would save over 50,000 cubic yards of paper.

We have to SAVE PAPER.

*Save Paper=Save EnergyPaper manufacturing is the largest industrial user of water per pound of finished product.Approx. 324 L. of water is used to produce 1 KG of paper. Paper manufacturing is the 3rd largest user of fossil fuels worldwide.

RECYCLE PAPER : 1. Why do we have to recycle paper?

Waste paper takes up 48.6% of the domestic waste.

These waste papers have two options. First is to be recycled and the second is to be buried or incinerated. Once they buried, it takes more than hundred years to be completely degraded. Not only that, as the paper decompose, they produce methane gas, which has 21 times strong impact to global warming than carbon dioxide.

However, when they recycled,

Every ton of recycled paper saves about 17 trees and 3 cubic yards of landfill space.Recycling only 54 KG of newspaper will save one tree.

Recycled paper requires 64% less energy than making paper from virgin wood pulp.

We have to RECYCLE PAPER.

However, we have to save paper first even before we recycle*Recycling is the second option.

Page 6: SAVE PAPER!

The US uses 25% of the world’s paper products, The U.S. exports more waste paper than any other country.

30-40% of trash is discarded packaging.

Packaging today considers environment, designers constantly develop eco-friendly materials and try to use less packaging. However, people who use the products are not environmentally friendly. Even if they were concious about the sustainability of the products at the purchasing stage, they do not know how to treat the rest of the packaging. People just throw away the packaging to the trash can same as other waste and they are all going to landfills.

In this way, about 40 million tons of paper that could be recycled is thrown away each year in the U.S.

2. What to recycle : Cardboard box packaging

Page 7: SAVE PAPER!

3. How do we recycle Cardboard box?

A. DESIGNING PACKAGING THAT ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO RECYCLE - WHICH AROUSES THE ATTENTION ON THE PROTECTION OF ENVIRONMENT

B. DESIGNING PACKAGING THAT TRANSFER INTO OBJECT WITH NEW FUNCTION - WHICH SUGGESTS ANOTHER WAY TO RECYCLE THE PACKAGING

C. DESIGNING PACKAGING THAT BECOME PRODUCT ITSELF - WHICH LEAVES NO WASTE BEHIND

PROJECT DESCRIPTION : Repackaging Tissue Box

1. Why tissue + box?

Again, our life depend on paper, imagine a day without toilet paper, napkin and tissue. We have to go back to the primitive age to overcome this serious crisis. Tissue is the indispensable object in our daily life.Everyone from the rich to the poor regardless of their age and gender uses tissue.Tissue is cheap and everywhere and this is why people think they are so easy to get.

However, the age of ‘free tissue everywhere’ will not last long.Don’t you afraid?

So, before the time comes, we have to save tissue.

GOAL : Not only repackaging Tissue Box but also delivering

the message of SAVE TISSUE = SAVE PAPER

Page 9: SAVE PAPER!

2. How do we solve the problem?

First, used tissues cannot be recycled the only way to save tissue is using less, using right amount and using alternative.

STEP1. REDUCE THE SIZE AND THE THICKNESS OF TISSUE PER USE.

STEP2. MATERIAL : THE TISSUE SHOULD BE MADE OUT OF RECYCLED

PAPER CAME FROM THE END OF THE CYCLE. THEY SHOULD BE

100% BIO-DEGRADABLE.

STEP3. REDUCE THE PACKAGING.

STEP4. DELIVER THE IDEA OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

THROUGH VISUAL LANGUAGE

To encourage people to buy and use this product- Branding - Visual Appeal : Graphic + Humor

History of Tissue

Tissues are disposable alternatives for cloth handkerchiefs released in 1929.The hygienic single use of tissue avoided re-infection through used handkerchiefs.

Statistically, every person in Germany uses an average of 55 packs of tissue hand-kerchiefs per year - which is more than one pack per week.

Page 10: SAVE PAPER!

DEVELOPING THE IDEA : 1. Transforming the cardboard box

SOLUTION B. designing packaging that transfer into object with new function - which suggests another way to recycle the packaging

STUDY OF STRUCTURE : TRANSFORMATION OF TISSUE BOX

Page 11: SAVE PAPER!

PRECEDENTS

Page 12: SAVE PAPER!

PACKAGING TISSUE WITH TISSUEHardshell cardboard box is unnecessary because the tissue itself absorbs the impact from outside. The only use of cardboard box is to hold the structure and to support the so-called ‘Z-folding system’, which helps on the ease dispense of the tissue.

Traditional cardboard box packaging can be replaced into new eco-friendly materials.

The idea is packaging tissue with tissue, or other materials, in order to use the very last packaging as same purpose as tissue => Hygiene

SOLUTION C. designing packaging that become product itself - which leaves no waste behind

2. Replacing the cardboard box

Craft paper, Tracing paper, Nano-fiber paper Reusable paper towelScotch Brite Greener Clean Biodegradable Absorbent Sponge (Cloth)

Absorbent sponge is reusable and long lasting. A great alternative to using paper towels, one sponge outlasts more than 30 rolls of paper towels. Sponge is biodegradable.

PRINTING METHOD

Eco Posters became waste at the end.

When packaging disassembled,it becomes eco-poster.

Using tissue packaging as medium, product itself become advertisement.

+ use characteristics of paper : ex) folding paper for joint using no glue. STRUCTURE

ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGN

Using tissue as stuffing for the animal, animal can be the refill container Tissue packaging become a toy

Animals lost their habitat because of human greed but they are still giving us tissue that was once their home. The tissue is comming out from the deep inside of their body and as we use the tissue, the tissue stuffed animal dies. There is nothing left to support them anymore.

3. Delivering the message

Visual language using the mechanism of tissue box

- the volume of tissue decreases as use, forests decrease along- melting glaciers & sea level rise, the death of polar bear

- the last tissue on earth = the last tree on earth

- inform people how they will be damaged.
