RELL HAMILTON PARTICIPATES IN KESSLER STUDY When Rell Hamilton was admitted to Cheshire Home he began to work determinedly toward his independence, through higher academics, employment, and physical therapy. He continues to challenge himself, most recently at the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, where he participated in a Kessler Foundation clinical study, under the direction of Dr. Gail Forrest, Associate Director of Human Performance and Engineering Research. The 12-week study tested the Ekso GT Exoskeleton Robotic Device, made by Ekso Bionics, one of three types of wearable robots being tested in spinal cord injury and stroke. “The first day was so hard,” he said. “I questioned if I wanted to put myself through this, but I kept going.” As the study progressed so did Rell, under the guidance of his therapist Sandra (Buffy) Wojciehowski PT, DPT. He achieved the ability to walk indoors and out, and consistently increased his distance and speed. How did Rell feel at the study’s conclusion? “I loved it. This study actually allowed me to walk. For someone in my situation, that’s really big.” Rell, who will resume his work toward a degree in Business Administration at CCM in the fall, extends his appreciation to the Kessler Foundation and the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, for the opportunity to participate in the study. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE – PERRY NAZON Cheshire Home is pleased to feature resident Perry Nazon who, through his art, is adding a touch of beauty and grace to our home. Prior to residing at Cheshire Home, Perry studied art at Union County College in Cranford. He now works in acrylic paints, and his interests have expanded to the many colors of our natural landscapes. He particularly likes to mix and layer colors, and two of his paintings, “Blue Moonlight”, and “Blended Cherry Blossoms” hang at the entrance of our Physical Therapy Center, where he does much of his painting. As an extension of his artwork, Perry has created notecards depicting his images. He’s pictured here displaying his uniquely created cards, which are available for sale at the price of $2, by Perry personally, and at the Cheshire Boutique. Also, Perry recently entered the Healthcare Association of New Jersey’s Annual Works of Heart Art Contest!

RELL HAMILTON PARTICIPATES IN KESSLER STUDYWhen Rell Hamilton was admitted to Cheshire Home he began to work determinedly toward his independence, through higher academics, employment, and physical therapy.

“I questioned if I wanted to put myself through this, but I kept going.”

Bill Kurnath Attends Daughter’s Graduation Resident Bill Kurnath and his wife Chris recently attended the graduation of their daughter Ali from High Point University in North Carolina.

Due to his injury, Bill had not returned to High Point since the day he and Chris brought Ali for the start of her freshman year. He had kept in touch with Dean Nido Qubein, and when he and Chris arrived for the ceremony, he learned that the Dean had reserved a spot for him right up front, with perfect view.

Having interned successfully with Key Risk Insurance, specializing in Disability Insurance, Ali was offered a job on her graduation day! Congrats to Ali, Bill, and Chris!

STUDENT NURSES TRAIN AT CHESHIRE HOMEAs part of their LPN program, twenty-one student nurses from the Morris School of Technology in Denville trained at Cheshire Home. Supervised by Morris Tech’s Clinical Instructor Cassie Christie, RN, with oversight by Cheshire Home Director of Nursing Madelyn Cer-rato, RN, the students gained hands-on experience, and shadowed our nurses as they worked their daily rounds, learning to develop nursing care plans, to chart, and to properly administer med carts.

Ms. Cerrato shared, “Cheshire Home offers unique opportunities that can’t be experienced else-where. My staff loved hosting the student nurses, and it was a growing experience for everyone.”

Amparo Colon Attends Son’s Military GraduationResident Amparo Colon attended her son Damian’s graduation from Marine Boot Camp on Paris Island in South Carolina. While at Boot Camp, Damian was promoted to Squad leader of the 60 men in his platoon. He is now stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and his expectation is that he will be deployed to a ship in the Mediterranean.Amparo was concerned at first when Damian announced he was joining the military. “But not now,” she said. “When I see him, see how he speaks, how he now carries himself, I know he did the right thing, and I’m very proud of him. “

Thirty-five years is quite a milestone for Cheshire Home, and yet as we celebrate on October 22nd at the Beacon Hill Club in Summit, we will have already begun strate-gizing for the future. As each year brings with it advanced technologies, enhanced therapies, and newly-perfected equipment, we will be better positioned to advance our level of care, and to empower each resident to reach their highest level of independence.

While at Cheshire, receiving the very best of nursing care, personal care assistance and physical therapy, residents through the years have worked to reach beyond their paralysis, and forge a lifestyle that speaks to their personal, educational, employment and social interests. Throughout our tenure we have witnessed many of our residents’ extraordinary achievements, and we are confident that the future holds even greater opportunities for their success.

Our Cheshire Casino Night will mark not only our anniversary, but what is yet to come, and we are pleased to invite you to join us on this occasion. The evening will give us a wonderful opportunity to, yes, have fun and if one is lucky, to win prizes! It will also provide the venue for us to come together as the Cheshire Community of residents, staff, volunteers, friends and family to commemorate the courage and deter-mination of the residents we have been privileged to serve.

Residents Plant Raised Garden as a Summer Horticultural Project

On June 16th, Pat Czarnecki, the owner of GreEn’ergy, LLC, offered a Horticultural Session to our residents. The project was a Raised Garden Box Planting, and the finished product is displayed adjacent to our front entry, for all to see. The weather proved to be lovely for the program, which was held outside of the Cheshire Solarium. Throughout the session Pat, who is a registered horticultural therapist, provided information on plant life and gardening tips, and demonstrated technique to our residents. Residents then put these tips to work, and we now have a Raised Garden of plants, flowers and herbs. As reported by the American Horticultural Therapy Association, this therapy can “help strengthen muscles, and improve coordination, balance, and endurance.” We appreciated the opportunity to participate in this great activity, and look forward to the next session, which will focus on indoor planting.
