I applied for college right around the time that a significant family event had disrupted my life. I didn’t even
know where I wanted to go, let alone how I was going to pay for it. I
intended to take it out all in loans, but now I do not have to, and for
that I thank you sincerely. Thanks to you, I've been better able to focus on enjoying the opportunities here. I am
astounded time and time again by the generosity I’ve seen here.
Brooke Andrea Lillie, ’20Pacific Section TAPPI &

…by your generous contribution, I have been granted the financial opportunity to be the first in my family to attend university. It is my personal passion to investigate and explore how we can repurpose things that were seemingly waste and transform them into products of value. It is due to your consistent support over these last few quarters that I have been able to live out this fantastic opportunity. By your aide I have been made able to grasp at these things that were beyond reach, to move my family forward in a new direction, to lose myself in fantastic research, and to become involved in this amazing community.

This coming summer and fall quarters I will be doing a co-op at PCA in a paper
mill located in Wallula, WA. I am very excited to apply the knowledge I have
gained here at the UW to a real-life job. Having this scholarship really takes a
burden off my mind about financial support and I can direct my focus to other
things that matter more like my studies.
Essance Ray, ’19Noah H. Anderson Scholar
So far, the UW has been everything I hoped it would be. Ever since I was
six years old, I dreamed of attending the UW and thanks to this
scholarship I am able to. I am from a small town in Eastern WA where
most kids don’t attend college. I can proudly say that not only am I going
to college, but I am going to the college of my dreams…I am really
enjoying the BSE program.
Daniel Daily, ’20J.O. Julson Scholar
The BSE program is very intimate and warm, and I am very thankful that I can name almost everyone in my BSE class, which is quote
contrary to my other large classes…Since I am only a freshman, I can only imagine the limitless possibilities and opportunities that are in
store for me. To me, this scholarship means the world as it allows me to attend school without being a burden to my family. Not only does
the scholarship aid financially, it provides me with an even larger incentive to work hard so that I, too, can one day give back.
Li Ding, ’20BPA & Kyosti V. Sarkenen Premium Scholar
While at G-P I am gaining valuable experience and am preparing for
a career in the paper industry. I’ve found that the BSE program has
equipped me well to work in this industry. My wife and I are
currently saving for the last two quarters I have left at the UW,
and are looking forward to starting our careers.

I am looking forward to my fifth and final year at UW, and your scholarship
was a large part in making that possible. Without scholarships, I likely would have had to take off the entire year after completing my internship,
but instead I have been able to explore some of my interests in sustainability
and the natural sciences. Your generosity and support of WPPF is
much appreciated.
Sydney Fry, ’17Donald F. Root Scholar
In 2010 I moved to the US from Turkmenistan with my mother and brother. Throughout these past years, while studying at the community college and then transitioning to the UW, I faced financial hardships that forced me to work full-time, in addition to taking 12-15 credits at school.
Now however, I can focus more on school, research and sport activities…the BSE program is a great opportunity for me as I grew up in a country where crude oil production was polluting our environment and
my goal is to bring some changes in regards to the carbon emission problem.
Azamat Berdiyev, ’18Ernst Haindl Scholar (PTPC)
I cannot express my gratitude enough for the opportunity and support you have given me. You
believed in my success and that has helped me to believe in myself.
Thank you for your generosity and your confidence.

The BSE program has afforded me an excellent opportunity to learn about the
pulp and paper industry. Due to the WPPF’s close connections to the industry,
finding a job has not been a problem… thank you for supporting my education
and ambitions in such a meaningful way. By alleviating a portion of my financial
stress, you have allowed me to apply myself as a student, an engineer, and as a
productive member of our society.

Throughout the year, I’ve had some opportunities to apply my coursework in the lab. During winter quarter, I took a position in the Pilot Lab as a lab assistant under Kurt Haunreiter. As a lab assistant, I tested paper refuse samples to see how much fiber they were losing off their paper machines. This position helped me cement what I was learning in class and gave me the chance to do what I was learning in class. It makes me very excited for my internship position this summer at the Elma Vertellus plant.
Nate Mueller, ’20Kimberly-Clark Corp Scholar
My junior year has been spent primarily on schoolwork and research, all of
which would not have been possible without your generosity. As I wrap up the school year, I am eagerly awaiting returning to Georgia-Pacific Chemical
for my second internship. With the help of your donation, I have not only been able to attend the UW,
but I have been able to do so debt free!
Demi Lidorikiotis, ’18Lennart A. Lundberg Scholar
Having the opportunity to study BSE with your help has been an immense blessing in my life…As the first person in my family to
attend college in the US, the difference in education between other students and me
still contributes to a lack of confidence when attempting to learn the subjects that
I am passionate about. However, knowing that someone believes in my goals and in
my abilities enough to aid with tuition pushes me to always put my best efforts
into my learning and reaffirms that I belong in this field.
Daniel Colina, ’19Asea Brown Boveri Scholar
Teachers and parents told me to follow my dream, but no one really dwells on how much dreams cost. That is why I wanted to sincerely
thank you for your donation and making my passion for studying BSE a reality…Thank you for helping me achieve my goals, and I am excited to
see what we can accomplish together.
Daaniya Iyaz, ’19Thomas S. Friberg Scholar
With my younger brother also attending the UW, the financial stress you were able to take off my family is
immensely appreciated.Interning at NORPAC helped me
improve my problem solving, leadership, time management, and
many other useful skills…the experience and skills gained helped me
find an internship for this summer [at International Paper]. I am excited to test the material that I learned from
school and gain more experience from this internship to better equip myself
for opportunities after I graduate.
Hiro Kusakabe, ’17John Shethar Scholar
The BSE program has really helped me realize my full potential. This summer and fall, I will be interning at PCA in Wallula. I am extremely excited to finally put my engineering education to use.
Being an out-of-state student, this scholarship means a lot to me. Tuition rates at UW are increasing almost every year which makes it hard for out-of-state students to keep up with the financial strain. However, because of you, this scholarship is helping to relieve part of that burden. Again, thank you very much.

As a senior in the program, I plan to graduate this June. I am eager to join the emerging bioresource industry. However, my long-term dream is to one day further my education in graduate school...Currently, I am doing research at the Biofuels and Bioproducts Lab at the UW. The lab analyzes the bioconversion of poplar trees to ethanol. The experience has taught me a lot about bioconversions and has improved my analytical lab techniques as well as my group communication skills.
Hisham El-Husseini, ’17Anson B. Moody & George E. Schwartz Scholar
Your financial support allows me to invest in myself while I am young and still in school so I can make a greater
contribution later in life to future students and the industry.
Right now, I am enjoying a co-op experience at Georgia-Pacific in Toledo,
OR. I am working with Process Engineers and the Quality Manager and sometimes
it feels like I am doing an advanced version of my BSE class. This has made me really appreciate the education the
BSE program has given me.
Lucas Moyer, ’18David W. Harris Scholar
The endowment established by Pacific Section of TAPPI provides
support that allows me to soak up all the information I can from our fantastic BSE staff. And from
that, I’ve been able to land internships that allow me to continue learning in a more
hands-on environment. Thank you for all the ways you help
students like me to become well-equipped, job-ready and
passionate engineers.
Zoie Tisler, ’18Kyosti V. Sarkenen Scholar
Because I have a personal interest in sustainable and renewable energy, I am
currently doing fast hydropyrolysis of lignin to convert to bio-oil. Also, I received an offer
for a co-op position at Domtar as a process engineer for 15 months. I will be working in
their Kentucky paper mill with the Recovery department.
Receiving this scholarship motivates me to maintain my GPA and complete my degree. Coming from a low income family and as first generation in my family to attend college, this scholarship
means so much for me as well as my family. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community.

…[BSE] has a network of connections with many opportunities for me to pursue during both my academic and future career. This scholarship and my current internship at NORPAC Paper are two of the biggest opportunities I had so far…The scholarship is like a sign of confidence that I have great potential in the BSE program. As such, I will continue to reach the pinnacle of that potential during my time at the university and beyond.

I have been helping Kurt Haunreiter and other professors with a team of four students to develop compostable planter pots made from spent beer grain and wheat straw. I also worked as a Lab Assistant with Dr. McKean for 7 months analyzing various catalysts and determining their conversion and yields from simple sugars to ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.
I have enjoyed having the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with testing catalysts…now I am doing a 5-month co-op with Domtar to work in their Marlboro paper mill.
Simon van Tulder, ’18PIMA Scholar
Because of this scholarship, I have recently been certified a Six Sigma Green Belt. This certificate should be great in helping me find jobs and pushing me towards higher ranking management
positions. Soon I will also be getting LEED certified, and I plan on getting my FE in chemical engineering. This is all possible because
of the support this scholarship has given me.

I have the pleasure of working with my peers in the BSE program to produce a compostable planter derived from beer grain residue and recycled pulp; our goal is to phase out the usage f plastic pots on campus and replace them with our compostable pots. I am excited to see how this project progresses and hope we are successful in our mission.
Maika Bui, ’18Boyd K. Wickwire Scholar
I have taken all of the BSE required classes and have enjoyed every
moment at the University. What makes the BSE program an enjoyable learning
experience is how hands-on all of the classes are. Whether it is the process
control classes or the paper design class, all aspects have helped me learn
about the industry.
Joseph Galen Kornowske, ’17WPPF Scholar
This scholarship played a significant role in helping me complete my studies in BSE. I thank you not only for the aid in supporting my tuition, but for the support and confidence in my academic abilities that this award represents.
