SAXON MOUNT SCHOOL

NEWSLETTER

A message from Amanda Jagot, Head of School:

Thank you for taking your time to read this newsletter. The pupils at Saxon Mount

have been working really hard over the last term and this newsletter provides an

exciting overview of some of the activities and events pupils have taken part in.

Healthy snacks:

As a school, we try to encourage our pupils to make healthy choices when it comes

to eating and therefore do not allow children to bring sweets into school. Children

are welcome to bring in a small snack such as a cereal bar, a piece of fruit or a

small packet of crisps for break time. We would be grateful if you could support us

with this by not allowing your child to bring chocolate, sweets or fizzy drinks into

school. If pupils come into school with unsuitable items, they will be confiscated and

returned to either escorts or parents at the end of the day by school staff.

Key dates:

I have included in this newsletter the dates of our external examinations for our year

11 pupils and would like to remind them that they can access additional revision

classes throughout the Easter holiday. Term 4 ends on Thursday 29th March and I

would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our pupils and their families a very

happy Easter. I will look forward to seeing you all again in term 5.

Best wishes

Amanda

Congratulations to the following pupils who achieved this award in February and March:

School Council Meeting Update March 2018

This week, the Saxon Mount School Council went to visit our federated primary special school Torfield. We were

there to share a presentation of everything about our school for year 6 pupils, so that when they come over for taster

sessions and their transition day, they will know what to expect. We did a virtual tour around the school showing them

all of the classrooms and areas so that they could get an idea of all the exciting things they will do here. We even

showed them the specialist rooms, like the science lab, DT, Art and Food Technology rooms, as well as our ICT room

with integral computers.

We showed them pictures of the hall and talked about assemblies and the prizes that could be earned throughout the

year explaining the differences between merits, silver stars and golden tickets. Sam decided he would also explain

how our behaviour system worked and talked about the green ‘think, yellow ‘warning’ and red cards. The pupils from

Torfield had prepared some really good questions of their own, asking about what to do if you get lost, can you bring

snacks into school and where can you have lunch if you find large groups difficult. The session was really successful

with all school council members giving some excellent, well thought out answers. Our visit should enable the Torfield

pupils to feel more confident and comfortable about coming to see us after Easter.

SEND Football Tournament

Eleven of our key stage 3 pupils recently took part in a local

school’s football tournament at The St Leonards Academy.

They played three very competitive games against New

Horizons, St. Mary’s and The St. Leonard’s Academy and came

a very respectable second place. They represented Saxon

Mount wonderfully with their behaviour, attitude and

independence. Well done boys!

Mathematics

Year 10 have been doing some work on statistics using smarties. They had to investigate

whether the smarties in a tube were fair. They first did this for their own tube and then

compared the results for all of the class.

Pupils had to present their results and comment on these.

AS3 were asked to build a house using blocks. Pupils had to make sure the house

was big enough to fit the following rooms: a bedroom, a bathroom and a living

room. Pupils also had to make sure the furniture could fit in each room.

Eddie was in charge of the

perimeter of the house.

Luke was in charge of the table

and chairs for the living room.

Luke was in charge of the bed and

bedside tables.

Martin and Oliver were in charge

of the bathtub and toilet!

Science We have introduced the Crest

Awards – a nationally recognised

scheme from the British Science

Association. Our students will discover real-life

science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM)

challenges through practical investigation and

discussion. After eight Superstar challenges have been

completed, students will receive a certificate and

badge to recognise their achievements.

Year 8 had a fantastic time making an

awesome Jelly Baby Wave Machine

as a visual model of sound waves

travelling through the air.

Colour changing cabbage juice!

Year 9 were amazed by the beautiful

rainbow colours they made using cabbage

juice mixed with different substances to

explore the science of indicator solutions.
